THE TAVERN BBS
GENERAL INFORMATION
THE TAVERN is a free and open bulletin board run by a group of
private citizens in Chazy, NY, for the enjoyment of its guest. The
board was established several years ago on an IBM compatible XT at
2400 baud. We have grown to a 486 AT class system three nodes
at 300 - 76800 baud. The board continues to grow and to be popular
in the North Country and around the US. We support several types
of computers and will try to accommodate all guestsin the creation
of conferences that will address specific needs.
The Tavern Is part of the SECnet Conference located in Plattsburgh
NY. The Tavern acts as Network Hub for the SECnet and we encourage
all our guests to join us in the SECnet. The Tavern also participates
in many other net's currently we echo conferences through Intelec,
Smartnet, UnInet, FriendsNet, YouthNet, RoseNet and Planet Earth Net.
The list continues through the support of our guest.

The nature of the board requires that we establish guidelines its
use by callers to insure that we OFFEND no one. While such a
restriction will prevent us from PLEASING everyone, we recognize
that you can't PLEASE everyone - so you have to please yourself.
(Thank you Rick Nelson.)
1. First among those we wish not to offend is the government.
The government, at several levels, becomes offended by the sharing
of copyrighted materials. (The Federal statute is 18USC2319 .)
This board, being an expensive proposition, does not want to become
the property of the US Government. Therefore, DO NOT, upload
copyright material. If you see material here that you recognize
as copyrighted, please let us know so that we can remove it and,
if necessary, the guest who put it up. We make every effort to
monitor the uploads, but, we are not infallible. As you can see
from the file listings, we have thousands of programs available.
As far as we know, all the programs available for download are PD
or ShareWare. Please help us keep it that way.
2. The other firsts of those we do not wish to offend are our
guest. This board is here for your use and pleasure. Kindly
refrain from using profane language in the open conferences. The
ADULT conference is open only to adults with an adult
interest. Language there is as wild as you wish.
3. Restrictions:
a: The first restriction is time. We have set up
security levels with different time availability
that we feel will allow sufficient access to the
board at all times. If you have a special need for
more time, leave a message with your reasons and we
will attempt to accommodate you. See Main Board
Bulletin # 3 about security levels.
b: The ADULT conference is restricted to guests
over 21 years of age. We, the SYSOPS are
all old enough to have been around during the
original 'old enough to die for the country - old
enough to vote' rallies. We recognize that there
are many guests who feel that the age should be 18.
Our response is that we wish to avoid hassles. We
do not wish to offend ourselves or the parents of
our guests. If an 18 year old displays some of the
adult files to a child, we would have to listen to
the parent of the 18 year old. If a 21 year old did
it, we could tell the parent to go speak to the
adult.
c: UPLOADS/DOWNLOADS: We have become aware that some
computer dealers are giving out our number for the
purpose of obtaining free software. We have no real
problem with that - we are here for that purpose.
However, we have a moral problem with 'board rape.'
We have removed the UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD ratio based
on the number of bytes or files but support is a
2-way street. More to the point, the
board does not exist solely for the purpose of
giving and getting programs. The board exists to
encourage guests to talk to each other.
d: MAIL: As we just said, this board is here for the
purpose of communication. We are part of an
international interboard mail network. Use the
mail; send messages; learn more about computing;
help others learn from your experiences.
e: GAMES: In the GAMES conference (21), we have more than
40 doors and lots of games. Join, play, compete,
enjoy. Remember - 'It's only a game.'
4. Our security levels have been set up to allow access to as many
people as possible to the board. The new guest is assigned a level
20 clearance and is granted 10 minutes of time. After
registration, the security level is increased to 60 and time is
raised to 30 minutes. A script questionnaire is provided in the
Main Board (Command S). Completion of this questionnaire and
sending in a copy of proof of age (Drivers lic. ect ) will
allow the guest to gain access to the adult conference.
Please note, Adult file access is limited to adult subscribers.
Higher levels of access are available in several ways.
Subscription to the board by donating money to offset the expenses
of running two machines and maintaining telephone lines is
appreciated, but, not required. Our expression of appreciation is
the granting of more time to the guest. A donation of $10 (student) per
year will raise the level to 90 with 60 minutes of access time. A
donation of $20 per year will raise the access level to 95 with 60
minutes of time. A donation of $40 per year will raise the
security level to 100 with 90 minutes of time. We will in addition
accept donations of hardware in exchange for subscription time. As
we are still building the Network, we need additional hardware.
Visiting SYSOPS will be granted a security level of 120 with a
time limit of 60 minutes. The requirements for this level are that
you operate your own BBS, that you complete the questionnaire
regarding your board and status, and grant reciprocal access to
your board. We may call the board to insure that it is a public
access BBS.
We appreciate the usage we get, and encourage all to call. We
would not be here if not for the Guests who have expressed an
interest in the board. By allowing as many people as possible to
get in, we can make the board better than it is. Please call
often, and encourage your friends to call. If you have problems
or complaints, leave a message and we will try to accommodate.
