  5.         CHEAPERMAIL BASICS
  6.  
  7. TO INSTALL E-MAIL ONTO YOUR NETWORK FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  8.     Create a mailbox dir on your network's shared drive.  F:\mailbox is recommended.  Xcopy
  9. mail1.exe, mail1.ini, and users.mal to this dir.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL MAIL USERS HAVE
  10. AT LEAST READ ACCESS TO THIS DIRECTORY.
  11.     Edit the mail1.ini file.  The first line should be a path that you wish to create on every
  12. users LOCAL PC.  I recommend C:\mailbox.  The second line should be the shared drive
  13. location.  This is usually F:\mailbox, as described above.
  14.  
  15. TO INSTALL CHEAPERMAIL ONTO A PC ON YOUR NETWORK (for the first time only):
  16.     If the file vbrun200.dll is not on this PC, then Xcopy this file to your windows system dir.
  17. From windows, Click File in Program manager.  Under File, click Run.  In the Run textbox, type
  18. F:\mailbox\mail1.  Please click OK at this point.  CheaperMail will prompt for your name (as a new
  19. user), and will install e-mail into the MAIL group under Program Manager.  If you are running
  20. Windows 3.1 or later, please move the mail icon into your STARTUP group.  CheaperMail
  21. will add your name to the list of possible destinations that can receive messages.
  22.  
  23. TO USE CHEAPERMAIL:
  24.     The minimized icon will raise its flag when you have received a message.  If you have a
  25. PC speaker driver, or a sound card, you will hear a TaDa wave file the first time that you have a
  26. message placed into your empty mailbox.  If you restore the mail icon, your message will be
  27. displayed on the CheaperMail form.  If you delete this message ([name].mal), the flag will lower
  28. itself (on the minimized icon).
  29.     To send a message, place it into the text box on the CheaperMail form.  You may type a
  30. message in directly, or you may go through the Clipboard from another application.  Click one or
  31. more destinations from the list box, then click Send.  Hit Escape to minimize the program.  This
  32. will get it out of your way and still let it check for inbound mail.

  34. *     If you wish to change the sound that CheaperMail makes when you first get mail, edit the
  35. mail.ini file in your LOCAL mailbox directory.  Change TADA.WAV to your wave file.

  46. TECH NOTES:
  47. This program has been tested only under windows 3.1, on clones and PS/2'S, under DOS 5
  48. though 6.1, on NOVELL (r) 3.11 networks.  To test for PC compatibility, simply create the shared dir
  49. on your PC, edit the shared (pretend) mail1.ini, then run two copies of MAIL1.exe.  Change the
  50. user id of either version, and send the old user id a message.  This program should run on any
  51. network that has a common drive name. For example, if every user sees the same shared D:
  52. drive, it should work fine.  Each PC must be able to have a common local DIR.  For example, if
  53. every PC has a C: drive, it should work fine.
  54.     If you have a new person on an old PC (maybe Joe got a better job, and Sally now sits at
  55. Joe's old PC), then edit the local C:\mailbox\mail.ini and change JOE to SALLY (case is not
  56. important).  Now edit the shared network file (usually in f:\mailbox) mail1.ini.  Again, change JOE
  57. to SALLY.
  58.     This program checks for mail every five seconds, if you need a different speed, I will
  59. send you a new mail1.exe.  I will also give you on-screen credit for any of your suggestions
  60. for this program that I incorporate.  If you like to do contract windows programming, please
  61. send me some example code and a resume.  In the mean time, watch for my articles on
  62. distributed OLE 2 processing in your favorite windows magazines.
