  17. Please read this file *carefully* before installing or
  18. attempting to use WinNET Mail.  Getting WinNET set up on
  19. your system is quite straight-forward, but if you don't
  20. read this file before getting started, you will overlook
  21. important information necessary for proper operation of
  22. the software.

  33. WinNET Mail (TM) is a Windows 3.0/3.1 application for
  34. sending and receiving Electronic Mail and News articles with
  35. the world-wide Internet and Usenet networks using just your
  36. Windows system and a modem.  The connection with the
  37. Internet and Usenet is provided through Computer
  38. Witchcraft's computer system providing WinNET (SM)
  39. service.

  41. COSTS OF USING WinNET MAIL
  42.  
  43. The WinNET Mail software is provided to you free of charge
  44. for the purpose of connecting with the WinNET system.  The
  45. WinNET system is your connection with the Internet and Usenet
  46. networks and usage is billed to you on a connect time
  47. basis.
  48.  
  49. The rate for on-line usage of the WinNET system is:
  50.  
  51.             $8.00 per hour.
  52.  
  53. There is a monthly minimum charge of $9.95 while you 
  54. have an account with us.  This means that if you use less than 
  55. $9.95 worth of connect time (billed at $8.00 per hour), you 
  56. will be billed the minimum of $9.95.
  57.  
  58. There is a per account minimum charge of $9.95.  Accounts
  59. created and then ended shortly thereafter will be billed at
  60. minimum $9.95.
  61.  
  62. Unlike many on-line services and bulletin boards, you are
  63. only connected to WinNET for just long enough to send or
  64. receive any pending E-Mail at speeds as fast as your modem
  65. will go.  This results in connection times of typically 1 to
  66. just a few minutes.  In our experience, customers average
  67. 1.25 hours of connect time per month or just $10.00 in
  68. charges. See TERMS.TXT for full details.

  70. 1-800 Number Service
  71.  
  72. Computer Witchcraft also offers a very economical 1-800 number
  73. service that can be used to access us.  This is *optional* --
  74. it is fine to call our direct number if your location is
  75. local to ours, or if you have a calling plan with your long
  76. distance company that provides a savings.  Our rates for
  77. 1-800 number service are: 
  78.  
  79.         M-F, 8am-5pm:           18 cents/min
  80.         All other times:        12 cents/min
  81.  
  82. SETTING UP WinNET MAIL ON YOUR SYSTEM
  83.  
  84. Following are instructions for setting up WinNET Mail on
  85. your system.
  86.  
  87. STEP 1.  If you received WinNET from CompuServe or some
  88. other electronic bulletin board, create a temporary
  89. directory and copy the wnmail.zip file to this directory. 
  90. Run the pkunzip prgram (commonly available shareware from
  91. PKWARE) to unzip the wnmail.zip file in this directory. 
  92.  
  93. STEP 2.  From the Windows program manager File menu, or
  94. directly from the Window's File Manage program, Run the
  95. SETUP.EXE program supplied with the WinNET distribution.
  96. Use the More Information button to get more information on
  97. each screen.
  98.  
  99. STEP 3.  Run the CWI Account Setup program (ACCOUNT.EXE).
  100. This will ask you for billing and credit card information.
  101. The program will call the Computer Witchcraft WinNET server
  102. and submit your account request.  After a one minute
  103. pause, the program will call back to verify that the
  104. account was accepted.
  105.  
  106. All account requests will be accepted unless the System
  107. Name that you choose under SETUP is already taken by
  108. another WinNET customer.  If the account request is not
  109. successful, you will need to re-run SETUP, select a different
  110. System Name, and re-run the account program.
  111.  
  112.  
  113. UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION OF WINNET
  114.  
  115. The instructions for upgrading a previous version of WinNET
  116. are basically the same as outlined in the above steps
  117. describing a new installation.  Make sure that you put the
  118. distribution .zip file wnmail.zip in a *temporary*
  119. directory before you start (NOT the directory that
  120. currently contains WinNET) and run setup from this
  121. temporary directory.  When you are asked to specify the
  122. directory where WinNET should be installed, specify the
  123. same directory where your old copy of WinNET was
  124. installed.  This will cause the setup program to overwrite
  125. the old WinNET files with the files from the new version.
  126. Your old setup parameters will be detected and appear as
  127. the defaults in the setup process.

  129. Also, if you are upgrading from a version of WinNET that
  130. did not support WinNET News (version 1.03 or earlier),
  131. please see the section above, (STEP 3 of "Setting up WinNET
  132. on your System"), that describes the setting of the WinNET
  133. WNMTZ environment variable.  This is VERY IMPORTANT for the
  134. proper operation of this version of the software.

  136. PROBLEMS WITH WinNET SETUP
  137.  
  138. The most likely source of problems that you may have with
  139. WinNET Mail is the SETUP Communications Parameters:
  140.  
  141.     1.  Make sure that the COM port is set to the port that
  142.         your modem uses. 
  143.  
  144.     2.  Make sure that the interface speed it not set faster
  145.         than your modem can handle.
  146.  
  147.     3.  Verify that the telephone number being dialed will
  148.         work correctly from your facility and area. 
  149.  
  150.         The telephone number of the WinNET server is:
  151.  
  152.                 (502) 589-4131
  153.  
  154.         Which is located in Louisville Kentucky,
  155.         U.S.A.  If you are local to Louisville, use
  156.         simply 589-4131.  You may also need to add digits
  157.         to obtain an outside line or for credit card
  158.         dialing. 
  159.  
  160. You can verify that these settings work for your system by
  161. using the Windows Terminal program.  You can also check that
  162. the modem strings supplied on the Communications Parameters
  163. screen work with you modem as well.

  175. That said, we very much encourage distribution of this
  176. product, under the following conditions:

  178. 1.  Any person serving as a distributor of WinNET Mail (TM)
  179.     must retain exactly the original form of the    
  180.     Computer Witchcraft, Inc., distribution by including
  181.     ALL files in unmodified condition.

  197. 2.  Owners or operators of Electronic Bulletin Boards
  198.     (EBB's), such as CompuServe, may acquire or accept, and
  199.     then distribute copies of WinNET Mail (TM) through 
  200.     their EBB service, subject to the conditions above, and
  201.     may further do so in the context of charging subscribers
  202.     to their services a general fee for belonging to the
  203.     membership of the service, and/or for time on-line, as
  204.     long as these charges are not specifically related to
  205.     overt sale of the WinNET Mail (TM) product.  This should
  206.     in no way be construed as relinquishment, by Computer
  207.     Witchcraft, Inc., of its copyright protection and sole
  208.     ownership of WinNET Mail (TM). 
  209.  
  210. 3.  Persons wishing to contact Computer Witchcraft, Inc.,
  211.     for the purpose of negotiating limited distribution
  212.     rights for WinNET Mail (TM) should review the file
  213.     VENDOR.TXT, included with this distribution, which
  214.     contains an application form that distributors may use
  215.     to initiate the process. 
  216.  
  217. 4.  Any persons possessing a bona fide copy of WinNET Mail
  218.     (TM) as originally distributed by Computer
  219.     Witchcraft, Inc., may freely copy and distribute the
  220.     product to whomever they like, as long as exactly the
  221.     original form of the distribution is retained, by
  222.     including ALL files, in unmodified condition, 
  223.     especially but not limited to all documentation files,
  224.     as long as they assess no fees beyond those required for
  225.     materials needed in distributing the product, i.e.,
  226.     matching exactly the cost of floppy disks, mailing
  227.     materials and costs, or long-distance phone charges
  228.     relevant to electronic distribution. 
  229.   
  230. 5.  With the exceptions of EBB operators, under the
  231.     conditions described above, and that of persons entering
  232.     into written contractual distribution agreements with
  233.     Computer Witchcraft, Inc., other persons engaged in the
  234.     distribution of software for profit ARE EXPLICITLY    
  235.     PROHIBITED from marketing or selling, in any form, any
  236.     files or parts of files, or modified versions of files,
  237.     that are part of Computer Witchcraft's distribution.

  239. 6.  Developers of software products who incorporate ANY
  240.     portion of the binary portions of the author's product,
  241.     or who copy features or aspects of the user-interface of
  242.     the product subject to protection by the laws of 
  243.     copyright, SHALL BE PROSECUTED, unless they have the  
  244.     express, written permission of Computer Witchcraft,
  245.     Inc., to do so.
