  2.      This utility was put together for owners of Hewlett-
  3. Packard Deskjet/Deskwriter series printers.
  4.  
  5.      If you have owned your inkjet printer for more than
  6. a few months then you have discovered that the ink
  7. cartridge eventually runs out of ink.  Unlike dot matrix
  8. printer ribbons, which are produced by an array of
  9. companies, the replacement ink cartridge for the
  10. Deskjet/Deskwriter printer is manufactured solely by
  11. Hewlett-Packard.  In one respect this is good.  Since the
  12. circuitry built into each cartridge is quite complex, you
  13. want to be sure that the new replacement cartridge will
  14. work when installed - and Hewlett-Packard is known for
  15. quality products.  The disadvantage to a sole
  16. manufacturer, however, is that there is no competition,
  17. and thus the price of the cartridge is dictated by the
  18. manufacturer.

  20.      The price of a new replacement cartridge (part
  21. number 51608A) for the Deskjet/Deskwriter printer is
  22. $19.99 (as of Summer 1991).  This is the cost if obtained
  23. directly from Hewlett-Packard.  If you own a Deskjet/
  24. Deskwriter series printer and think nothing about
  25. spending this amount every time you run out of ink, this
  26. document will probably be of little interest to you.  But
  27. for those who would like to save $10-$20 when replacing
  28. their empty inkjet cartridge, then read on.

  30.      $19.99 may not sound like much to a computer user,
  31. but it starts to add up if you use your printer on a
  32. daily basis.  In fact, if you subtract the cost of the
  33. printer itself, the price per printed page produced by a
  34. inkjet printer is HIGHER than the cost of a similar page
  35. produced on a laser printer.  The cost of the replacement
  36. ink cartridge is what makes this so.

  38.      But think for a minute next time you replace that
  39. ink cartridge, "If the only thing wrong with the
  40. cartridge is that it has run out of ink, then why can I
  41. not refill it with more ink?"
  42.  
  43.      The cartridge itself can last a long time after it
  44. has run out of ink.  In fact, if refilled, it is not
  45. unusual for one cartridge to accept over a half dozen
  46. refills before giving up the ghost.  By that time you
  47. will have saved over $100!

  49.      If saving money is not of interest to you, then
  50. consider another aspect of this issue - the environment.
  51. In the U.S.A. we are producing garbage at an enormous
  52. rate.  The 1990's have become the decade of recycling and
  53. environmental awareness.  To throw away an empty
  54. cartridge when it can still be used seems wasteful.  Is
  55. not refilling an empty but reusable cartridge a good
  56. idea?  You save money, and decrease the amount of trash
  57. created - what could be wrong with that?  If laser
  58. printer owners are now recycling their used toner
  59. cartridges, then why can't inkjet owners reuse their
  60. empty ink cartridges?

  62.      With these exciting thoughts in mind, it is rather
  63. disappointing to discover that our favorite printer
  64. manufacturer disapproves of the refilling concept, and
  65. hence does not provide customers with the necessary
  66. components to refill their empty cartridges.

  68.      Not to fret, however.  Many companies have come to
  69. our rescue.  Inkjet refill kits are now available through
  70. a variety of channels.  The only drawback, however, is
  71. that many of these kits are not cheap.  Although you
  72. still come out ahead by refilling your empty inkjet
  73. cartridges by using the commercial kits, you would save
  74. much more money if you could obtain the ink and syringe
  75. locally.

  77.      For the do-it-yourselfer, the ink and syringe can be
  78. obtained locally at a very small cost, normally under
  79. $7.00.  By the way, you are not limited to refilling your
  80. empty cartridge with just black ink.  You can refill your
  81. empty cartridges with colored ink, if you so choose.

  83.      For those readers who think that The DeskJet Survival
  84. Kit is some sort of gimmick, a joke, or a rip-off, here is
  85. a letter from a DJSK registrant from Nigeria, AFRICA (of
  86. all places!).  The registrant followed the tips and used an
  87. ink that we suggested in the database provided by The
  88. DeskJet Survival Kit:

  108.  │   availability of the print cartridge and not      │
  109.  │   the cost.  At $40 per piece (you won't believe   │
  110.  │   this), one is happy to buy one when available.   │
  111.  │   But often, it is not in stock in computer        │
  112.  │   shops.                                           │

  118.  │   The beauty of the kit is that the refill ink     │
  119.  │   (------ -----, brand name withheld), is          │
  120.  │   available in most bookshops and disposable       │
  121.  │   syringes are available in most chemists.  I      │
  122.  │   had to go back to my dot-matrix while waiting    │
  123.  │   for the order of the cartridge to arrive.  I     │
  124.  │   was still waiting while the kit arrived and      │
  125.  │   within a couple of hours I was back using the    │
  126.  │   DeskJet again!                                   │
