  83. Internet users can now access hundreds of sources of current
  84. government information from around the world -- Census data,
  85. Supreme Court decisions, world health statistics, company
  86. financial reports, weather forecasts, United Nations information,
  87. daily White House press briefings and much more. The Internet has
  88. become a rich resource for government information, in part
  89. because works produced by many government agencies are not
  90. eligible for copyright protection.
  91.  
  92. So, while government agencies have been criticized for not making
  93. more information available online, enterprising individuals and
  94. organizations have themselves made a wealth of sources available
  95. via the network. A growing number of government agencies too are
  96. beginning to establish systems that can be accessed remotely. You
  97. can now e-mail the President, and enactment by Congress last year
  98. of the Government Printing Office Electronic Information Access
  99. Improvement Act assures the U.S. government's role in
  100. distributing information electronically will increase. A variety
  101. of other proposals suggest that in the future, more and more
  102. information produced by state, local and international
  103. governmental organizations will also be available online,
  104. sometimes exclusively.
  105.  
  106. In many cases, there are significant advantages to the sources
  107. accessible online over what can be found in the library or via
  108. other means. Internet resources are often more up-to-date than
  109. their paper counterparts. Frequently they can be searched by
  110. keyword. Sometimes they provide information simply not available
  111. in more traditional formats. A word of warning is necessary,
  112. though. Internet resources are constantly changing. What is
  113. available one minute may not be available the next. System
  114. addresses, source directories and file names are often changed
  115. without notice. Sometimes a remote system may be temporarily
  116. unavailable.
  117.  
  118. This is the second edition of a guide to Internet sources of
  119. government information originally created for the students,
  120. faculty and staff of Temple University. The second edition
  121. includes more than 325 sources, two-thirds of which were not
  122. listed in the first edition. The sources listed are intended to
  123. provide the simplest and clearest route known to the information
  124. described. The preferred source is often a Gopher source because
  125. of the ease of using the Gopher software. Often, however, there
  126. are several sources for the same information. Some may allow more
  127. sophisticated file manipulation. Frequently files can be
  128. downloaded to your personal computer using a feature known as
  129. file transfer protocol (FTP).
  130.  
  131. When the source listed is a Gopher source, the instructions
  132. assume users can escape the local Gopher menu structure to
  133. connect directly to a remote Gopher. This can normally be done by
  134. issuing the Gopher command in combination with a remote system
  135. address from your system's ready prompt. Contact your local
  136. systems administrator if this doesn't work. Many files accessible
  137. via Gopher are also available using a Telnet command, but don't
  138. assume a Gopher source can be accessed via Telnet. Telnet sources
  139. usually require an account or password and are sometimes not
  140. intended for outside use.
  141.  
  142. The second edition of this guide includes a few changes from the
  143. first. Because the new edition features many more sources than
  144. the first, sources in this edition are arranged by subject rather
  145. than alphabetically. Each source is listed in only one subject
  146. category. Sources that include information about a wide variety
  147. of subjects are usually included in one of three general
  148. categories that begin the list. Additional access points have
  149. also been added for many sources. Often in the first edition only
  150. a single access point was provided, typically a Gopher source. I
  151. now realize some Internet users do not have direct Gopher access,
  152. so I have supplied Telnet addresses when known. Instructions for
  153. retrieving files via FTP are generally not provided unless the
  154. information is otherwise unavailable. System addresses, source
  155. directories and file names for all sources have been verified at
  156. least twice. I have added in parenthesis the date I last accessed
  157. the source using the information provided.
  158.  
  159. The "path" listed is the "address" of the remote computer system
  160. where the information described can be found, along with the
  161. steps a user must take to locate the particular directory or file
  162. that contains the information. Slashes in the path separate
  163. commands, steps, or levels in a menu or file hierarchy.
  164. The first part of any path is a command statement that must be
  165. executed to access the remote source of the information. Type the
  166. first part of the path, up to any slashes, and press the Enter
  167. key. If there are no slashes, type the entire phrase.
