  48. In response to the characteristic about my father, I can think of many 
  49. things. But the one that sticks in my mind is his non complaining 
  50. nature. He had severe rhuematoid arthritis that caused him great pain. 
  51. Yet, he never complainmed, cursed his lot in life or allowed it to stop 
  52. him.

  63. The most thing I admire abpout my father, is that he is my step father.
  64. He married my mother one week before I turned seven years old. And when
  65. I turned nine years old he adopted me. See he married in to a instant 
  66. family. And took over where my real father did not give a DARN if I 
  67. lived or died. When I was seven years old I was really messed up. My 
  68. real father abused me and my mother and tried to kill me. So I did not 
  69. think no one loved me but my mother.  When my Father now step into the 
  70. picture he got me to turn around. He even asked me if he could adopt me
  71. and of course I said YES.. Now that I am 25 and a seven year old 
  72. daughter of my own. He has never changed. He has been there for me when
  73. I was down and things were not going right and there for me when I was 
  74. up and going strong. Even though he is my step father by marriage and 
  75. adopted father by papers.  He will always be my real father is my 
  76. heart.  For he as done for me and my mother I admired him then and even
  77. more now!!

  90. Ahhhhh, Dad.  Thinking of Dad conjures up memories of walking hand and 
  91. hand down a railroad track, horsebackriding for the first time, 
  92. sparklers on the 4th and most importantly the feeling of being safe, 
  93. secure and very loved.  What do I admire?  I admire my dad for staying 
  94. with the same company for 21 years and providing for his family.  I 
  95. admire my dad for loving my mom for 45 years.  I admire my dad for his 
  96. conviction in his religious beliefs.  I especially admire my dad for 
  97. giving me, even now that I'm 34, the feeling of being safe, secure and 
  98. very loved.    I love you Dad....Mary

  108. What do i like best about my father?

  110. He has a big head of thick curly hair and he is very tall and he gives 
  111. the biggest , warmest hugs in the world!!!

  124. Joe, a comment first... although I do not have anything against father's
  125. day (or mother's day for that matter) I sometimes get bothered by the
  126. flurry of how wonderful father/mother was/is... hearing that sort of
  127. thing all over the place is really tough on those of us who did not have
  128. "good" parents... my (age 14) son's father died January of last year,
  129. drunk. He was, the last few years, verbally and emotionally abusive,
  130.                                     
  131. both before and after we divorced. My son has a few good memories of him
  132. but still, father's day and its flood of wonderful father talk is hard.
  133. Not everyone, in fact many people, have had one or both parents who were
  134. awful... no consideration is given to this
  135.  
  136. As to my father... he too was an alcoholic (the odds are if you have an
  137. alcoholic parent you will either be one or marry one, I did both). He
  138. did sober up for the last six years of his life and I think what I
  139. admire most about him is that in the spring of 1974, when he was
  140. informed that he was dying of pancreatic cancer and had only months to
  141. live, he spent his time helping his family and friends accept this and
  142. by his own acceptance helped us all through those last months.

  149. Each month, I usually try to answer my own question.  I'm going to do
  150. that now, but in a non-direct way; via answering Ms. Fee, the last
  151. respondent above.
  152.  
  153. Holly, I certainly didn't mean to cause you annoyance or pain by my
  154. question.  If I did so, I apologise.
  155.  
  156. To be perfectly honest, my life growing up was rather similar to your
  157. son's.  My father was an alcoholic for as long as I can remember, and
  158. was both emotionally, verbally, *and* physically abusive to both myself
  159. and my mother.
  160.  
  161. He died of lymphoma cancer when I was 11 and I wasn't the least bit
  162. sorry to see him go.  Over the years, some of the wounds have healed and
  163. I've wished that he'd stayed around and given me the chance to know him
  164. as an adult.  C'est la vie.  Life goes on.  
  165.  
  166. At any rate, Father's Day doesn't mean much to me.  However, it does to
  167. a lot of other people out there, which is why we asked the question.
