  4.   The following Thai words are used in this booklet:

  6.         //Thudong//,  (pronounce `toodong', from the Pali, 
  7.              //dhutanga//, -- Austere Practices) -- the wandering, 
  8.              ascetical, solitary and meditative life of some bhikkhus.
  9.         
  10.         //Crot//, an umbrella with an attachable mosquito net.
  11.         
  12.         //Nain//, (from Pali, //samanera//), a novice of under 20 years 
  13.              old undertaking to observe 10 Precepts.
  14.         
  15.         
  16.   A few Pali words are used occasionally:

  18.         //Bhikkhu//, a fully ordained member of the Sangha over the age 
  19.              of 20, training himself in the observance of the 
  20.              Patimokkha, that is, the monastic Code of Discipline. 
  21.              Nearest English translation of `bhikkhu' is `monk' -- 
  22.              never `priest'!
  23.         
  24.         //Sangha//, the community or order of bhikkhus open to people 
  25.              of all races who desire to lead the holy life in the 
  26.              Dispensation of the Buddha.
  27.         
  28.         //Vihara//, The Buddhist equivalent of a `monastery' (i.e., 
  29.              where bhikkhus live), but this English word conjures up so 
  30.              many misleading ideas that the Buddhist term `vihara' has 
  31.              been preferred throughout.
  32.         
  33.         //Puja//, veneration, worship.  In Buddhist practice this is 
  34.              done with the idea of increasing the skilful qualities 
  35.              (such as wisdom and devotion) in one's own mind. 
  36.              Propitiation of forces outside oneself (Gods, etc.), is 
  37.              quite foreign to Buddhadhamma.

  39.         //Kamma//, intentional action, or willed, volitional action. 
  40.              (In Buddhism, //never// the result of action.)
