▓░▒║ SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ║▒░▓
╚═══════════════════════╝
- IBM or compatible Personal Computer with approx. 320K free memory.
- ANSI driver and an ANSI supported BBS Software.
- The ability to generate a DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS file.
- A fossil driver such as X00 or BNU.
╔══════════════════════════════╗
▓░▒║ CONFIGURATION/INSTALLATION ▒░▓
╚══════════════════════════════╝
It's simple. Create a new sub-directory and de-arc this archive into the
new directory. Use BT_UTIL to configure Beer Trivia to your likings, or
type up a file using your favorite text editor by the name BEERTRIV.CFG (or
just alter the one that is included) and put in the following parameters:
Line 1: Name of the BBS.
Line 2: The full name (first & Last) of the BBS' SYSOP.
Line 3: Path to your door information files and drop file name. For
example: C:\BBS\DORINFO1.DEF or C:\BBS\NODE2\DOOR.SYS.
Line 4: Path and name to ASCII winners listing. For example:
C:\BBS\BULLETIN\BULL14.ASC
Be sure to put the filename and DO NOT LEAVE THIS LINE BLANK!
If no path is specified then Beer Trivia will write the bulletin
in the same directory where the executable file resides.
Line 5: Path and name to ANSI winners listing. For example:
C:\BBS\BULLETIN\BULL14.ANS
Be sure to put the filename and DO NOT LEAVE THIS LINE BLANK!
If no path is specified then Beer Trivia will write the bulletin
in the same directory where the executable file resides.
Line 6: Amount of time the player is allowed to play in one day.
If this is set to 0 then the player is allowed as much time
as he/she has left on the BBS.
Line 7: Should Beer Trivia reset at the end of each month? Put a Y on this
line if you wish Beer Trivia reset. Resetting will wipe out the
current month's high scores (top belchers) and create a "Last
Month's High Scores" bulletin.
Line 8: Registration Number.
If you copy of Beer Trivia is registered, place your registration
number here EXACTLY as it appears.
If you have not registered Beer Trivia (yet (G)) place a 0 here.

▓░▒║ LET'S RUN THIS PUPPY ║▒░▓
╚════════════════════════╝
!!! NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE !!!
This game contains some material of an adult sexual nature (about 10%)
and nearly 1/2 of the questions deal with alcoholic beverages.
Therefore, Caliber Software strenuously recommends that only those over
the age of 18 be allowed to play this game! We highly suggest that this
game be placed in an adult verified location!
To run Beer Trivia simply set up your batch file along these lines:
CD \BBS\DOORS\BEERTRIV
BEERTRIV BEERTRIV.CFG
CD \BBS
and that should do it.
Optional command line parameters are available. See the section on COMMAND
LINE SWITCHES below.
Alternate configuration files may be placed on the command line to aid those
using multi-node system. For example: BEERTRIV NODE2.CFG will run tell Beer
Trivia to run as the file NODE2.CFG specifies. Full path statements are
supported.
╔═════════════════════════╗
▓░▒║ COMMAND LINE SWITCHES ║▒░▓
╚═════════════════════════╝
A number of command line switches are supported by Beer Trivia. Below
are the details of each switch. All switches must have a backslash (/
or a dash (-) in front of them. For example:
BEERTRIV BEERTRIV.CFG /L /NS
would run Beer Trivia in local mode and to have the local screen is
blanked no matter what the configuration file says (as described below)
Command line switches ARE NOT case sensitive.
H (or ?) displays a short help screen with all command line options
and brief descriptions.
L Local mode. Using this switch forces Beer Trivia will ignore
sending or receiving characters from the comport. When called in
this manner Beer Trivia will not need the use of door files
(DOOR.SYS, etc) but DOES need a configuration file setting. The
program will prompt you for your name and whether you want graphics
or not, all other settings (such as time left, etc) will default to
internal settings.
NB No Status Bar. This switch will tell Beer Trivia to default to
having the status bar turned off upon log-in. This switch is useful
for getting a better feeling of what the user sees without the 2
line status bar at the bottom, or in conjunction with the NS switch
will complete clear the screen.
NS No Snoop. This switch will turn the snoop feature off (blank the
screen while the user is in the door so you don't see what the user
is up to.)
╔══════════════╗
▓░▒║ SYSOP KEYS ║▒░▓
╚══════════════╝
Various key combinations have been included in this program. Following
is a brief description of what they are and what they do.
ALT-F1: Display help. This will give a summary of the available SYSOP
keys along the bottom of the status bar. As soon as the next minute
rolls around the normal status bar will appear.
ALT-B : Toggle Status Bar ON/OFF. Using this function will turn the
status bar ON/OFF. This comes in handy if you wish to have more of an
idea what the user would be seeing (without the 2 line status bar at
the bottom of the screen) Used in conjunction with ALT-S it can be
used to completely blank a screen.
ALT-C : Chat Mode. This key combination toggles chat mode. When chat
is entered the screen is quickly memorized and re-drawn when chat is
exited. This memorization only occurs if the user has ANSI graphics
enabled. The re-draw feature helps the user to pick back up where they
were before the chat. Time IS lost during chat. Use ALT-C again to
exit chat mode.
ALT-D : DROP TO DOS. This function allows the SYSOP to drop to DOS to
do whatever. The user will see nothing, and cannot activate this
function so the door is 'hack proof' Be aware that this program does
not perform a memory swap before dropping, so a minimum amount of
memory is required. This amount varies from system to system, largely
due to the type of software being run. If you do not have enough
memory then you will simply be returned to the program.
ALT-S : Toggle Snoop ON/OFF. Some SYSOPs prefer not to watch what a
user is doing while in a door for whatever reasons. Using this
function will clear the local screen and nothing will be written to the
local screen until ALT-S is pressed again, or until the door is exited.
Note that the status bar will remain on unless it has been toggled off.
This allows you to see who the user is, how much time is left, etc.
ALT-<UP ARROW>: Adds one minute to users time in the door (not added to
BBS time limit!)
ALT-<DOWN ARROW>: Deducts one minute from the users time in the door
(not deducted from BBS time limit!)

▓░▒║ MULTI-NODE USE ║▒░▓
╚════════════════╝
As noted in other parts of this document, Beer Trivia attempts to be
multi-node aware. File locking is done to prevent simultaneous reads
and writes to the same file. The information files are updated often
to keep the user informed on what is going on with other nodes.
Beer Trivia also supports the capability of calling different
configuration files.
There are no other special tricks to running a multi-node Beer Trivia
door, other than not allowing the same user to log onto Beer Trivia
from more than one node at a time.
╔═══════════════╗
▓░▒║ BT_UTIL.EXE ║▒░▓
╚═══════════════╝
Included with the Beer Trivia package is a SYSOP utility program. With this
utility you can create and edit configuration files, player information, and
questions. You may also use this utility to create new questions for the
question database. Bear in mind that only the first 75 questions will be
accessible to the user on unregistered copies of Beer Trivia.
While no detailed explanations of how to use BT_UTIL are given here, we
feel the program is user friendly enough to be navigated and understood
easily. Simply run BT_UTIL from the Beer Trivia game directory, and
keep your eyes peeled for hints at the bottom of the screens and top
and bottom of any dialogue boxes
╔═══════════════╗
▓░▒║ OTHER NOTES ║▒░▓
╚═══════════════╝
- Registered users of Beer Trivia will be able to receive additional
question banks for the mere cost of delivery. The question bank of 75
questions packaged with the archive is a good hint at what these question
banks will be like. Also, registered users will receive a question
editor so that they may add their own questions at will.
- Beer Trivia is multi-node aware. More than one node may use Beer Trivia
simultaneously and Beer Trivia does it's own file locking (via the use of
LOCK.BT) to insure that no files are damaged.
- Scores will reset, assuming the RESET AT END OF MONTH switch in the
configuration file is set to Y, at the beginning of each month. A file of
last month's scores (LASTSCORE.*) is viewable from within the door or may
be copied to be included as part of your BBS's bulletins.
- All Beer Trivia questions contained in all question packs are absolutely
original. You will NOT find these questions in ANY other trivia game.
╔══════════════════╗
▓░▒║ SPECIAL THANKS ║▒░▓
╚══════════════════╝
A *HUGE* thanks goes out to Aaron Williams for helping in development,
and in writing somewhere between 1/4 to 3/4 of all questions you find
in this game, and all of the question packs.
Also, thanks to the users of ProTem University BBS, and the SYSOP and
users of Caliber Software Beta Sites for your suggestions, bug reports,
and question suggestions.

▓░▒║ ABOUT CALIBER SOFTWARE ║▒░▓
╚══════════════════════════╝
We keep the end user in mind. We attempt to go out of my way to make
things easy to operate, understand, install, etc. We do not fail to
implement functions because it would inconvenience us. We listen to
what YOU have to say. If you have a good suggestion send it in and you
will probably see it in the next release.
Caliber Software takes the position that shareware is a friendly
concept. We do not believe that Shareware should cost the outrageous
prices that some authors are asking for. For this reason we resolve to
keep our programs in the $5 - $10, and MAYBE $15 if a great amount of
effort was put into a project, and if the program is worth it.
We try to keep the quality of my programming up. Professionalism is
the key to shareware. If it's going to work, it needs to be good, and
this is what we are striving for.
We keep the programs as slim and trim as possible. They are always
full featured but do not have to be 6 megs to get the job done. Small
and fast is another goal of Caliber Software.
We hope that you enjoy and get your monies worth out of our programming
and invite you to review our entire line.
╔═══════════════════╗
▓░▒║ HOW TO REGISTER ║▒░▓
╚═══════════════════╝
Registration entitles you to the most current copy of Beer Trivia (if you do
not already have it), a registration number for your config file, the
ability to receive additional question banks for cost of shipping only, and
a question editor for your question files. Registration will also entitle
you to my full support. Note that we are open to the idea of customizing
programs, to a reasonable degree, for registered SYSOPs.
Beer Trivia will only use the first 75 questions in any question bank as
long as the program is unregistered. I am sorry for this cripple, but the
honesty system was not working!!! 75 questions should give you and your
users a good idea of what this game is all about and whether you wish to
purchase a copy of it or not.
Registration is simple. Fill out the inclosed form, and send it along with
$10 to the following address. If you have 'lost' the inclosed form then
send $10 in U.S. Funds to: Caliber Software

letters!!! I.E. ProTem and ProTem are different names!!!), and BBS phone
number, your voice phone number (optional), what program and version number
you are registering, and whether you would like updates on a 5 1/4 or 3 1/2
inch disk. Include your FIDO or DOOR-NET address if you have one and the
update and registration number with be sent via net-mail (FAST!)
Please register and support shareware so that quality programs will continue
