Matthew 5:4 ~r~Kblessed are those who mourn, for they shall find consolation.~N~k
This sorrow or mourning is a ~M~Igrief that is manifested; one that is too
deep for concealment~N. This mourning may be the grief that follow's the
realization of spiritual poverty. Abingdon says that this beatitude could be
paraphrased ~C~I"Oh the happiness of those who are pecularily sensitive to sin in
themselves and in society, and who feel deeply all the distress caused by the
greed and covetousness, the selfish ambitions and cruelty of men.~N"

But we humans also mourn in the midst of experiences of life such as pain,
lonliness, death of a loved one, loss of meaning or of a cherished material
posession. ~W~IIn some strange way often we find the comfort of God in the midst of
all our mourning~N. Nevertheless, at the judgement the follower of Christ will
find comfort whether it is over our sins or over the hardships of life. Christ
died for all our sins. When this life is over its hardships for us will also
be over. ~G~IThus, we are comforted by Christ in life and in death.~N

This verse can also be tied to verse 3. We often mourn in the present
state of affirs in life. God has given us this life and is with us in the midst
of all of life's blessings and sorrows. In this we long for the coming ~wKingdom
of God~N promised in verse 3. God will comfort us by establishing his kingdom.

~rAbingdon commentary says that this verse could be paraphrased,~N ~c~K"Oh
the happiness of those who are pecularily sensitive to sin in themselves and
in society, and who feel deeply all the distress caused by the greed and
covetousness, the selfish ambitions of men."~N~k Ab.961
The Greek word ~gcomfort~N means ~g~F"to call to the side of~N." Jesus comforts men
by bringing them through his gospel to the presence of a God of compassion
amd a friend of sinners, and into the kingdom who foundation are justice and
truth, and to a life that is ~w~Feternal. ~N

Fox says that mourning and sorrow is not in itself a good thing. You and
I already know that through experience. Jesus wants better for us. He says,
~R~I~K"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundently~N.~k Sometimes, it seems that we will not bother to learn the Truth
of God until driven so by mourning and sorrow. It is partially in this sense
that this beatitude can be interpreted.
