  7. --  If 4F is configured to use LCD for changing directories and a CD operation
  8.     fails, you will now be prompted to have LCD rescan the directory tree.
  9.     The LCD utility port has a "/SCAN" entry.  You may make this "/SCAN DC"
  10.     if you want to scan only hard drives D and C.  Unfortunately, this rescan
  11.     function is not available for ACD; ACD displays a directory tree to choose
  12.     a directory from rather than reporting an error in ERRORLEVEL.
  13.  
  14. --  As soon as a CD operation starts, the 4F listing and count of files and
  15.     bytes are now cleared -- only the current directory shows on in the 4FILES
  16.     screen framework until the new directory has been loaded.  For large
  17.     directories or slow networks, this makes it clear that something is
  18.     happening during the CD.
  19.  
  20. --  On upward CD's from a subdirectory named AAA.002, if there is a
  21.     subdirectory in the parent named AAA.001, .001 rather than .002 became
  22.     the current record in the parent.  Fixed.
  23.  
  24. --  Copying to ".." was not working.  Also, for copying to an existing directory
  25.     named ..\..\AAA, the directory was not being found to exist.  Both fixed.
  26.  
  27. --  Detection of write protected disks was disabled due to a conflict with a
  28.     genuine bug in DOS, encountered with a change in v-3.15.  4F now works
  29.     around the bug.
  30.  
  31. --  The (K)ill directory command no longer rereads the directory when finished.
  32.  
  33.  
  34. V-3.15:
  35. =======
  36.  
  37. --  Configuration switch added to determine whether or not you will be prompted
  38.     for each file when copying or moving marked files (has no effect if running
  39.     under COMMAND.COM).
  40.  
  41. --  Failure to create new directory during copy using the ".." directory name
  42.     has been corrected.
  43.  
  44. --  Switching or restoring (after calling a utility) the number of screen rows
  45.     has been improved.
  46.  
  47. --  Fixed problem with branded-as-registered copies losing their brands (on an
  48.     infrequent basis).
  49.  
  50.  
  51. V-3.13 Fixes:
  52. =============
  53.  
  54. --  If the video mode was changed in a utility called from within 4FILES,
  55.     upon returning to 4FILES garbage was displayed after the video mode was
  56.     restored.  Fixed.
  57.  
  58. --  The Shft-DEL and Shft-INS keys are once again functional.
  59.  
  60.  
  61. V-3.12 Fixes:
  62. =============
  63.  
  64. --  Restoration of the original DOS screen failed if the TEMP directory
  65.     was a subdirectory rather than a root directory.  Fixed.
  66.  
  67. --  An error in at least one type of AMI BIOS chip caused keystrokes for
  68.     yes/no prompts to be lost before being acted on, putting the computer in an
  69.     endless loop.  One function on this BIOS trashes a register that should be
  70.     unaffected; 4FILES now restores the register after the BIOS call.
  71.  
  72. --  Instructions for Windows installation in 4F.DOC improved.
  73.  
  74.  
  75. V-3.11 Improvements
  76. ===================
  77.  
  78. VIDEO:
  79. ======
  80.  
  81. --  Video mode selection with Ctrl-F7 has been improved.  This includes
  82.     detection of ANSI if it is active, enabling use of compatible behavior.
  83.  
  84. --  The original text font can be restored if the controlling configuration
  85.     menu switch is set to 'Y,' but this does not work on some systems.  This is
  86.     essential if you use a utility that sets non-standard height characters
  87.     to get non-standard numbers of rows (e.g. 28 or 33), or if you have a font
  88.     that you like better than the fonts supplied in your video BIOS.
  89.  
  90. --  The original font table is stored to EMS, if available.
  91.  
  92. --  A bug sometimes affecting cursor location at exit has been fixed.  The
  93.     meanings of the configuration menu switches controlling behavior at exit
  94.     have been changed; you may to change some of the settings.

  97. DISK ACCESS:
  98. ============
  99.  
  100. --  For removable media drives running under DOS 4.0 or higher, 4FILES now
  101.     prompts before writing DESCRIPT.ION or DEMARCAT.ION if the disk has
  102.     been changed.
  103.  
  104. --  Handling of CD-ROM drives has been improved.
  105.  
  106. --  On write protected disks that are full and for which files are marked,
  107.     it was impossible to clear the "size overflow" message.  This has been
  108.     fixed.  Also, for write protected disks, file marks are now held in a
  109.     temporary file in your TEMP directory.

  112. TEXT MODE:
  113. ==========
  114.  
  115. --  Paste now takes into account the insert state rather than automatically
  116.     inserting text.
  117.  
  118. --  A Ctrl-U command has been added to undo an inadvertent paste or bad edit.
  119.  
  120. --  A paste problem that caused lock-ups has been fixed.

  123. FILE MANAGEMENT MODE:
  124. =====================
  125.  
  126. --  When creating an archive file, the current filename (shown by pressing
  127.     UpArrow) is now shown without an extension, eliminating some key strokes.
  128.  
  129. --  A problem in the archive file name history with shorter filenames not
  130.     fully overwriting previous longer names has been fixed.

  138. FROM WITHIN FILE MODE:

  141.   a)  "V" displays 'Volume Information,' including the free bytes
  142.   available on the current drive and an editable VOLUME LABEL field.
  143.  
  144.   b)  For Copy/Move/Zip operations, the target path input field is now
  145.   active first, then the filename input field.
  146.  
  147.   c)  During Copy/Move/Zip, the target drive is now checked for write
  148.   protection before the operation is attempted.

  151. FROM WITHIN NOTE MODE:
  152. ----------------------

  154.   a)  High ASCII symbols can now be generated with Alt-Keypad key combinations.
  155.  
  156.   b)  The "whole note copied" message is now cleared by the next keystroke.

  159. ADDITIONS TO CONFIGURATION MENUS:

  162.   There were several additions, and there are more in Version 3.11.  See
  163.   4F.DOC for V-3.11.

  166. OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS:

  169.   a)  During operations from write protected disks, including CDROMs, the
  170.   DEMARCAT.ION file (preserving file marks) and 0-4F-DOS.ERR error trapping
  171.   files are now written to your TEMP directory.  This avoids the two
  172.   warning messages used previously.
  173.  
  174.   A Ctrl-L command has been added to show the error trapping file via
  175.   your LIST utility.  The error file can be deleted while exiting LIST.
  176.  
  177.  
  178. VIDEO MODE CHANGES ON-THE-FLY:
  179. ------------------------------
  180.  
  181.   <Ctrl-F7> cycles through all available video modes, using either of two
  182.   methods.  See 4F.DOC for details.

  189. o  Marked files may now be copied, moved, renamed, and archived (to ZIP, ARJ
  190.    and LHA formats, with file descriptions included).

  192. o  History lists have been added for these input fields: filename, target
  193.    directory, directory change, and DOS command line.

  195. o  Many new keystroke commands have been added (see below).
  196.  
  197. o  A special keyboard configuration for laptop computers may now be selected.

  199. o  An internal routine has been added to brand shareware copies as registered.

  203. o  A DOS-order directory sort has been added to the 10 pre-existing sorts.

  208. TEMP Directory Recommended
  209. --------------------------
  210.     Note that for the marked file and archiving operations to work as fast as
  211. possible you should set up a tempory directory, named TEMP.  In
  212. AUTOEXEC.BAT you can put a statement like:  SET TEMP=d:\ where "d" is a
  213. RAMDISK or hard drive.  A directory may be included in the specification
  214. if desired.  A RAM disk is a perfect place for a TEMP directory.
  215.  
  216.  
  217. New Key Mappings
  218. ----------------
  219.     The keyboard may now be configured for a laptop computer via the
  220. configuration screen.  The <[>, <]> and <Enter> keys are substituted for
  221. <G*>, <G-> and <G+> respectively.  Settings for this switch are 1=AT, 2=PC and
  222. 3=laptop, as shown on-screen.  The "2" setting substitutes the <Scrl-Lk> key
  223. for <G*>.
  224.  
  225.     In File Mode only, <F9> now duplicates ^X (execute immediately).
  226.  
  227.  
  228. Changed & New Command Line Switches:
  229. ------------------------------------
  230.   /C(hrono) sort replaces /T(ime/date) sort.
  231.   /R(everse) sort replaces /D(escending) sort.
  232.   /U(nsorted) is a new switch, and gives the DOS sort order.
  233.  
  234.   The above changes were made to agree with useage in the new Re-sort Menu,
  235.   which has (U)nsorted added to it.
  236.  
  237.   /L  For use if 4F is called from a numeric-keypad intensive operation.
  238.       Keypad state is restored on exit from 4FILES.  This is a new switch,
  239.       required by changes in NumLock (see below).
  240.  
  241.   /M  Prevents marks in an old DEMARCAT.ION file from being ignored.
  242.  
  243.  
  244. New keystroke commands:
  245. -----------------------
  246.   ^C    Copy all marked files.
  247.   ^M    Move  "    "      "
  248.   ^R    Rename "   "      "

  250.    Z    Zip a single file with its file description.
  251.   ^Z    Zip all marked files with file descriptions.

  253.   @^Y   Delete file input or a file description from the cursor to the right.

  255.   New file marking keys, in addition to the old F5, F6, ^F5 and ^F6:
  256.   ------------------------------------------------------------------
  257.   <Space>         Toggle marked/unmarked for the current file.
  258.   <^SPACE>        Swap (toggle) the marks on all files.
  259.   <^/> and <^\>   These duplicate <^F5> & <^F6> file marking.

  261.   Other Keys
  262.   ----------
  263.   <NumLock>         Now has its normal, keypad-toggling function back.
  264.   <Shft><NumLock>   Toggles the display of file attributes and creation time.
  265.                     (This is what <NumLock> did in earlier versions.)
  266.  
  267.   ^D   IN TEXT ENTRY MODES:  Deletes the file descriptions for all marked
  268.        files (giving a prompt first of course).  In file mode this key deletes
  269.        marked files.  The prompts appear on different segments of the screen to
  270.        help distinguish the pending actions of the two senses of this key.

  272.  
  273.   ^H   IN FILE MODE: If 4DOS is active, shell to DOS and show the command
  274.        history window.
  275.  
  276.   ^H   IN TEXT ENTRY MODES:  Destructive backspace.
  277.  
  278.   ^W   Presents a DESCRIPT.ION Write Menu, with choices to (S)ave notes
  279.        immediately or (A)bandon all unsaved note edits.
  280.  
  281.   <Shft><ESC>   Alternate exit means in Windows and OS/2 since the preferred
  282.                <@ESC> and <^ESC> keys are appropriated by these systems.
  283.  
  284.   <^INS>       These three keys cut and paste text as they do in Windows ...
  285.   <$INS>       ... and are in addition to the preferred use of the F9 ...
  286.   <$DEL>       ... and F10 keys.
  287.  
  288.   Laptop keyboard switch -- see detailed description above.

  291. Directory List Sorting
  292. ----------------------
  293.     In the sorting menu, ascending or descending sorts are now selected with
  294. the UpArrow or DownArrow keys, rather than <G-> or <G+>.  (U)nsorted has been
  295. added.
