║ ABOUT HELP ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This help and documentation is for the shareware version of the
tracking program. Help & documentation for the historical
analysis program can be found from the main screen of that
program, which is an option from the main screen of the tracking
program.
The help in this system is organized by menu function and
sub-option. If you want help on any function simply select it
from the help menu and information on it will be displayed.
While displaying the information, you may select the print
command to send that section to the printer. You may also
select the print documentation option to send all of the
documentation to the printer. When the command prompt <ACTION>
is visible, selecting that option will display an example of
graphic output related to the topic. All of the examples in
this help are from the Atlantic version. Users of the Pacific
version (PACTRAK) should not be concerned as the functions being
shown work identically as the Atlantic version (HURRTRAK).
(The help in this system is for both HURRTRAK & PACTRAK.)
*010GENERAL INFORMATION
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ GENERAL INFORMATION ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The HURRTRAK & PACTRAK systems were originally designed and
written in the mid 1980's by a meteorologist for his personal
use. Since that time, significant improvements were made, and
in August, 1992, they were made available to the general public.
Version 4 in 1993 introduced some particularly attractive
enhancements with an emphasis on tracking chart graphics and the
addition of a historical analysis program (HURRHIST). Version 5
in 1994 continues that trend with additional enhancements to the
tracking chart graphics and a revamping of the user interface.
Due to more rigorous demands of the professional community,
there is now HURRTRAK-PE & PACTRAK-PE (Copyright 1994 PC Weather
Products, the Professional Editions of both. This version is
designed for the professional & business use of the system.
The philosophy around the design of the system has always been
to make this system the single best reference for all
information regarding storm tracking/forecasting. The extremely
detailed charts, a multitude of city locations, the ability to
create custom tracking charts and the representation of the eye
wall are a few examples of that.
Overview:
The tracking system will chart the progress of any Atlantic
(HURRTRAK) or Eastern Pacific (PACTRAK) tropical cyclone.
It features:
- 20 HIGHLY detailed tracking charts (9 in Pacific)
- High resolution geography
- A user customizable tracking chart
- Print capabilities (data & tracking chart, see below)
- Sophisticated climatology based forecast capabilities
- Ability to show storm information on the chart (CHART NOTES)
- Depiction of a representative EYE WALL (allowing the user to
determine the area being "hardest hit"
- Ability to store & represent the area of hurricane and gale
force winds
- Ability to display distances from storm center to user
definable cities
- Ability to display many user definable city locations and
names on one chart
- VGA graphics
- New user interface (pull down menus)
- Mouse control
- PSEUDO-ZOOMING for viewing detailed charts
- Excellent performance
- Automatic saving of users preferences between sessions
- Extensive on-line help/documentation
- Ability to vary the speed and distance units of measure from
US to Metric.
Performance
For maximum performance with the system, use a software caching
program (SMARTDRV, etc.).
Mouse Control
If you have a MS compatible mouse installed on the system,
mouse control will be enabled. On the "text" screens mouse
usage follows the normal software industry standards. The left
button is the selection "button" for all menu functions and
sub-option items. Mouse control in the graphic modes of the
system are unique to the function you are using. These control
will be described, as they apply, within the documentation for
those functions.
Keyboard Control
The menu functions and options can be selected without a
mouse by first hitting the <ALT> key. This highlights a
letter for each available function. Entering that key will
activate that function. The same actions are required for
selecting a option within a function. The <ESC> key is the
equivalent keyboard action for the cancel command. The TAB
and arrow keys will navigate you around the systems data
screens. With a little practice, keyboard navigation becomes
very easy. For greatest ease of use within the system, I
suggest using the mouse.
Units of Measure
The system unit of measure is set to US (Miles per hour /
statute miles) when installed. It can be easily changed within
the OPTION menu function to Metric (Knots / nautical miles).
ALL SPEEDS AND DISTANCE VALUES ARE DISPLAYED IN THE UNIT OF
MEASURE SELECTED.
Printing
The system's default printer port is LPT1. If your system's
printer port is different, edit the LPT.DAT file and change
the one line entry to the proper port definition.
Printing Hurricane Charts
In order to print the hurricane tracking charts, the DOS
GRAPHICS command must be initiated BEFORE entering the system.
(It may be best to put it into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.) Unless
your printer is specified in the list below, try using the
default GRAPHICS profile by entering the GRAPHICS command
without a type option (i.e. GRAPHICS /R). This command should
only be issued once per DOS session. Its stays "resident"
in your PC's memory until you reboot or turn it off.
Your DOS manual has more information on this command but for
best results make sure you use the /R option. The following is
more information on the DOS GRAPHICS command for DOS 6.0.
Graphics
Loads a program into memory that allows MS-DOS to print the
information displayed on your screen. Use the GRAPHICS command
only if you are using a color or graphics adapter.
The GRAPHICS command supports the CGA, EGA, and VGA graphics
display modes.
Syntax
GRAPHICS [type] [[drive:][path]filename] [/R] [/B] [/LCD]
[/PRINTBOX:STD|/PRINTBOX:LCD]
Parameters
type
Specifies the type of printer. The following list shows
each valid value for this parameter and gives a brief
description of its meaning:

[drive:][path]filename
Specifies the location and name of the printer profile that
contains information about all supported printers. If this
parameter is omitted, MS-DOS looks for a file called
GRAPHICS.PRO in the current directory and in the directory
that contains the GRAPHICS.COM file.
Switches
/R
Prints the image as it appears on the screen (white
characters on a black background) rather than reversed
(black characters on a white background). The latter occurs
by default.
/B
Prints the background in color. This switch is valid for
COLOR4 and COLOR8 printers.
/LCD
Prints an image by using the liquid crystal display (LCD)
aspect ratio instead of the CGA aspect ratio. The effect of
this switch is the same as that of /PRINTBOX:LCD.
/PRINTBOX:STD or /PRINTBOX:LCD
Selects the print-box size. Check the first operand of the
PRINTBOX statement in your GRAPHICS.PRO file. If that
operand is STD, specify the /PRINTBOX:STD switch. If that
operand is LCD, specify the /PRINTBOX:LCD switch. You can
abbreviate PRINTBOX as PB.
************************ EXAMPLES **************************
For a DESKJET 550C: GRAPHICS DESKJET /R

*021ADD NEW STORM
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ADD NEW STORM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The NEW function within the edit option is used to add a new
storm to the defined default storm directory (see option
section). If any prior unsaved started or changed storm exists
when this option is selected, a warning message is displayed
allowing the user to first save the data before starting a new
storm.
Otherwise, to start a new storm you will be prompted for the
name of the storm and the first set of storm data.
The STORM NAME must be 8 characters or less since this is used
as the DOS file name. Storms with a name of more than 8
characters, must be abbreviated. The storms initial data must
also be entered to start a new storm. That data includes:
DATE - must be entered in MMDD (MONTH DAY) or MMDDYY
(MONTH,DAY,YEAR). If MMDD is entered then the current
year is used for the storm year.
TIME - enter in HHMM (HOUR MINUTE) 24 hour format (typically
GMT).
LATITUDE - Storm's Latitude Position XX.X
HURRTRAK (0 - 80.0)
LONGITUDE - Storm's Longitude Position XX.X (0 - 110.0)
PACTRAK (80 - 180.0)
WIND SPEED - Storm's Wind Speed (MPH/KTS) (20 - 250)
Note: the speed UOM is controlled by selection
in the Options menu function.
PRESSURE <optional> - Storm's central pressure in MB (850 -
1016)
EXTENT OF HURRICANE FORCE WINDS IN NORTHERN QUADRANT <optional>
- Check the appropriate box indicating the quadrant of the
greatest radius of hurricane force winds (WE, NW, NO, NE, EA)
- Enter the number of miles the hurricane force winds
extend in this direction (000-500).
- Enter the number of miles hurricane force winds
extend out in the opposite direction (000-500)
EXTENT OF GALE FORCE WINDS IN NORTHERN QUADRANT <optional>
- Check the appropriate box indicating the quadrant of the
greatest radius of gale force winds (WE, NW, NO, NE, EA)
- Enter the number of miles the gale force winds
extend in this direction (000-500).
- Enter the number of miles gale force winds extend
out in the opposite direction (000-500)
Example of entering EXTENT OF WINDS fields:
For a storm with gale force winds extending 150 miles to the NE
and 90 miles to the SW the user would select:
DIRECTION MILES MILES OPPOSITE
(< >WE < >NW < >NO <X>NE < >EA) 150 090
Note: The entry of the data for the extent of hurricane and
gale force winds will be enabled or disabled depending on the
storms peak wind speed. (I.E. The entry of the area of
hurricane force winds is only allowed if the storm is a
hurricane.)
Each data field is verified as it is entered rather than when
the <OK> is selected. If a field is in error, you must correct
it to move to the next (or prior) field. If you want to quit
the add function, the ESC key will return you to the main
screen.
NOTE: Up to 150 observation points per storm is allowed.
*022OPEN PAST STORM
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ OPEN PAST STORM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option loads an existing storm's data into memory. The
storm will be read in from the current defined default
directory. The user however, is able to open a storm file
(.STM) from any drive and directory on the system. The desired
storm must either be entered or selected (mouse or keyboard)
from the list.
If an unsaved new or changed storm exists when this option is
selected, a warning message is displayed allowing the user to
first save the file.
A set of some well known past storms have been included with
the system in the storm directory called PAST.
This tracking program is best suited in analyzing current storms
rather than inspecting past ones. HURRHIST, selectable from the
main tracking screen, is a separate program designed for
reviewing past storms and includes a database of over 105 years
for the Atlantic and 40 years for the Eastern Pacific.
*023SAVE CURRENT STORM
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SAVE CURRENT STORM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The save storm option is used to save the current storm data.
The storm will be saved to the current defined default storm
directory. The user however, is able to save the storm data to
any drive and directory on the system. In addition, the storm
name can be changed by saving a storm under a different name
than what was opened. This is useful when tracking a tropical
depression (which has a number) that becomes a named storm. The
depression can be opened under its old (numbered) name and then
saved as the named storm. (Note, in this example the numbered
storm is not deleted by the system but rather can be deleted by
the user using DOS commands.)
*024DOS SHELL
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ DOS SHELL ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The DOS Shell option allows the user to "exit" to DOS to execute
other programs or DOS commands without exiting the
hurricane tracking system. The user can return to the system
by entering EXIT at the command prompt.
*025EXIT SYSTEM
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ EXIT SYSTEM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option exits the hurricane tracking system. If a storm
has been added or changed but not saved, a warning message will
be displayed allowing the user the option to save the data
before exiting.
*031ADD NEW STORM DATA
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ADD NEW STORM DATA ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows a user to add additional storm observation
data for a opened or new storm. New observations must be
later than the previous storm observation. If you want to
insert prior observation data, the CHANGE function must be
used. The storm observation data fields are described in the
Add New Storm (FILE NEW) help or documentation.
*032CHANGE STORM OBSERVATION DATA
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ CHANGE STORM OBSERVATION DATA ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The "Change" function allows the user to CHANGE, DELETE or
INSERT storm observations. When selected, a list of the current
storm's observations are displayed as shown below:

the data entry screen where you can edit any of the data fields
except date and time. Selecting <OK> from this panel will save
the entered change to memory and return the user to the initial
selection screen.
To DELETE an observation, again highlight the observation from
the list and select the <DELETE> command. This will remove the
observation from the list and memory without any user
confirmation.
TO INSERT an observation, select the <INSERT> command. This
will take the user to the data entry screen whereby the user can
add the observation data. Any date and time may be entered
provided it is in the same calendar year as the other storm
data. When <OK> is selected, the new observation will be
inserted into storm's data and the user is returned to the
initial selection screen.

When a chart is displayed there are several options available
to the user.
. <S> - Select another tracking chart (only available on large
tracking chart). When this is selected all of the
available chart's borders are superimposed onto the
large tracking chart.
The sub-options available at this time are:
<S> - highlights a different tracking chart.
<P> - plots the current highlighted tracking chart
<Q> - quits the select other tracking chart option
and returns the user to the main system screen
. <F> - Back up to large tracking chart (available on all charts
except the large tracking chart)
. <C> - Display city names. Depending on the size of the
tracking chart either all of the cities will be
displayed or just the ones indicated for larger charts
(City location PLOT IND = "X"). This option is
particularly useful when a storm is nearing landfall.
. <P> - Print chart (see note in GENERAL INFORMATION on setting
up the proper DOS GRAPHICS print command.
<ENTER> - Hitting the enter key will return the user to the main
system screen.
*MOUSE CONTROL*
All of the above mentioned options are available via the mouse
by "clicking" (left button) on top of the words for that
option which appear at the bottom of the screen. Additional
mouse capabilities are:
. Clicking on the open area of the screen when viewing the
large tracking chart will graphically display additional
tracking charts (see <S> option above). As the mouse is
moved around the screen different tracking charts
are highlighted. Clicking on the left button again will
then display (full screen) the highlighted chart.
. By clicking on the open area of the screen when viewing any
chart except the large tracking chart, the user will "swap"
to the large tracking chart.
. By clicking with the RIGHT BUTTON, the user will exit the
PLOT storm track function.
Chart legend:
When the storm track is plotted there are several items to be
aware of:
. The color of the track is an indication of the strength of
the storm. The track is gray for tropical storm force winds
or less, black for winds from 75 to 110 MPH (65 to 96 KTS),
red for winds from 111 to 154 MPH (96 to 133 KTS) and white
for winds of 155 MPH (134 KTS) or greater.
. Every position of the storm except for the latest one is
marked with a small circle (10 mile diameter). All 1000Z GMT
observation times are colored white while 2200Z GMT
observations are red. All other position circles are left
uncolored.
. The last position of the storm is indicated with a red donut
shaped ring. This represents the area where the eye wall is
typically located. Generally this is the most destructive
portion of a hurricane, particularly to the right of the
storm track. Keep in mind that this representation is based
on an average hurricane model. In nature, the size and
character of the eye and eye wall varies considerably. The
system assumes that the average eye is 20 statute miles wide
with an eye wall width of 10 statute miles and is completely
closed.
. If the hurricane force wind field data was entered than this
will be represented by the area within the red circle. This
is only plotted at the storm's latest position. For
simplicity, the area of hurricane force winds are assumed
to be a circular pattern although not necessarily centered at
the storm's center.
. If the gale force wind field data was entered than this
will be represented by the area within the yellow circle.
This is only plotted at the storm's latest position. For
simplicity, the area of gale force are assumed to be a
circular pattern although not necessarily centered at the
storm's center.
Chart legend (optional items):
Depending how the system options are set additional data may be
displayed when plotting a storm. The system will optionally
plot Chart Notes and city distance on the tracking chart:
. Chart Notes: This data is written to the right of a plot point
and is of the format MMDDYY/TTTT WSP PRS, where MMDDYY is
the date, TTTT is the time, WSP is the wind speed and PRS is
the central pressure. i.e. 090189/0000 70 995 NOTE: If
observation points are very close together or the large scale
map is used, some chart notes will not be shown to prevent
overwriting.
. City Distance: The distances from the storms center to certain
cities or locations is displayed (in green) at that location.
The cities/locations to display is controlled within the
"Updating City Locations" function.

║ CALCULATE FORECAST TRACK ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
The calculate forecast option analyzes the storm's current
movement and all "similar" storms in the historical database to
compute a blended climatological forecast track. The historical
database is analyzed for every 6 hour forecast position to
determine the next forecast position. This is iterated
(repeated) 12 times to compute a 72 hour forecast track. When
the forecast calculation is complete, forecast comments and
actual positions are displayed.

The user then has the option of either PRINTING the data,
CANCELING (quitting) or showing the large tracking chart which
displays the current and forecast tracks. The forecast
positions are indicated by a green track with 6 hour positions
indicated by small red circles. If data is added or changed
during a sessions, the forecast option must be rerun to
calculate a new forecast.
<<<<<<<<< C A U T I O N >>>>>>>>>>>
The forecast track is based on a time sliding weighted average
of present movement and 105+ years of climatology (40+ years for
PACTRAK). This is to be used for casual analysis and should not
be relied on for any critical decisions. Always make your
primary source of hurricane forecast information the National
Hurricane Center.

╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ CREATE CUSTOM TRACKING CHART ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This feature of the system allows the user to personalize the
system to their, or any location. Based on user
specifications, the system will create a custom tracking chart
which is then integrated with the tracking & analysis system.
If storm data was added or changed during the current session
without saving when this option is selected, a warning message
will be displayed allowing the user to first save the storm
data.
The customize routine needs the following information:
Center Latitude:
Center Longitude:
Width of chart (in degrees longitude):
With this information, the system will create the chart,
and then return the user to the main tracking screen.
NOTE: Due to the variable nature of customizing, certain ocean
areas may not be colored appropriately. This does not affect
the plotting routines, etc.. Also, the customize routine is
meant for creating generally small scale charts, not larger than
the large pre-defined system chart.
* This function is not available on the shareware version *
* due to the large data files required *

The fields included are:
CITY NAME - Name of the city location (up to 25 characters)
State - State or country code. For reference only (i.e. not
used by the system).
LAT - Latitude (North) of the city location, expressed in
decimal format. This field is always positive.
LONG - Longitude (West) of the city location, expressed in
decimal format. This field is always positive.
PLOT IND - The plot indicator is marked if the user wants this
location to be displayed on every tracking chart.
If not marked (X) the city name will only be
displayed on small scale tracking charts.
The command options while viewing the list are:
CHANGE: This option allows the user to update the selected city
location. Any of the fields can be updated. When
complete, selecting the <OK> command will make this
changes immediately to the location database.
DELETE: This option allows the user to delete the selected city
location. No confirmation is done and the location is
deleted immediately.
INSERT: This option allows the user to add a new location. All
of the fields, except plot indicator (PI) must be
entered. Selecting <OK> will add this new location
immediately to the location database in sorted (by
city name) sequence.
The input screen which is used for change and insert is shown
below:

cities. Any landmarks of interest (capes, bays, etc.) may be
added to the location database.
*72ACHANGE DEFAULT HURRICANE DIRECTORY
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ CHANGE DEFAULT HURRICANE DIRECTORY ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option is used to change the current default storm
directory. When selected, a list of valid storm directories are
displayed with the current one marked. To change, simply select
the desired directory. Keep in mind that any file operations
(open, save) will now operate from the new default directory.
It is a good idea to segregate your storm database by directory.
For example, you can store all 1994 storm in a 1994 directory,
1995 in it's own directory and so on. The system is installed
with one storm directory called PAST. Past notable storms
are stored here. (Note: Storm directories are actually sub
directories of the HURRTRAK or PACTRAK directory). The default
storm directory is saved from one session to another.
*72BADD HURRICANE DIRECTORY
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ ADD HURRICANE DIRECTORY ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to create a new directory. It must
follow DOS "rules" being less than 9 characters with no invalid
characters (., /, etc.). Adding a new directory also makes it
the default storm directory. NOTE: The maximum number of storm
directories allowed is 25.
*073SET FONT SIZE
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SET FONT SIZE ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to change the default font size of
the chart notes and city-storm distance values for the
Hurricane Tracking and History system.
The valid options are:
Small
Medium
Large
(Note: The large tracking chart always defaults to the small
size regardless of this value). The default font size is saved
from one session to another.
*082SET SYSTEM UNIT OF MEASURE
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ SET SYSTEM UNIT OF MEASURE ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to set the units of measure that
they prefer the system to use. The two options are:
US - This option sets the system to Miles per Hour for speed
and statute miles for distance.
METRIC - This option set the system to Knots for speed and
nautical miles for distance.
This option also sets the unit of measure for the Hurricane
History system also. This setting is saved from one session to
another.
Note: If a storm is loaded when this option is selected it's
data will be converted and displayed in the new units.
*074DISPLAY STORM TO CITY DISTANCE OPTION
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ DISPLAY STORM TO CITY DISTANCE OPTION ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to toggle a switch to turn the
display of city to storm distances ON/OFF. This setting is
saved from one session to another.

║ DISPLAY CHART NOTES OPTION ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option allows the user to toggle a switch to turn the
display of chart notes ON/OFF. This setting is saved from one
session to another.
*080HURRICANE HISTORY SYSTEM
╔═══════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ HURRICANE HISTORY SYSTEM ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════╝
This option exits the tracking program and enters the hurricane
history program. If an unsaved new or changed storm exists when
this option is selected, a warning message is displayed allowing
the user to first save the storm. For more information on the
history program, display help in that system.
