  7. BACKGROUND:

  10. This program, first released in 1989, has been updated quar-
  11. terly each calendar quarter since then.  It was written, and
  12. is researched and updated on a weekly basis by Michael D.
  13. Jenkins, CPA and attorney, with a new version released each
  14. calendar quarter.  In addition to providing constantly up-
  15. dated tax, business, and legal information for small busi-
  16. nesses, the program itself is under almost constant revision
  17. and expansion, to make it ever-easier to use and more useful
  18. to you, the small business owner or adviser.

  20. Mr. Jenkins, a graduate of the Harvard Law School, former-
  21. ly was a tax attorney with a large San Francisco law firm
  22. noted for its expertise in venture capital matters.
  23.  
  24. Mr. Jenkins is also a Certified Public Accountant, and has
  25. practiced for over 4 years as a tax CPA with two of the
  26. "Big Six" international accounting firms, in Los Angeles
  27. and Honolulu, as well as several years as a manager and la-
  28. ter a tax partner with a large local CPA firm in the San
  29. Francisco area.  He also spent a couple of years as an
  30. economics and business consultant in L.A. and Washington,
  31. D.C., with the consulting firm and private "think tank,"
  32. Economics Research Associates.  At present, he authors a
  33. series of business "how-to" books and runs a small soft-
  34. ware company, Ronin Software, which publishes the shareware
  35. version of this program and another shareware program, the
  36. financial takeover game/simulation, "Wall $treet Raider."

  42. Mr. Jenkins is the principal author of the book "STARTING
  43. AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN @STATE."
  44.  
  45. He is also author or coauthor of 50 other similarly-titled
  46. books, one for each of the states (plus the District of
  47. Columbia), all of which are published by Oasis Press (a di-
  48. vision of PSI Research, of Grants Pass, Oregon -- a leading
  49. publisher of business books and software).

  51. Most of these 275-to-300-page how-to manuals are partially
  52. coauthored by local experts in the respective states (the
  53. local offices of the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, in
  54. some 30 states), and together have sold nearly a million
  55. copies nationwide since the initial book in the series,
  56. "STARTING AND OPERATING A BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA" (now in
  57. its 12th annual edition) first appeared in 1981.
