MAKE A NEW FILE: You are allowed to make a new file and give it any
name which you wish.
COPY FROM AN OLD FILE: You can make a new file which is a copy of an
old file. This saves you a lot of typing, because the file is

all CAPITAL LETTERS.
Selecting LOWER CASE will print all words in the index using
all LOWER CASE LETTERS.
Select -USE FIRST OCCURRENCE- to print the word exactly as it
appeared when the word was first encountered by the program.
The DEFAULT is LOWER CASE.
* HELP WINDOW 15

PRINT WORD COUNT: Will print the number of times each word
appears, to the right of each word, enclosed in brackets.
DON'T PRINT WORD COUNT: No word count will be printed.
SET MAX WORD COUNT: You can set a limit on how many times a word
appears before it is considered a noise word.
EXAMPLES:
ZERO = No limit to the number of times a word can appear.
50 = Any word appearing 50 times or more will be considered

61 = Same as above, but the threshold is 61 times.
* HELP WINDOW 16

words are contained within this page.
* HELP WINDOW 17
===== LINE NUMBERING IN THE ASCII FILE ====
1 - ASCII CONTAINS LINE NUMBERS: Most AMERICAN ASCII transcripts
have lines which start with a line number (eg: 1 --> 25 )
followed by testimony.
Use this choice if your ASCII file has line numbers.
HINT: Use the VIEW option to look at your ASCII file to see
if it has line numbers or not.
2 - ASCII HAS NO LINE NUMBERS: Most CANADIAN ASCII transcripts
have no line numbers, only numbered questions.
Use this choice if your ASCII does not have line numbers.
This option can also be used to index non-transcripts, such
as books, articles, or any other kind of plain ASCII file.

PRESS: BACKSPACE to delete 1 character LEFT.

TYPE a sentence you wish to appear at the bottom of the page.
Normally your FIRM NAME will be placed here.

===== Court Reporter INDEX setting NUMBER of COPIES ====
PRESS: BACKSPACE to delete the number currently showing.
ENTER the NUMBER OF COPIES (1-99) you wish to print.
* HELP WINDOW 33
===== Court Reporter INDEX setting the STARTING PAGE NUMBER ====
PRESS: BACKSPACE to delete the number currently showing.
The indexing program will normally think that the first page in the
transcript is PAGE 1.
If this is NOT the case, as in 2nd day proceedings, where the first
page is 212 (for example) you may enter that number here.
If there are THREE un-numbered pages (for example) before page ONE
in the transcript, you may type a NEGATIVE NUMBER ( -3 in this case )
to re-align the index page numbers with the actual transcript page
numbers.
NOTE: This program cannot "parse" the proper page number from the
transcript because there are too many variaitons on page numbering
formats in use, and the program would usually make mistakes.
* HELP WINDOW 34
===== Court Reporter INDEX setting NUMBER of LINES per PAGE ====
The program needs to know how many ASCII LINES are in each page.
DON'T simply type 25 and expect that number to be correct.
Remember, this is TOTAL LINES per page, where HEADERS, FOOTERS,
page numbers and BLANK lines are also included.
Use the VIEW option, then look at the RED LINE NUMBES down the
left side of the VIEW SCREEN to determine exactly how many lines
are in each page.
NOTE: If you ASCII FILE contains PAGE BREAKS, you must tell the
index program to use the embedded page breaks.
* HELP WINDOW 35
===== TYPING TEXT =====
[ESC] = Quit back to the main menu.
[ENTER] = Accept line as it is now.
[HOME] = Move cursor to start of line.
[END] = Move cursor to end of line.
[CNTRL Y] = Erase just this line.
* HELP WINDOW 36
===== WORD COUNT MAXIMUM LIMIT ====
If you enter ZERO, the word count maximum limit is turned off.
Words may appear thousands of times without being excluded.
If you enter another number, say 50, then any word which appears
50 times or more will be excluded automatically from the index.
This is a handy way to eliminate words which occur so many times
that looking them up would be useless.
