  11. She looked into his golden eyes
  12. where once there had been fire, laughter and desire,
  13. and as she looked deeper,
  14. under the surface of once was,
  15. the fire changed to sadness
  16. the laughter to tears
  17. and the desire to loneliness.
  18.  
  19. She wondered why the things that were had come to pass from what was...
  20.  
  21. And as she wondered she began to search even deeper,
  22. Until at last her eyes saw pain, deep and hurting,
  23. barely discernible in the burnished flecked gold.
  24.  
  25. She was drawn to that hurt,
  26. for she had known it herself,
  27. a pain that slowly tore at her,
  28. that she recognized as her own.
  29.  
  30. And because she knew the pain inside him,
  31. even though it had burned her once, when once was,
  32. she still was compelled to reach out.
  33. Her hand drifting in the air,
  34. to softly land, ever gently against the solid thumping. . .
  35.  
  36. Of his heart . . . the source of his hurt.
  37. Her heart thumped in rhythm with his as it pumped warmth
  38. that spread through her body to her open fingers,
  39. and gently because she knew the pain was deep,
  40. she gave her warmth to him in peace,
  41. placing it ever tenderly . . .
  42.  
  43. Against his heart, warming the coldness of his pain.
  44.  
  45. And she watched as the warmth spread to his eyes,
  46. as once again they began to smile,
  47. the sadness changed to fire,
  48. the tears to laughter, and the
  49. loneliness to desire.
  50.  
  51. And she smiled also
  52. knowing that
  53. once was and what were
  54. had become now.
