UFDC v1.30 Sysop Documentation
Foreword
Thank you for taking the time to look at my product. If you find any
bugs, problems, or can not get it to work properly with your system, please
contact me and I will help you with your initial installation. I am trying
to make installing this as painless as possible, so just read along and
try to comprehend. I know I don't write the best Docs in the business, but
I try. Again, if needed, I can be reached at ShadowRift BBS (Number & other
info at end of document). Thanks again and Please Register!
OVERVIEW
The Ultimate File Download Counter will edit Descriptions in PCBoards
DIR files, adding the line 'Times Downloaded: XX' to the end of a files
description. XX is the number of times that particular file has been
downloaded from your system.
Haveing this line telling your users how many times a file has been
downloaded is very useful. It allows them to instantly know which files
are popular, and usually, the better quality of files. It also helps you
out in deciding which files are decent enough to stay on your system. (If
a file has been on your board for over 6 months and hasn't been downloaded
once, it's probably a safe bet that no one would get upset if you deleted
it to make way for new files.)
PROGRAM FEATURES
- Automatically senses new downloads since last time UFDC was run.
- Reads any size DOWNLOAD.TXT and DIR files.
- Counts up to 30000+ Downloads on one file. [REGISTERED VERSION]
- Able to be run during your nightly event. [REGISTERED VERSION]
- Helps users decide which programs are worth downloading.
- Handles up to 25 directory files in the Unregistered version.
(Registered versions handle up to 100, but this limit can be
easily raised - It was arbitrarily set at 100.)
REGISTERED AND UNREGISTERED VERSIONS
UFDC is NOT Freeware. Unregistered versions are 30 day evaluation
copies only. After that time they should either be removed from use or
registered. Registration is only $10 U.S. Dollars so please Register
your copy today! See 'REGISTER.DOC' for more information.
REGISTRATION BENEFITS
- UFDC will run in a batch file, allowing you to run it in your nightly
event. (The way it was really meant to be run! With No Sysop
intervention or THOUGHT!)
- UFDC only counts to 10 in the Unregistered Version. Register, and
that limit is removed.
- UFDC is limited to work on 25 DIR files in the unregistered version.
This limit is raised to 100 in the Registered version. (If you
need this raised further, it's very possible. Just let me know!)
- Free technical support Via ShadowRift BBS (3 Nodes - Jax., Fl)
- Lifetime free updates of all future versions
If this all sounds like a good deal, please fill out the registration
form and make your check or money order payable to:
Paul Taylor
P.O. Box 26190
Jacksonville, Fl. 32226-6190
If all goes well, within 3 weeks you should receive a disk in the mail.
You can, however, download your registered version from ShadowRift BBS. We
recommend that you call and let us know your registration is on its way so
that way we can post your registered version as soon as we receive the
registration. If you have a valid FIDO net address, please let us know and
we can send it to you directly if you have no objections. (Personal checks
will require about a week to clear the bank)
Disclaimer
UFDC is distributed as is. There are no warranties, expressed
or implied. By setting up and running UFDC, you are releasing
Paul Taylor and ShadowRift BBS from any liability for any damage that
may occur by the use or misuse of our programs.
INSTALLATION
Step 1 : Make the directory UFDC and it's associated files
will reside in.
Step 2 : Unzip the UFDC archive in that directory.
Step 3 : Enter your PCBSetup and Write Down the FULL paths
and Filenames of up to 25 of your more popular directory
files. (Such as C:\PCB\MAIN\UPLD)
Step 4 : Find and record the location of your DOWNLOAD.TXT file.
Step 5 : Edit your UFDC.CFG file - Make sure to add your
location of your DOWNLOAD.TXT file and all of your
DIR files you want updated and edited.
Step 6 : BackUp and DELETE your DOWNLOAD.TXT File. I can NOT
stress how important this step is! On a LARGE Download.txt
file, as I am sure you would have when first running this
program, it would take hours to process every file if you
have a large file area. When I first wrote this, as a
final test, I ran it on the Download.TXT file that I have
had since January .. About 7 months worth of downloads
took about 2 hours to go through. (Of course, it could
be partially because I have 75 separate directories that
are each quite large). But, in ANY case, I wouldn't
suggest it unless you want the Times Downloaded stamp
to be retroactive to the last time your DOWNLOAD.TXT file
was erased.
Step 7 : Thats It! Just Run UFDC.EXE every few days and it will
automatically update your DIR files with the
"Times Downloaded:" line.
Other Files Written By Paul Taylor
The Ultimate File Request Door - This door allows users to post
requests for files that they need in an organized way. It
allows other users to put up replies to these requests to
let the original requester know information such as if it
is already on the system or other such helpful comments.
The request is removed when another user uses the option
of fulfulling a request. It is distributed under the filename
UFRD100A.ZIP and is available for FREQing from (1:112/63)
under the magic name REQUEST.
SecureDOS - This door allows a cosysop to Drop to DOS the safe way.
It is configurable to allow users who enter the door to only
be able to access certain areas of the hard drive and they
can be limited to certain functions. There are many other
security features that are not listed here. SecureDOS is
set up to EMULATE a Drop to DOS. Most of the commands will
give the user the impression of actually being in DOS. It is
distributed under the filename SECDOS10.ZIP and is available
for FREQing from (1:112/63) under the magic name SECUREDOS.
Known bugs and anomolies
Currently, there are very few (known, that is. Heh).
If you find any problems with this software, it would be very much
appreciated if you could report these. You can report them directly to
the author on ShadowRift BBS (Number at end of docs). Just send private
mail to Paul Taylor.
