~cMatthew 5:10-12~N ~r~KBlessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness'
sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile
you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on
my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in is great in heaven,
for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you~N.~k
Jesus anticipated the persecution his followers would face for their
faith in him (|1Peter 3:14-17|). He knew well that the man who in a pagan,
worldly, materialistic society exercised a life of faith in him would surely
have to face scorn and persecution. ~W~IIt may be a commentary on the depth of
contemporary "faith" that the majority of Christians sense little persection

or pressure on them from non-faith elements~N.
Persecution or abuse as such is not a blessing, but the blessing comes
for Christians in their ~W~Isuffering for Christ~N (|Phillipians 1:29|). The
blessedness holds only when one suffers in the service of Christ and right-
eousness and when the charges of evil doing are false.
One may be opposed because he is wrong, wicked, or simply a disturber.
For those who, like the prophets (|2 Chronicles 24:21|;|36:15|;
|Jeremiah 2:30|;|26:20-23|;|1 Kings 18:4|;|19:10,14|), suffer for truth and
right, there is reward in heaven.

There is no assurance of vindication or reward among people now. The
reward ~R~I~Fbelongs with certainty to the future~N, but even now as seen in heaven,
those who thus suffer are in a blessed condition. The assurance belongs to
those who suffer for what must ultimately prevail.
