- [ Upgrading from v1.xx or Earlier ] - - [4.0] -
Because of the _numerous_ changes made, Steel & Ice will require
a completely new installation.
The easiest way to do this is to delete your old version, and
setup v3.00 as outlined in Section 5.0 of this documentation.
- [ Upgrading from v2.10 or Earlier ] - - [4.1] -
The configuration file HOCKEY.CFG and SYSTEM.DAT have not changed.
Just replace all the old files with the ones included in the archive,
and run setup to RESET the league. Remember, you MUST reset the
league in order for Steel & Ice to work!
- [ Setup and Installation ] - - [5.0] -
Steel & Ice is setup like any other door. The items indicated
in the square brackets ('[',']') show a suggested setup. Your
system configuration will no doubt be different. This is just
the configuration that the author uses for his BBS.
1. Create a directory to store all Steel & Ice files.
[ C:\ONLINES\HOCKEY ]
2. UnZip S&I_300.ZIP into the new directory. Steel & Ice is
packaged with an AV check provided by PkWare Inc. While
unzipping the archive, if you find that your copy does
not have the symbol "-AV" beside each file, the archive
has been modified, and is not the origional archive as released
by Minds Edge Productions Inc.
3. Change to the directory, and run the program SETUP.EXE
4. Select the option "Setup S&I" and input all the information
that it asks for. "Reset S&I" is not necessary, as the
game will create all the necessary data files when it is
first run.
5. SETUP.EXE will create a batch file called S&I.BAT. This
batch file can be used on _most_ BBS systems to call up
Steel & Ice. You may wish to edit this batch file if you
are running off a multinode system with different DORINFOx.DEF
files.
6. Set up your BBS software to call S&I.BAT with a drop file
of either DORINFOx.DEF or DOOR.SYS. Steel & Ice will read
either one according to the information supplied previously.
Steel & Ice should be completely functional now. SETUP.EXE creates
a file called HOCKEY.CFG. This is an plain ASCII text file that
contains some information about your system. This is needed for S&I
to function properly. The format of the text file is provided below :
1st Line : Sysop's Full Name
2nd Line : BBS Name
3rd Line : Locked baud rate [0 if no locked baud]
4th Line : BBS Type : 1 - Dorinfo1.Def
: 2 - Door.Sys
5th Line : Number of days in the season [30 Recommended]
6th Line : Time in seconds per period [90 Recommended]
This can be edited with any text editor. When comparing registration
codes, Steel & Ice retrieves the sysop name and BBS name from this
file. Take care when filling out your registration forms to provide
the same sysop and BBS name as edited in HOCKEY.CFG.
- [ Maintenance ] - - [6.0] -
With v3.00 of Steel & Ice, maintenance has been moved to an external
event. The file is called MAINT.EXE and it must be run once every
day in order to calculate statistics. It is recommended to run
this at 12:00 midnight every night.
- [ Multinode / Novell LAN ] - - [7.0] -
Steel & Ice can be used on multinode or Novell LAN BBS systems that
generate a DORINFOx.DEF file where x is the node number. On the
command line, specify the location of the drop file, and which node
number the game is running on. For example, to load up DORINFO3.DEF
from the directory C:\BBS, specify :
HOCKEY C:\BBS 3
You may wish to edit the S&I.BAT batch file to accomodate these
parameters. For systems such as Remote Access, that generate ONLY
DORINFO1.DEF regardless of which node has spawned the game, just
provide 1 as your node number to all nodes.
- [ Door Information ] - - [8.0] -
Steel & Ice accepts the following command lines :
1. Running under DORINFOx.DEF setup -
HOCKEY <Path to DORINFOx.DEF> <Node Number>
2. Running under DOOR.SYS setup -
HOCKEY <Path to DOOR.SYS>
While in the door, the following keys are available to the sysop :
Alt-C : Invoke full-screen chat mode. Press ESC to exit.
Alt-H : Hang up the phone.
Alt-X : Exit game immediately (use with caution).
Alt-J : Jump to DOS.
Up : Increases user's time by two minutes.
Down : Decreases user's time by two minutes.
F1..F4 : Various different status bars
- [ Bugs & Suggestions ] - - [9.0] -
Steel & Ice has been under beta testing for the past month.
However, no amount of beta testing can retrieve all the bugs
present in a program. If you encounter a bug or run-time error,
please write down where it occured and the address of the error
if available. The author can be contacted on :

- [ Resetting ] - - [10.0] -
Steel & Ice is automatically reset at the end of every season.
The season length can be set by using the SETUP.EXE program (see
section 5.0 Setup). If you want to reset Steel & Ice manually,
select the option "Reset S&I" in the setup program. This will
delete TEAMS.DAT and *.NWS. Do not delete SYSTEM.DAT, as this
contains your registration information.
- [ Future Versions ] - - [11.0] -
Steel & Ice is constantly undergoing development. The following
ideas are presently being 'tossed around' :
1. The Stanely Cup at the end of the league.
2. Possible Inter-BBS playoff formats.
- [ Registration ] - - [12.0] -
You may use Steel & Ice v3.00 for as long as you want without
registering. However, if you want to help support the further
development of this game, a small registration price of $15.00
would be appreciated. With the registered version, Steel & Ice
will allow the user to play up to 19 games after his/
her initial first game of the day (unregistered version currently
limits players to one game / day). As well, your copy will be
personalized with the sysop's and BBS's name.
To register, fill out and print REGISTER.DOC and mail it with a
cheque for $15.00 Canadian (British Columbia residents add 7%
sales tax; $15.00 American if you are residing outside of Canada).
The address and further information is located in REGISTER.DOC.
