  135.    Q.  People say that there can be more than 250 message and file areas, how?
  136.  
  137.    A.  If and when you do need more areas than 250 areas, you go into the
  138.        RACONFIG under Manager, go over to the File Areas, and then hit PGDN
  139.        to you reach 250, then all you do is hit the INS key, and 1 more area
  140.        will be added, you do the same with the message areas.

  142.    Q.  I just switched to RA 2.01, and my message base doesnt allow me to
  143.        read new messages.
  144.  
  145.    A.  Try to check your batch file that runs your maintence, look for the
  146.        RAMSG option in there, if you just switched,it should appear like this:

  148.        RAMSG -L
  149.        RAMSG -I
  150.        or something similiar, what is wrong here is, RA 2.00, doesnt allow the
  151.        -P, -L, -I options anymore, now you MUST spell out the option what you
  152.        would like RAMSG to do.

  165.         they find how to do it!

  291.    A.  Simple, you must first go into the menu manager in the RACONFIG, find
  292.        your upload option and then change the optional data from the path to
  293.        the area number, in which you have the New Upload area.

  310.        (make sure you know what area 001a is, like Games A-Z, or something.

  339.            D/L security, List Security, and U/L security to suit your needs.
  340.            CD-ROM has to be set for YES, and the NEW has to be set for NO,
  341.            if set to yes, it would search this area in the NEW FILES SEARCH
  342.  
  343.    Q.  How do I import descriptions from the CD to the file manager?
  344.  
  345.    A.  Well, seeing how you should have already setup all the CD file areas,
  346.        you should now run GENFBASE, be sure that you remember the area numbers
  347.        that begin with your CD areas and the area that ends them.
  348.        +++ I advise that you backup your TXT, HDR, and IDX, directory before
  349.        you start this, you might mess it up and some words might be missing,
  350.        from the descriptions. +++ It will ask:
  351.  
  352.  
  353.        Start at area#: xxx     <put in the area number that begins with
  354.                                your CD files>
  355.  
  356.        End at area#: xxx       <put in the area number that ends with
  357.                                your CD files>
  358.  
  359.        Then it will ask about download counters.. put in NO.
  360.        Then it will ask about LF/CRs or something... check your Files.BBS
  361.        on the CD, to see whether or not if it has mulitple descriptions,
  362.        if it only has 1 line description (ie Monster Disc II), put in NO.
  363.        but if it does have mulitple descriptions (ie Night Owl vx.0) put in
  364.        YES.
  365.        If it asks about something having to do with indentation with the
  366.        Files.BBS, leave it at the default, 0.

  368.        go on with this thing. +++

  370.    Q.  I just switched from RA 1.11 to RA 2.0x, and this RAFILE thing is
  371.        sorta screwey to me.. how do I make it generate a newfiles list,
  372.        a master list, and main board files (this is if you have CD-ROM areas)
  373.        ? What is this /B option, the /D option, and the *.LST files used in
  374.        the RAFILE FILELIST command?
  375.  
  376.    A.  Here are my examples, the ones I use, and I organized it show I'll
  377.        show you what each one does.

  379.     rafile filelist d:\ra\files\concess\master.txt /Brafile.ban
  380.                     ╘══ path plus file name.       ╘═ banner to make appear
  381.                                                    before the list.

  398.       1-39 are the file areas that I want included on one of the lists that
  399.       I generated. Change it to anything that you want it to be.

  401.       The /Dx number shows the newfiles in how many days (x=days) (optional)
  402.  
  403.       The /Bxxxx.xxx option gives you the option if you want a banner file
  404.       in the filelist, you do not have to use this if you decide not too
  405.       (optional).

  408.       This is required, of course to make it run the filelist program.

  419.   A.    Simple, just add in the Optional Data line for these commands a
  420.         /T parameter, this will fix this up for you.

  1081.         First, you MUST place ALL of the INSTAgames' files into the directory
  1082.         which contains the Online INSTAbank files. Then you can configure
  1083.         the prices for the tickets, etc.. by running IGAME10 /C  this will
  1084.         then prompt you for information on the tickets (time/bytes/etc).

  1286.   Q.    On a different BBS Software, I've seen when you want to browse
  1287.         through their file areas, it gives the filearea name, the total
  1288.         number of files, and the total size of the filearea.. How would
  1289.         I get something to do that .. and use it for a filearea statistic?

  1291.   A.    Get a file called FILESTAT by Bill Dykstra, and it will generate
  1292.         a listing like this.. It is VERY easy to setup. This is what to
  1293.         do:
  1294.  
  1295.         Once you unzip/unarj/etc the archive place filestat.* into your
  1296.         RemoteAccess directory (or wherever), once you do that, type in
  1297.         FILESTAT /C   this will bring you into it's little configuration
  1298.         setup, the only question it asks you is where the CONFIG.RA is
  1299.         location at, simply insert the path there without the filename,
  1300.         and then the next step is: simply run the program nightly to
  1301.         maintain a correct filearea listing or statistics.  Simply run,
  1302.         FILESTAT each night, when you are done it will produce a file
  1303.         called FILESTAT.A?? into your textfiles directory, and it looks
  1304.         like this:

  1382.         with it, and what do you know?  IT READS YOUR CONFIG.RA and it
  1383.         automatically setups you up!  The paths, pages per day, etc., were
  1384.         all setup for me!  I loved it, and now, I use it whenever I chat with
  1385.         users.. Plus, it uses horizontal and vertical chat modes, and also
  1386.         can use your SoundBlaster card (if you have one) to play MODs as
  1387.         a paging tune (more information on this is in the ICECHAT.DOC).

  2915.    This was basically the part that had given me trouble xMail kept on
  2916.    saying couldnt find c:\netmail when I didnt have the path correct, then
  2917.    I looked into this part of the XMSETUP file, the EDIT XMAIL.CFG file,
  2918.    the is a -=MUST=- to get all of the paths right, in the normal archive
  2919.    it shows the default drive to be E: and well for me it is my CDROM drive.
  2920.    So, you'll just have to configure this little sucker, it's easy to do.
  2921.  
  2922.     Here is my batch file to run this, it's just the same as FastEcho's, the
  2923.     one listed above in that section, but I simply redid the parameters and
  2924.     the paths.

  2976.     I run FastEcho, seeing how I have it registered, but I heard everyone
  2977.     talking about xMail) and had seen xMail on some of the people's tearlines,
  2978.     and well, I thought as soon as it came out why not add it to Q&A4RA?  So,
  2979.     here it is..  I -=DID=- post a test msg in the RA_SUPPORT echo, and ran XM
  2980.     EXPORT and it Zipped it up, and it placed the message to be sent out to
  2981.     it's correct directory, with the correct address to send it out to.  I,
  2982.     personally, like both FastEcho and xMail they both get the job done. I
  2983.     have not recieved a packet, with xMail and have not actually seen how it
  2984.     imports messages, but it looks fast to me! It took me 15mins for me to set
  2985.     everything up and test this tosser out. Use what you like, I am not telling
  2986.     you which tosser is better or which one to use, these are just my opinions.
  2987.     Both xMail and FastEcho get the job done quick and easy. Experiment around
  2988.     with them!

  3036. each line is preceded by a '>' character.  Do not type this in, it's just to
  3037. show that this is a file line, not part of my babbling  8-)

  3039. Now, on to the Good Stuff
  3040. -------------------------
  3041.  
  3042.      What will this textfile allow you to do ?  Specifically, coach you in
  3043. setting up BinkleyTerm v2.50EE with RemoteAccess v2.01.  Hopefully, the idea
  3044. will be usable with any OS/2 Mailer (or Comm program for that matter) and DOS
  3045. BBS.  
  3046.  
  3047. My configuration (i.e. what I _know_ it works with)
  3048.  
  3049.      - BinkleyTerm/2 v2.50EE
  3050.      - RemoteAccess v2.01
  3051.      - SIO (SIO, VSIO, VX00) v1.20
  3052.      - 4OS2-32 v1.11
  3053.  
  3054. How to do it
  3055. ------------
  3056.  
  3057.      The important thing to do is remove protection from the port you will be
  3058. using. OS/2 built in protection is what comes up and says "Sharing violation on
  3059. COMx".  SIO allows you to remove protection for a port (although it's not
  3060. documented).  I checked with Ray Gwinn that it was alright to document it here,
  3061. so this is how : In CONFIG.SYS, put a dash (-) in the 5th position of the comm
  3062. port parameters.  If you are not using the 4th parameter, put an extra comma to
  3063. space it out correctly.  For example, my setup using COM2 locked at 38400
  3064. without protection is :
  3065.  
  3066. > DEVICE=C:\OS2\EXTRAS\SIO.SYS (COM2:38400,,,-)
  3067.  
  3068. Load VX00.SYS as usual after this.  This is all that's required for CONFIG.SYS
  3069.  
  3070. Now, in Binkley.Cfg, I use BBSSpawn.  My SPAWNBBS.CMD contains this :
  3071.

  3075.      You'll notice that this echoes the parameters %BPS% %PORT% %EVENT TIME%
  3076. %EXTENDED CONNECT% into my \RA\DOBBS.BAT file.  I'm a recent FrontDoor convert,
  3077. and using this produces a DOBBS.BAT that is compatible with FD's. Also, notice
  3078. that I am forcing port 2 into the batch file.  This is because BT passes the
  3079. Port Handle that OS/2 assigns, which is not the physical port number.  If you
  3080. are running singleline, just force the port as I have.  If not, use a %PORT
  3081. environment variable to do the same task.
  3082.  
  3083.      You'll notice I'm using 4OS2 in the above example.  The reason is that
  3084. 4OS2-32 (not the 16 bit version) allows you to start a DOS session with a
  3085. specific set of settings, similar to the way you set up an object's DOS settings
  3086. on the workplace shell.  The file C:\OS2\4DOS\RA.INI contains the following :
  3087.

  3091. > SIO_ALLOW_ACCESS_COM2=1
  3092. > EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT=2048
  3093. > XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT=2048
  3094. > INT_DURING_IO=1
  3095.  
  3096.      This allows me to load VX00.SYS when the DOS session is spawned from the
  3097. Binkley window.  The /WAIT switch on the command line makes the session wait
  3098. until the DOS session closes to restart Binkley.  This eliminates the need to
  3099. use semaphores as detailed in the MAGIC package that has been available for some
  3100. time.  If you don't want or can't use 4OS2-32, you can try using HSTART or
  3101. STARTD, both of which allow you to start a DOS session with specific DOS
  3102. sessions.  Individual results may vary.
  3103.

  3107.      The thing that has caused me (and other people) problems in the past is
  3108. with regard to SIO.  I don't fully understand it, but I'll try to put it as best
  3109. I can.  SIO has some part of it to handle the communication with DOS sessions. 
  3110. This part is not initialized when SIO loads, presumably to reduce overhead on
  3111. systems not using DOS communications.  The part is initialized the first time
  3112. that VX00.SYS is loaded. The problem is that if there is a carrier present when
  3113. this part is woken up, something happens.  The DOS app can send data out the
  3114. port, but nothing can travel inbound.
  3115.  
  3116.     The solution to this problem has been provided by Ray Gwinn, author of SIO.
  3117. I have spoken with him regarding this, and I'm not sure if my report helped him
  3118. track down the cause of the problem, but the following excerpt from SIO
  3119. v1.21k's READ.ME file explains :
  3120.  
  3121.  
  3122.            The method in which the SIO_Mode setting are implemented has
  3123.            been changed.  These settings specify only the initial mode
  3124.            settings to use for a DOS session.  Changes made to the mode
  3125.            (via a MODE or other command) within the DOS session are no
  3126.            longer lost.  The SIO_Mode settings isolate the DOS VDM's
  3127.            mode from that of OS/2 sessions in all but one case.  The
  3128.            one case is when the port is already opened when DOS first
  3129.            accesses it.  In this one case, the SIO_Mode settings are
  3130.            not applied.  Except for this one case, one should view OS/2
  3131.            as having its mode settings and DOS sessions as having an
  3132.            independent group of mode settings. 
  3133.  
  3134.    As you can see, the problem lied in SIO trying to apply the specified Mode
  3135. settings to an opened port. You need SIO v1.21k or higher (a beta version, it
  3136. is currently available as SIOBETA, but there may well be a release version
  3137. implementing the same fix by the time you read this) to perform this little
  3138. trick.

  3140. Other Versions of Programs
  3141. --------------------------
  3142.  
  3143. I am pretty sure that this will work using Standard BinkleyTerm/2, but I haven't
  3144. yet tried.  As long as your DOS BBS program runs well in a straight all DOS
  3145. combination under OS/2, it should work under this method.  For SIO, older
  3146. versions than v1.20 should work, but newer versions (usually) provide better
  3147. performance.

  3192. BBS system, make it this one.  Take a minute to think where we'd be without Ray
  3193. Gwinn and SIO.  Can you say "CRC Error" ?  Knew you could.  Ray gave us X00
  3194. without charge, and now he's asking what I consider a paltry sum for
  3195. SIO/VSIO/VX00 ($25 US).  If you want Ray to continue to improve this fine
  3196. driver, we have to show support for him.  Thank you.
