  1. Thank you for trying ListenUp Version 3.02!
  2.  
  3. ListenUp is ear training software for musicians.  ListenUp
  4. combines sound and colors in a graphical user interface
  5. to help musicians improve their sense of pitch.
  6.  
  7. By pairing a color with each note, notes can be recognized
  8. quickly and easily.  By practising with ListenUp, you can
  9. learn to recognize any note, even when the Color Pairs are
  10. turned off.
  11.  
  12. ListenUp generates notes randomly, so you won't be able to
  13. master the drills through rote learning.
  14.  
  15. ListenUp now supports SoundBlaster, Ad Lib, and compatible
  16. sound cards!  You activate the sound card and choose your
  17. instrument by selecting Configuration in the Main Menu.
  18. Please note: you must activate your sound card each time you
  19. run the shareware version of ListenUp.
  20.  
  21. Why pay $100.00 or more for an audio cassette course?  Ear
  22. training is a natural application for the computer.
  23. University studies in the U.S. and Canada have shown that
  24. associating colors with musical notes can dramatically
  25. improve one's sense of pitch!
  26.  
  27. ListenUp contains a Main Menu and two learning modules:
  28.  
  29. The first module generates a single random note along with a
  30. colored circle.  Press the Space Bar to hear (and see) a
  31. randomly generated note.  After the note is played, you guess
  32. the name of the note by moving the Right/Left arrow keys and
  33. pressing Enter at your choice.  If you are unsure which note
  34. you heard, you can do one of four things:
  35.  
  36. Push "F1".  This will switch you to the Color Reference
  37. Chart, which shows you which color each semi-tone has been
  38. assigned to (This Color Chart is also available at the Main
  39. Menu).

  41. Push "F2".  This plays Middle "C", to provide a reference.
  42.  
  43. Push "F3".  This replays the note you just heard.
  44.  
  45. Or, you can just guess!  ListenUp keeps track of your score.
  46.  
  47. Once you get to know which colors are assigned to which
  48. notes, you will consistently get a 100% score.  In the Main
  49. Menu, you can switch the Color Pairs off and then do more
  50. trials.  Then you will be ready for Interval Training!
  51.  
  52. The second module involves interval training (an interval is
  53. the distance between two notes).  Here, you are presented
  54. with two notes in succession.  The first (or root) note can
  55. be changed by you by pressing "F4" (default is "C").  The
  56. second note is randomly generated.  Your task is to identify
  57. the interval presented (major 5th, minor 7th, octave, etc.).
  58. Again, work with Color Pairs switched on initially.  Later,
  59. go on to identify intervals without the use of the assigned
  60. colors.  Again, ListenUp keeps track of your score.

  62. Do not worry about what you should be thinking while using
  63. ListenUp.  Just relax, and treat it like a game.  It is
  64. probably not worthwhile to spend more than 15 - 20 minutes
  65. with this program at any one sitting.

  67. REQUIREMENTS

  69. An I.B.M. or compatible computer, with EGA/VGA monitor, 512k
  70. RAM, DOS 2.2 or higher.  All I.B.M. and compatible computers
  71. come equipped with an internal speaker.

  73. ListenUp supports SoundBlaster, AdLib, and compatible sound
  74. cards.

  77. INSTALLATION
  78.  
  79. Listenup will run from a floppy drive if you wish.  If you
  80. wish to install to a hard drive (say, drive C) first make a
  81. directory called LUP and then copy the diskette to your
  82. destination drive:

  85. COPY A:\*.* C:\LUP  (copies the diskette to drive C)

  89. To start the program, move to the directory you created and
  90. type:

  94. There are four files on this diskette:
  95. - README.1ST (The one you are reading now)
  96. - LISTENUP.DOC (A short manual you can print out)
  97. - REGISTER.DOC (A form you can print out and complete when
  98.                 you are ready to register)
  99. - LISTENUP.EXE (The program)
