  6. The TRICKLE server is a 'concentrator' of FTP sites into central
  7. servers.  Each server has its own (large) cache disk to store files
  8. that have been recently ordered by users, and is in communication
  9. with all other TRICKLE servers about the contents of its cache.
  10. When a user orders a file that is not in local cache, TRICKLE can
  11. usually forward this command to one other TRICKLE server that is
  12. known to hold the file.  In some cases, "broadcasts" to all other
  13. TRICKLEs for this file is necessary, and if the file is new, or
  14. accessed very infrequently, it is requested from one of the 3 FTP
  15. slave-servers it has.  These 3 are special servers who fetch the
  16. file via FTP and send it via NJE to TRICKLE.

  18. TRICKLE servers reduce load on FTP sites substantially: Their
  19. incoming-to outgoing file rate is usually 1/5.  Meaning, each cached
  20. file is usually sent out five times during its lifetime in the cache
  21. disk.

  23. TRICKLE supports a wide range of delivery methods to the user.
  24. Besides the usual email+(UUE,XXE,BTOA,etc), it can also FTP the
  25. files to the user, or use NJE SENDFILE where possible and desired.

  27. It is possible to subscribe to file patterns, such as
  28. <MSDOS.VIRUS>SCAN and to have server deliver you a new copy of the
  29. file each time it is made available.  A special keyword, '*' can be
  30. used instead of the pattern to subscribe to an entire
  31. subdirectories, like: <OS2.NEW>*

  33. It mirrors many FTP site's popular directories:
  34. (exact site names are described in the help file): MSDOS, MISC,
  35. SIGM, MACINTOS, LINUX, UNIX-C, GARFIELD, OS2, KERMIT, X11, IBM,
  36. VM-CMS, WUARCHIVE, EXPO-MIT, UUNET, TEX, AMIGA, ARCHIVES.

  38. The servers are accessible from any connected network, via email or
  39. NJE interactive messages.  Send a:
  40. /HELP
  41. command in a mail message (with the leading slash) to:
  42. trickle@frmop11.cnusc.fr     (or TRICKLE@FRMOP11.BITNET), or
  43. trickle@hearn.nic.surfnet.nl (TRICKLE@HEARN.BITNET) for a help file,
  44. and to assist you locate your closest TRICKLE server (there are
  45. currently 12 TRICKLE servers).

  47. Note! This server code is entirely different than the TRICKLE server
  48. written by John Fisher (which I called "FTP slave-servers" in this
  49. document).  However, John Fisher's server is greatly used by TRICKLE
  50. servers to fetch the files.
