Dear SysOp,
First, let me introduce myself, my name is David Place, a long time SysOp
(September 1985), long time modemer (1983), and computer enthusiast. I am
the SysOp of The FeatherNet HQ BBS in Tampa, FL and run FeatherNet PRO!
Why do I tell you this? To show you that I have been, and continue to have
an interest in, the telecommunications arena and am always looking for new
ways to improve it.
For many years I have been echoing FidoNet and enjoyed it. Unfortunately
I have seldom lived in an area that I could get Fido without incurring a
toll call! The other problem is, most of the people on Fido that I send
messages to are all thousands of miles away!
I set out to start a new Network, via QWK/FNTS that would build off a base
and grow outward so that each node would have a local call to get mail, in
this way mail moves a little slower than Fido, but is much cheaper for the
SysOps pocket. QWK technology allows many boards that otherwise would not
carry messages to carry them, so we decided to build off QWK and also give
you all the Fido technology for speed and ease if you were setup for it. I
wanted the topology of the net to primarily be in the areas that the users
were from. Thus we started a local Massachusetts Net. (MA-Net)
And so /\/\ass/\/et was born on November 1st, 1992. Within about 3 weeks,
Sam Gudgel and I, after numerous brain storming sessions came up with the
basic MassNet package. Our basic concept is still alive, but, we had no
idea when we actually started tossing mail around the first of December,
1992 that it would grow so fast! Within 2 days we had 2 more nodes. By
the end of the first full month of operation we had acquired 3 more area
codes (a total of 11 sites)! We now have regional HUBS across the USA to
include Hawaii and more coming online each month! Our concept of the local
call has not died. The Network is growing so fast, we look at it this way:
as each new hub opens, they can make their areas grow outward, this way we
preservie the local call net idea. Each state grows their net outward and
then the main hub connects with the national hub.
On June 20th, 1993, due to the fact a MA teachers group and the local area
FidoNet hubs, both using the name MassNet, we made the decision to change
"our" MassNet name to "LinkUSA". We are expanding so quickly now that we
felt it was appropriate to more acurately reflect our hopes and ideals
with this new name.
I invite you to take a look at the package that I have sent you and truly
consider offering to your users a messaging system that is growing by
leaps and bounds. If you have any questions, feel free to NetMail me at
FTNS 1:377/59 or voice at (813) 249-8322 and I will be more than happy to
answer any questions you may have.
