As a San Antonio resident for over 15 years, I think I can help you.

First of all, there really aren'tt any good BBQ places downtown, with the
exception of Tony Roma's.  It is located on the river floor of Rivercenter Mall.
Prices range from around $10 per person to $30.  You can get very full for
approximately $15.  I highly suggest the onion ring loaves.  But only get a
full loaf if you are eating with someone else, or even two someone elses.

Mexican food is much easier to come by.  There are Mexican and Italian
restaurants all along the Riverwalk.  Don't eat in the hotels along the
Riverwalk unless you have to....the Riverwalk is too neeat of an experience
to only eat in a hotel.  Prices along the riverwalk vary from $7.50 to $25.00
it all depends on where you want to eat.  All of the restaurants along the
Riverwalk post menus, so you can decides ahead of time which fit into your
budget.

On a purely tourist note for dining, make sure to go to the Tower of the
Americas.  Lunch at the tower should run around $8.00, plus drinks, tax, and
gratuity.  Dinner will be more expensive, running approx. $12.00.
If you decide to go up the tower just to see the look-out deck, DON'T.  There
is a better way to get to the look-out deck.  Go to the restaurant elevator,
and request to go to the lounge.  Sodas run $1.34 at the last time I was there.
You get free refills, and there is only a $1.00 service charge for the
elevator ride.  If you go just on the tourist elevator, the ride will run
$3.00 per person.  Remember, though, only the dining part of the tower rotates.

My favorite Downtown restaurants are Tony Roma's, the Bayou's (seafood), and
the Olive Garden (Italian).  Mi Ti Aira's (sp?) has good Mexican food, but the
wait is very long.  There is a small Mexican restaurant next door to it, that
is cheaper and the wait is much shorter, but I forget the name of it...

I hope all of this helps....just remember that dining out in Downtown San
Antonio is a romantic experience....and you have to pay for the romance

The downtown Italian restaurants aren't really worth the trouble.  Two
of the oldest Mexican restaurants on the river are Casa Rio and La Paloma
del Rio.  Both are touristy, but the food is decent and the setting can't
be beat.

The food here is nothing to get excited about.  If you just have to go up in
the tower, take the advice below.

The Bayous is a good seafood oriented place on the river.  It can get expensive,
though.  Another good restaurant on the river is the Zuni Grill, a new place
specializing in Southwestern food.  Prices are moderate.

Mi Tierra is an old San Antonio favorite that's not exactly downtown (it's in
the market area), but which can easily be reached from downtown by taking one
of the little "trolleys" that travel the downtown/hemisfair/market areas.

I've been to San Antonio many times and haved enjoyed it immensely.

The Riverwalk has some great restaurants.
If you like Mexican (which I adore) you will like the restaurant called
"The Original". There is also another mexican restaurant that I liked
with the word "Patio" in it. Not hard to find, I just can't remember the
name.

If you like Sunday brunch, Holiday Inn on the Riverwalk has a
restaurant over the river that serves a great buffet for an affordable
price.

 The Stetson restaurant in the Hyatt Hotel has fine dining and you need
reservations. The Little Rhine Restaurant is in a perfect spot to sit outside
and
watch the shows across the river at the Arneson Theatre (just don't eat there
when it is raining! They serve steaks and such but it is expensive.
We ate at the "Old Bayou" I think it's called. It's supposed to be the
best cajun restaurant around but the portions we got were a tad small.

Right off of the Riverwalk in the Hotel Menger, there is a bar where Teddy
Rosevelt recruited his "rough riders". There is also a nice restaurant there.

If you have time, I would visit the Mexican Market. It is a flea market, has
specialty stores which are very interesting, mexican shows which are
absolutely a must see!, and great Restaurants. There is one you can sit
outside that has* wonderful* mexican food. You can also watch mexicans
cook authentic mexican (american style) in booths in the streets.

Yes I am hooked on the Mexican food there, but that atmosphere is perfect
for that stuff. You otta take the cheap ride in the riverboats around sundown!

Sure hope I gave you some good ideas. These ideas, of course, are just
what appealed to me.

There aren't a lot of truly vegetarian restaurants in San Antonio.  There are
almost no vegan ones.  But there are many eateries where one can find a
vegetarian option or negotiate with the Chef.  Be warned that many Tex-Mex
restaurants use a lot of beef lard.
