Area Manager v4.0
(C) Copyright 1994, Dykstra Software
written by Bill Dykstra
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
AreaMGR, short for Area Manager, is a RemoteAccess 2.0x area management
utility. AreaMGR will allow you to make global changes to just about all
of the message area and file area settings, including security levels and
flag settings!
AreaMGR is another quality freeware product from Dykstra Software.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
AreaMGR is designed for making global changes to file and message areas.
AreaMGR allows you to make changes to ALL of the area settings!
The AreaMGR screens look very similar to the RACONFIG file and message area
screens, so you should have no problems figuring them out.
AreaMGR looks for the following files in the CURRENT directory:
CONFIG.RA
FILES.RA
MESSAGES.RA
AreaMGR must be able to find these files in the current directory in order
for the program to work.
When you first run AreaMGR, you will be presented with a menu that simply
allows you to select "Message Areas" or "File Areas". Choose whichever
area type you want to make changes to.
Depending on your selection, a file or message area settings screen will
be displayed. These screens are almost identical to RA's RACONFIG screens.
With these screens you can make changes to any of the fields available.
There are several type of fields available: Simple data entry fields, where
you can type in a value (like area Name, Security levels, etc). Just type
in whatever value you wish in these fields.
Numeric fields have maximum values of either 255 or 65535, depending on which
field you are on. If you enter a number higher than either of these maximums
the field will automatically be adjusted to the maximum value. (For example,
if you enter 900 into the "Age" field, AreaMGR will automatically adjust
this value to 255 when you press ENTER...)
Many fields are "toggle" fields, where there are a limited number of values
allowed in these fields. Use the space bar to cycle through the available
values for these fields.
AreaMGR is a SMART program. Even though all the fields are available and
may be changed, AreaMGR will only change the values of the fields that you
have placed a new value in. If you leave a field blank, NO CHANGE will be
made to that field. If you enter a new value in a field, that value will
be placed in all the areas that you process. If you don't want to change
a field, make sure that it is blank! Note that in numeric fields, the value
ZERO (0) is NOT considered blank! If you enter a 0 into a field, then
AreaMGR will place a 0 into that field in all areas that you process. If
you do not want to make changes to a numeric field, leave it blank, NOT 0!
The flags are the only fields that may be confusing. The flags work as
follows:
- any flag that is left with a '.' (period) value will NOT be changed.
- any flag that you set to a '-' (dash) value will be cleared in the
areas that you process. (A cleared flag shows up as a dash (-) in
RACONFIG.
- any flag that you set to an 'X' will be set ON in the areas that you
process. (These will appear as X's in RACONFIG)
- any flag that you set to an 'O' will be set OFF in the areas that you
process. This does NOT mean that the flag will be cleared! It will be
set OFF. This is how you can update the NOT flags. (These will appear
as O's in RACONFIG)
For example, if you want to clear the Read flag A4, set read flag B2 OFF, and
set the read flag C6 to ON, your Read flag fields should look like this:
A flag: ...-....
B flag: .O......
C flag: .....X..
D flag: ........
This would make the appropriate changes to the three specified flags, while
all other flags would remain UNCHANGED.
NOTE: When selecting Archive Types (File areas) or the AKA address (message
areas), a popup list box will appear, from which you can make a selection.
These AKA's and archive types are read from CONFIG.RA. To modify the data
that appears in these popup list boxes, you must modify the settings in
RACONFIG.
If you do NOT want to make changes to one of these two fields, select the
"DO NOT CHANGE" option from the popup list box. Selecting a blank row will
NOT have the same result.
Search and Replace
──────────────────
Version 4.0 now supports "Search & Replace" on certain fields.
In message areas, you may now use the Search & Replace feature on the
Area Name, Origin Line, and JAM Base Name fields. In file areas you may
use this option on the Area Name and File Path fields.
This new Search & Replace feature allows you to replace only specific
text with new text, which is very handy when changing things like a drive
letter in a file path.
For example: If all of your file areas are on drive D:, but you then
buy a new hard drive, and you move your file areas to drive E:, you must
now update your paths in the RA file areas. This Search & Replace option
is perfect for this: Just search for "D:" and replace it with "E:". If
AreaMGR finds "D:" in the path, it will replace it with "E:", and it will
leave the rest of the path unchanged.
(For example, "D:\RA\FILE\NEWFILES" would become "E:\RA\FILE\NEWFILES")
NOTE: AreaMGR will only find and replace the FIRST occurrence of a string
in each field. For example, if you search for "RA" and replace it with
"RAPRO" in following, only the first "RA" will be changed.
"D:\RA\FILE\RA_FILES" will become "D:\RAPRO\FILE\RA_FILES". Only the first
"RA" is changed, so it does NOT become "D:\RAPRO\FILE\RAPRO_FILES".
NOTE: The "search" is NOT case sensitive! If you search for "ra", and "RA"
is found, it will be considered a match. The "Replace" text IS case
sensitive - it will be written to the field exactly how you typed it.
(Example: Search for: ra
Replace with: TEsT
Old field found: RA File Area
New field value: TEsT File Area
The "RA" is replaced with "TEsT".)
Ready to process your changes?
─────────────────────────────
When you have entered all of the values that you want changed, you may
press F10 to begin processing these changes.
To exit the screen without processing your changes, press ESC.
To exit the screen and begin processing the changes, press F10.
When you press F10, you will be asked to select the areas that you want to
change. You may either change a RANGE of areas (from a starting area number
to an ending area number) or you may change any number of individually
selected areas.
You will be asked to enter the starting and ending area numbers. The
starting and ending area numbers that you enter WILL also be processed.
For example, if you enter a starting area number of 4, and an ending area
number of 7, areas 4, 5, 6, and 7 will be updated. (They are INCLUSIVE).
If you wish to select individual areas for processing, rather than using
a range of areas, press F2 instead of entering the Starting area number.
A pop up list of all available areas will be displayed, and you may then tag
any areas that you want to change from this list.
Keys available when tagging:
F1 = Help
F10 = Process
ESC = Cancel
ENTER = Toggle tagged status and move down one row
SPACE = Toggle tagged status and remain on this row
+ = Tag this area and move down one row
- = UnTag this area and move down one row
F5 = Tag ALL areas
F6 = UnTag ALL areas
Any tagged areas will have a check mark (√) displayed to the right of the
area name. The following is a sample of the area selection box:
╔═══════════[ Tag the areas to be updated ]════════════╗

In the above example, areas 2,3,4,7,9 and 10 are tagged. If you press F10
at this point, these areas would be processed.
NOTE: If you enter a value in the JAM area name field (when changing message
areas) this value will ONLY be stored in your message area settings if the
area being updated is a JAM area. If the area being updated is a HUDSON
area, the JAM area name will NOT be updated. (This can be handy for making
global changes to your JAM area names if you ever need to do this, because
it will skip over the HUDSON areas without updating the JAM name for those
areas.)
────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Well, that's about all I have to say. Hopefully you can understand how
this works. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, suggestions,
or if you find any bugs.
I know, these docs really suck. Sigh. This program is pretty straight
forward, so you should be able to figure it out... after all, you must
have figured out RACONFIG by now, and its pretty much the same.
If somebody really gets bored they could always rewrite these for me... :)
Enjoy!

There is none! This is freeware!
I'd love to hear from you - netmail, Internet e-mail, whatever! Even better,
to show your appreciation (assuming you like the program <smirk>) send me
a postcard... preferrably of your city! (I like to see the places where my
stuff gets used).
