What is JareWare? The underlying principles at JareWare
----------------- are to create simple programs that
perform a specific task well, and to
produce high quality software that makes
life easier. Isn't that what computers
are supposed to do, anyway?
What is QuickCheck? QuickCheck is a companion product to
------------------- Quicken by Intuit. Though QuickCheck
was specifically tested with the latest
versions of Quicken (version 7 for DOS,
version 3 for Windows), QuickCheck
should work with earlier versions of
Quicken. QuickCheck enables the user to
print on virtually any type of check
with any type of printer. This software
is geared for the home or small business
user. QuickCheck can print on the
checks you now use; no special checks
are needed.
You'll Need To Know To use this program, you'll need to be
------------------- familiar with DOS, as well as your
printer. If you want to run QuickCheck
under Windows, you'll need to be
familiar with it as well.
What's Included The following files should be present.
--------------- If they're not, please contact the
service you received the files from, or
JareWare.
File Size Date
--------------- ------ --------------
QC.EXE 31,394 04-11-94 1:01a
QINSTALL.EXE 23,586 04-11-94 1:01a
QC.ICO 766 04-11-94 1:01a
QC.DOC 26,784 04-11-94 1:01a

Installing QuickCheck Installing QuickCheck is easy. Place
--------------------- the distribution files where you'd like
QuickCheck to reside. You may place
QuickCheck in the Quicken subdirectory.
Simply type qinstall at the DOS prompt
where the QuickCheck files are located.
Next, you'll be asked to enter your
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 1
name. You must enter at least seven
non-blank, unique characters. I
recommend using your full name. After
entering your name, the necessary files
will be installed. This will enable
your sixty day trial period. If you
like QuickCheck, you must register to
continue its use.
Example: Say the QuickCheck distribution files
were on your A: drive, and you wanted to
install QuickCheck on your hard drive in
a subdirectory called "QUIKCHEK" --
here's what you'd do:
Prompt Type
---------- -----------------
C:\> MD QUIKCHEK
C:\> CD QUIKCHEK
C:\QUIKCHECK> COPY A:*.* C:
C:\QUIKCHECK> QINTSALL
Setting Up QuickCheck QuickCheck relies on an initialization
--------------------- file, QC.INI, to operate. This is a
text file which may be altered by using
any text editor like DOS' edit. QC.INI
must reside where the QuickCheck
(QC.EXE) program does. We'll review
each entry of the file.
Input_File= This line tells QuickCheck where the
input file (the QIF file) is.
Example: Input_File =c:\quickenw\qc.qif
In this example, the file QuickCheck
will use resides in the quickenw sub
directory. The file is called qc.qif.
Output_File= This line tells QuickCheck where to
write the checks to. To print directly
to your printer (recommended), set this
value to LPT1. You may however print to
a file by specifying a valid DOS file
name.
Example: Output_File =LPT1
QuickCheck will print directly to the
printer in this example.
Printer_Init= This is the set up command sent to the
printer (or file) before checks are
printed. Refer to your printer manual
for the printer codes required.
Entering a caret (^) causes QuickCheck
to generate the ESCAPE character.
Example: Printer_Init=^&l10^&l2H
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 2
At first glance, this may look cryptic.
I have an OKIDATA OL400 laser printer,
and need to tell my printer that I want
to print in landscape mode. I also want
the printer to use manual feed. "^&l10"
is the escape sequence to print in
landscape mode. "^l2H" is the escape
sequence to select manual feed. Refer
to your printer manual for the right
codes for your printer. If you're using
a dot matrix printer, you may not even
need a printer initialization string.
Simply leave this option blank if that's
the case.
Printer_Reset= This is the set up command sent to the
printer (or file) after all checks are
printed. Refer to your printer manual
for the printer codes required.
Entering a caret (^) causes QuickCheck
to generate the ESCAPE character.
Example: Printer_Reset=^E
This command resets the landscape mode
and manual request mode set in the
Printer_Init line above. It is
important to reset your printer.
Check_Layout= This line determines what and where
QuickCheck will print on your checks.
Here's a list of codes supported. They
are case-sensitive. Separate
each code by one or more spaces.
F produces a form feed. You typically
want to place this at the end of your
Check_Layout definition to eject the
check from your printer.
S# produces spaces. Replace the number
sign (#) by the number of spaces you
want QuickCheck to print.
L# prints line feeds. Replace the number
sign (#) by the number of lines you
want QuickCheck to print.
T# indicates the left margin, or tab.
Replace the number sign (#) by the
number of spaces you want QuickCheck
to tab to.
n prints the check number. It occupies
eight spaces.
d prints the check date. It is in
the format MM/DD/YY and occupies
eight spaces.
D prints the check date in the
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 3
format:
Mon. DD YY. It occupies 12 spaces.
p prints the payee of the check. It
occupies thirty-two spaces.
m prints the check memo. It occupies
thirty-two spaces.
t print the transaction amount of the
check. It is in the format 9,999.99
and occupies eight spaces.
a prints the spelled out amount. It
occupies 55 spaces.
Example:
Check_Layout=T53 L20 S33 d L2 S5 p S7 t L2 a L4 S2 m F
This tells QuickCheck that I want my
left margin set at column 53. Then, I
want to go down 20 lines. Next, go over
33 spaces and print the check date.
Then, go down 2 lines. Go over 5 spaces
and print the check payee (which will
take up 32 spaces). Go over 7 more
spaces and print the transaction amount.
Advance 2 lines and print the spelled
out amount. Advance 4 lines, space over
2 spaces and print the memo. Finally,
do a form feed to eject the check.
Reg_Name= This line should contain your name.
Once QuickCheck is installed, you should
not change it.
Reg_Number= This is your registration number. Once
QuickCheck is installed, you should not
change it. However, when you become a
registered user, you'll receive a new
registration number.
Using QuickCheck QuickCheck uses information from a
---------------- special file you create from Quicken,
called a QIF file. To print checks with
QuickCheck, you must first create this
file with Quicken. From within Quicken,
select File, Export. Select the file
for Quicken to export to. This file
must match the Input_File in
QuickCheck's initialization file. Use
the same file name each time. Next,
select the date range of the checks
you'd like to print. Tell Quicken to
export these transactions. Refer to
your Quicken manual for more detail in
creating this file.
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 4
You may now exit Quicken and start
QuickCheck. QuickCheck will display
each check number it finds and ask you
if you'd like to print the check.

Printing Checks Printing checks with QuickCheck is easy.
--------------- After you've set up the Check_Layout
line for your check, you're all set.
The Check_Layout that QuickCheck
installs with produces the following
results:
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

└──────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Use this as a base for customizing the
Check_Layout for your specific check.
Most printers typically print ten
characters per inch, and 6 lines per
inch. Use this as a guide in
determining your Check_Layout.
Hint: To avoid wasting a lot of checks as you
experiment with the Check_Layout, cut
blank sheets of paper the size of your
checks. You can then overlay
them onto a check to see if everything
is printing in the correct location.
Another Hint: Although printers generally default to
printing 10 characters per inch and 6
line per inch, you may change this in
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 5
the Printer_Init line if your printer
supports this.
If you're using a laser printer, feed
the check into it as you would an
envelope. Since most standard wallet
size checks are slightly smaller than
what your envelope guides adjust to,
line the check up along the right edge
guide. Also, check your printer manual
to ensure that it can accept the check.
LaserJet III's won't accept anything
smaller than 7 1/2".
Guides are available for $5.00 which
will assist in feeding narrow checks in
laser printers. These guides will not
overcome the LaserJet III's length
restriction, but will allow narrower
documents to be inserted on most laser
printers. Please see the order form to
order them.
If you're using a dot matrix printer, it
should support friction feed. Place the
printer in this setting, and feed the
check into the printer as you would a
single sheet of paper. Because of the
size of the traditional wallet check, it
may be difficult to load the check into
the printer. However, you may purchase
tractor feed checks from any source,
since you can tell QuickCheck what to
print, and where.
Limitations The only limitation in this version of
----------- QuickCheck is that it will not generate
checks for amounts exceeding $9,999.99.
If you write checks larger than this
amount, I would strongly encourage you
to register! This limitation may be
removed if enough users request it.
Windows Usage Though QuickCheck is a DOS program, it
------------- may be run from within Windows. Please
refer to your Windows documentation for
detailed help in accomplishing this. An
icon for QuickCheck has been included
for your use. It should be in the
directory where QuickCheck resides, and
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 6
is called QC.ICO.
Since the initialization file for
QuickCheck is called QC.INI, you may
simply double-click on it within File
Manager to edit it. You may also use
the Notepad in the Accessories Group to
edit it.

If you're a registered user, contact
JareWare for your registration
information if you misplaced it.
Why Register? Copyright laws apply to both Shareware
------------- and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights.
Shareware is a distribution method, not
a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and
pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the
overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back
guarantee --if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
QuickCheck is a "shareware program"
and is provided at no charge to the user
for evaluation. Feel free to share it
with your friends, but please do not
give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-
supported" software is to provide
personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to
provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If
you find this program useful and find
that you are using QuickCheck and
continue to use QuickCheck after a
reasonable trial period, you must make a
registration payment to JareWare. The
------------------------------------------------------------------
QuickCheck ver 1.01 (c) 1994 JareWare Page: 8
registration fee will license one copy
for use on any one computer at any one
time. You must treat this software just
like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of
people and may be freely moved from one
computer location to another, so long as
there is no possibility of it being used
at one location while it's being used at
another. Just as a book cannot be read
by two different persons at the same
time.
Commercial users of QuickCheck must
register and pay for their copies of
QuickCheck within 60 days of first use
or their license is withdrawn. Anyone
distributing QuickCheck for any kind of
remuneration must first contact JareWare
at the address listed for authorization.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of
QuickCheck along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to
register their copy if they find that
they can use it. By registering
QuickCheck, you'll receive the next
release of QuickCheck free, plus a
professional version of the manual. The
software will stop working when the
trial period expires. This is to
encourage you to register. I recommend
registering as soon as possible so that
you'll be able to use QuickCheck without
interruption.
Warranty Users of QuickCheck must accept this
