ViewPKT! v1.00 WHAT IS VIEWPKT?
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
WHAT IS VIEWPKT!
ViewPKT! is a very powerful diagnostic tool which allows you to
select any of the preconfigured mail directories within WILDMAIL!
v3.00 and display the various .MSG style messages along with
their file attachments. Information such as To:/From: addresses,
origination system of the PKT and so on are easily available.
Once the message has been selected, the file attachments can be
uncompressed and its contents displayed allowing you to choose
which of the PKT files you would like to view.
After selection, complete information about the file including
header information, password, PKT type and so on is available for
display. You can easily scroll thru all the messages within the
PKT file with all the control code information highlighted for
easy viewing. You may also select any directory of your choice
to view MSG or PKT type files.
As was stated earlier, ViewPKT! is a diagnostic tool for use in
troubleshooting echomail related problems. The beauty of the
program is its ability to provide an easy to use point and shoot
type interface to "expose" echomail in a manner never achieved
before. Anyone can easily use ViewPKT! to better manage echomail
misaddressing problems, password related failures, mail ending up
in the Badecho directory and so on without having a PHD in
Computer Science. ViewPKT! may very well end up being a must
have utility in your echomail toolbox!

ViewPKT! v1.00 30 DAY EVALUATION
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
30 DAY EVALUATION KEY FILE
ViewPKT! utilizes a special file to activate its usage for a
period of 30 days. This method allows the program to be fully
utilized with all options enabled for the duration of the
evaluation period. If the product hasn't been registered after
the thirty days, ViewPKT! will inform you it has expired and will
simply cease to run.
Since the current method of distribution prevents a "dated" key
file from be included in the distribution archive files, you must
dial up the support board (listed below) and create this special
key file. The Main Menu option "Create Evaluation Keys"
initiates this process and you simply enter in the required
information and then follow the instructions for downloading.
The ViewPKT! support board may reached by dialing:
(707) 552-0602 - USR HST (2 lines)
(707) 552-0636 - v32bis (3 lines)
(707) 552-2344 - USR DS (2 lines)
Only one key per person/registration number will be allowed.
KEY GENERATION
For those people that register over the phone using a credit
card, we can usually generate your registered key file on the
spot and have it up for download on our BBS before 5pm (PST) the
same day.
If you send in your registration making payment via check and
your evaluation period is about the expire, we can put up another
30 day key to allow you to continue to use the program until the
10 day hold period on your check is up.
For all orders, in addition to putting up your registered key
file for download, we'll create a diskette and put the most
current release on it along with your registered key file and
mail it off to you.

ViewPKT! v1.00 USER INTERFACE
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
USER INTERFACE
ViewPKT! has been designed from the ground up with the novice
user in mind. Alot of extra care has been spent in thinking thru
the features in an effort to somewhat simplify the complex area
of echomail and its varied methods of configuration and
implementation.
Industry standard selection and entry techniques are employed
throughout the program as well as good old fashioned common sense
programming. The [ESC] is used to abort any process as well as
pressing [F1] brings up help information.
Option Selection
Throughout ViewPKT!, you can use the Up/Dn arrow keys to the
position the highlight bar on the desired item and pressing
[ENTER] will invoke the function. While viewing the message with
a PKT file, tapping the [SPACEBAR] advances to the next message.
You may use the PgUp/PgDn to move about the body of the messages
as well as position the highlight bar from the selection screens.
Pressing [ESC] from most any screen will abort the current
process and return you to the previous screen. From the Main
Menu, pressing [ESC] will exit ViewPKT! and return you to DOS.
Context Sensitive Help
Full context sensitive help is available anywhere by simply
pressing the [F1] key. This means that whatever your doing in
ViewPKT!, pressing the [F1] key brings up help information
relative to the information being displayed.
You may also press [F1] a second time to display a list of help
topics to choose from. Simply position the highlight bar on the
desired topic and press [ENTER]. Once you're finished viewing
the help information, pressing the [ESC] key returns you to the
previous screen.
Throughout the help topics, certain portions of the help text may
contain highlighted words or phrases. For those viewing in
color, this is White Text on a Cyan background and mono systems
is White Text on a Black background.
This highlighted text indicates that a relative subtopic is
available for viewing. Simply position the cursor to the
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

ViewPKT! v1.00 USER INTERFACE
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
highlighted text and press [ENTER]. When you're finished viewing
this subtopic, pressing ALT [F1] will return you to the previous
help topic.
CRT Display Modes
ViewPKT! has been designed to operate in any of three display
modes. The standard mode of 25 lines, 43 and 50 line modes.
Depending on the section being configured, the window sizes will
adjust themselves automatically including those for the online
help.
Status Bar
Throughout ViewPKT! a status bar located at the bottom of the
screen (25, 43 and 50 line modes) always indicates the available
options. Depending on where you're at, these options will change
automatically.
DOS Shell
Because ViewPKT! has been designed with the user in mind, there
may come a time when you're in the middle of viewing something
and you need to go to DOS to check on the location of a file or
subdirectory. Holding down the ALT key and pressing the letter D
causes ViewPKT! to swap itself out of memory and return you to
the DOS prompt.
As part of the swap process, only a small kernel of memory is
taken up making available nearly all of your memory to execute
another program in. Once you have finished with your work in
DOS, at the prompt, typing the command:
EXIT
will return you to same section within ViewPKT! you originally
exited from and allows you to resume normally. Again, you may
press ALT D anywhere within the configuration process to shell to
DOS.

ViewPKT! v1.00 MAIN MENU OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
MAIN MENU OPTIONS
In order to better organize the different types of mail, the Main
Menu has been divided up into 2 sections. Display .MSG type
files and display compressed mail archives. There are some
exceptions to this especially when it comes to Netmail messages
with attached echomail archives, but more on that later.
Display .MSG Style Messages
The first section being those directories that are defined in
WILDMAIL! which contain .MSG style message formats. Shown below
are the available options.
Display Netmail Directory
Display BadEcho Directory
Display Other MSG Directory
Because ViewPKT! uses the preconfigured DOS paths setup in
WILDMAIL! v3.+, the Display Netmail and BadEcho directories
options define the location where ViewPKT! should look to find
.MSG style messages. The Display Other MSG Directory option
allows you to manually specify the DOS <drive:\directory>
ViewPKT! should look in.
Display Mail Archives
The second section is where the raw PKT files and the compressed
mail archives exist on your system as defined in WILDMAIL!.
Display Inbound Archives/PKTs
Display Outbound Archives/PKTs
Display Preprocessed Archives/PKTs
Display Other Archives/PKTs Path
As with the top portion of the menu, the above options allow you
tell ViewPKT! to look in the respective directories for the mail
archives to display as configured in WILDMAIL!.
Display Other Directories
On both menu sections, you may select the "Display Other..."
option to specify which directory you would like to display the
contents of. Only those files that match specific criteria will
be displayed such as .MSG, .PKT, .OUT, MO0 and so on.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 6
ViewPKT! v1.00 MAIN MENU OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Selecting the option presents you with a field where you may
specify the DOS path where you wish ViewPKT! to look for .MSG,
PKT and mail archives on your system.
Normal DOS naming conventions apply so if you enter a invalid DOS
path, ViewPKT! will simply return you to the Main Menu. Once a
valid DOS path has been entered, pressing [ENTER] will present
you with a list of available files for selection.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 7
ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
The Display Netmail/BadEcho directories options from the Main
Menu display .MSG type files and thus will be discussed as if
they were the same option. The only real difference here is the
actual DOS directory ViewPKT! will be looking in.
Selecting either of these options displays a list of .MSG files
in its respective directory available for selection and/or
viewing. The screen is divided up to into 2 distinctly different
sections with certain information shared between both windows.
This permits easy viewing with a minimum of effort.
Split Screen Display
The top portion contains all the specific information about the
highlighted message such as To/From address, Subject line, Flag
status and so on.
The bottom portion is the actual list of messages that may be
selected. You may use the Up/Dn arrow keys along with the
PgUp/PgDn keys to position the highlight bar on the desired
message followed by pressing [ENTER] to view the contents of it.
Most all the fields are self explanatory except the FAttach field
which indicates the number of file attachments the highlighted
message has associated with it.
Located at the bottom corners of this window is the current
<drive:\directory> where the list of messages is being read from
as well as the total number found.
Delete a .MSG File
You may delete the highlighted message by simply pressing the
[DELETE] key and answering Y to confirmation prompt. For obvious
reasons, caution is advised when using this option.
DISPLAYING ACTUAL .MSG FILES
After selecting the desired message number and pressing [ENTER],
a new screen is displayed. The top portion indicates the
To:/From: information as well as the conference area this message
is associated with.
If no AREA: name is found in the message body, the message is
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 8
ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
assumed to be a Netmail message otherwise, the real AREA name
will be displayed in the top window.
The bottom window is the actual message body. All the special
control code information is displayed in hexadecimal format and
highlighted for easy identification. The most commonly used
codes are shown below.
01 - Control A. This is typically used to "hide" the
information on the current line from view.
0D - Carriage Return. This code repositions the cursor to
the beginning of the current line.
0A - Line Feed. This code positions the cursor to the next
line down. This is typically used along with the 0D
code to force a new line and start displaying text at
the first position of that line.
Word Wrapping
Because of the nature of how messages may be created, when
ViewPKT! displays the message in the bottom window, if its line
length plus the control code information exceeds the window,
ViewPKT! will automatically wrap the text onto the next line.
This can be easily recognized by the missing Hex 0D0A characters
for that line. This is simply done for display purposes and in
no way affects the actual control code information within the
message.
Special Information/Control Lines
Depending on what the message is used for often dictates the
information it may contain. Netmail messages usually come in
three common formats. One which contains a real message to a
specific person at a specific address and another used to
transmit files from one system to another. The third form is a
combination of the above two.
Special null messages are typically used to transmit a file (or
files) to a specific address and thus contains no "readable"
message body. However, it may contain special control
information such as Flag status, INTL kludge line addressing
information and so on.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 9
ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Shown below is a brief description of the various control lines
you may encounter. As a special note, these lines almost always
start off with a Hex 01 and usually end up with a Hex 0D0A
combination.
INTL 86:250/110 1:161/123
This line is commonly referred to as the International Kludge
Line. This is used to indicate the To: and From: addresses for
proper handling in Multi-Zone transmissions. In other words, it
is usually only used when mail is transmitted from one zone to
another. In the above example, from 1:161/123 to 86:250/110.
However depending on the configuration, these lines may be forced
on every Netmail message.
FLAGS FIL KFS
As the name implies, this line indicates the flags associated
with this message. Shown below is a description of each of the
flags.
FIL - File. This indicates there is an attached file as
indicated on the SUBJECT line of the message.
KFS - Kill/File/Sent. This means as soon as the message has
been sent, the mailer is instructed to delete it along
with the associated file(s).
IMM - Immediate. This instructs the mailer to send the
message out immediately regardless of the current
operating restrictions.
DIR - Direct. This tells the mailer to send the message
directly to the address it's destined for and not allow
it to be routed.
FMPT: 1
This line indicates the message originated from a point. In this
case, point #1 off of the From: address of the message.
TOPT: 3
This is identical to the FMPT: except indicates the message is
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 10
ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
destined to a point. The above example, point #3 off of the To:
address in the message.
NETMAIL/.MSG SPECIFIC KEYWORDS
For those messages in .MSG format (they are the ones that usually
end up in your Bad Echo directory) additional information may
also be included. Shown below is a brief description.
AREA:WILDCAT
This is the special keyword/area name combination used to match
up the area name (immediately following the "AREA:" definition)
this message came from to the area name defined in WILDMAIL!.
The name is then used by WILDMAIL! to toss it into the
appropriate message database. If it doesn't match, WILDMAIL!
will place it in the Bad Echo directory for later disposition.
MSGID: 1:2410/119@fidonet.org 3014876d
EID:8d50 1a88a260
PID: FM 2.02
SEEN-BY: 161/123 504
These SEEN-BY: lines only contain the <net/node> portion of the
node addresses. Notice that the <zone> information is NOT
contained within them, thus limiting the duplicate checking to
only nodes within the same <zone>.
The keyword "SEEN-BY:" must start at position 1 on a new line
following the origin line information (unless it's preceded by
special characters which hide it). The node addresses follow it
separated by a single space and can inherit the <net> portion of
the previous address on the line.
In the above example, it's assumed that node address 504 is
actually 161/504. Normally these lines are sorted by the mail
processor each time a new node address is added with each line
limited to approximately 78 characters (total) in length before a
new line is created.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Revised: 04/15/93 Page 11
ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAY .MSG FILE OPTIONS
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
PATH: 161/123
PATH lines follow the SEEN-BY: lines in the message and operate
almost identically to them except these lines indicate the route
(or path) the message has taken to get to your system. Unlike
the SEEN-BY: lines, the PATH lines are not sorted because they
indicate from left to right the originating system and the
systems the message encountered before arriving at your system.
The same <net> inheritance from the previous node address applies
as well.
[F2] - Attached Files
On messages that have file attachments, pressing [F2] will
display a list of those files and may be selected for viewing.
Normally these files are compressed and typically contain the PKT
type files used to distribute the echomail in.
Positioning the highlight bar on the desired file name and
pressing [ENTER] will cause ViewPKT! to do either of two
things.
1) If the file selected is a .PKT file, ViewPKT! will
simply display the messages contained within.
2) If the file selected is a compressed mail archive,
ViewPKT! will uncompress the archive into a subdirectory
off of the current directory and present you with
a list of files found within the archive. From there
you may select the desired PKT file and view the
contents of it.
Once you're finished viewing the file, ViewPKT! will
automatically cleanup after itself by deleting the
temporary directory along with its contents leaving the
original file completely intact.
If you're viewing compressed file attachments, ViewPKT! will
automatically check to ensure you have adequate disk space
before proceeding. When uncompressing files, a window is
displayed showing the unarchival progress.
After viewing a selected PKT file, pressing [ESC] returns you
to this list and allows you to select another file for
viewing. Pressing [ESC] a second time returns you to the
previous screen.

ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAYING MAIL ARCHIVES
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
DISPLAYING MAIL ARCHIVES
This section covers the Display Inbound/Outbound Directory
options found on the Main Menu. Typically these directories
contain the compressed mail archives and are usually attached to
a Netmail message. From here you can select which directory to
have ViewPKT! display a list of available files.
Positioning the highlight bar on the desired file name and
pressing [ENTER] will cause ViewPKT! to do either of two things.
1) If the file selected is a .PKT file, ViewPKT! will
simply display the messages contained within.
2) If the file selected is a compressed mail archive,
ViewPKT! will uncompress the archive into a
subdirectory off of the current directory and present
you with a list of files found within the archive.
From there you may select the desired PKT file and view
the contents of it.
Once you're finished viewing the file, ViewPKT! will
automatically cleanup after itself by deleting the
temporary directory along with its contents leaving the
original file completely intact.
If you're viewing compressed file attachments, ViewPKT! will
automatically check to ensure you have adequate disk space before
proceeding. When uncompressing files, a window is displayed
showing the unarchival progress. After viewing a selected PKT
file, pressing [ESC] returns you to this list and allows you to
select another file for viewing. Pressing [ESC] a second time
returns you to the previous screen.
[F8] - Header Information
While viewing the actual messages within the mail archive,
pressing the [F8] key brings up a window containing all the
specific information about the current PKT file such as To/From
addresses, PKT Type, Password, PKT Creator, Product Code, Program
Type, Environment, Program Author, Network Address and so on.
The above information is often useful when determining the PKT's
origin address, or even a PKT level password because mail was
rejected by your system. After you're finished viewing this
information, pressing [ESC] will return you to the previous
screen and allow you to resume viewing the displayed message.

ViewPKT! v1.00 DISPLAYING MAIL ARCHIVES
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
DISPLAY OTHER DIRECTORIES
As mentioned earlier in the documentation, you may instruct
ViewPKT! to look in a specific directory for mail archives by
simply selecting the Main Menu option, Display Other
Archives/PKTs Path.
This option presents you with a field to enter the complete
<drive:\directory> information. After entering in a valid DOS
path, ViewPKT! will display the contents and allow you to resume
with the usual selections.
