Software Review
=====================================================================
Program now uses Door Patch 3.8 and supports the following BBS
drop file formats: DOOR.SYS, PCBOARD.SYS, SFDOORS.DAT, CALLINFO.BBS,
DORINFO1.DEF, DORINFO2.DEF and CHAIN.TXT. Compatible with at least
these BBS systems: PCBoard 14+, GAP 4+, RBBS-PC 17+. WILDCAT 2+ and
Spitfire 3+. Also supports baud rates up to 115,200 BPS.
This program was originally called Review Ware. If you are
changing over to this program and have Review Ware on your system, or
have a Software Review version less than 3.00 you cannot run this
version unless you follow setup instructions. You must also run the
SW-FIX.EXE program to convert existing data to the 4.00+ data format.
This step is vital if you have existing data.
SETUP for pre-v4.00 data
It is possible to run an older version if you set up your own
TYPE.DAT using the first '8' entries in the original alignment, and
adding your own from that point on. Old alignment is: Utility,
Communication, Graphic, Music, Game, Programming, Business, Other.
The TYPE.DAT is a straight ASCII file, each entry on it's own line.
If you do not use this sequence the existing reviews will have the
wrong type when displayed within the program. Make sure you run SW-
FIX.EXE one time only.
My programs may be on various BBSes around the country under
different archive extensions and types. This is the state of all the
BBSes around the country. I personally like LHARC better, slower but
smaller and suggest you give it a try.
The archive file should contain the following files:
SW.EXE SW.CFG SW-SORT.EXE SW.DOC READ.ME SYSOP.DOC
TYPE.DAT SW-FIX.EXE
SW.EXE is the main program. SW.CFG is a sample configuration
file. SW-SORT.EXE is the external sort routine. SW.DOC is this file.
SYSOP.DOC is documentation for Sysop supplied from the Door Patch 3.5
archive, and READ.ME contains some bug fixes. TYPE.DAT is a sample
(ASCII) 'type' file. All files must be included in and archive that
is downloadable from your system. SW-FIX.EXE is a program to convert
earlier data to that of 4.00+. These files may not be altered in any
way.
My archive files no longer contain DORPCH38.EXE and the
BRUN30.EXE file. This was done to make the file smaller so that it
takes up less space on the host BBS. If you need either the
DORPCH38.EXE file or the patched BRUN30.EXE library contained in the
Door Patch file, they can be obtained from various BBS systems around
the country. The filename for Door Patch is DORPCH38.ZIP.
Starting with version 6.0 the sysop can now control whether
reviews are deleted or not by the daily maintenance routine built
into the door. Please see .CFG format.
This door comes with an example SW.CFG. It is supplied to show
you how to set up the configuration file. The file may be modified to
suit. Please try and limit the limit of your Sysops names to
PCBoard's name length of twenty-seven characters (total length). The
sixth line is for registration serial numbers. If you change the
"Unregistered BBS" name or serial number it will still come up in the
door as "Unregistered BBS" until you get a registration serial
number.
C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS < change to suit your system
Unregistered BBS < changes only take affect with registration
Boss < change to sysop's first name
Dude < change to sysop's last name
Your Sysop < Door Donor's name
0000 < changes only take affect with registration
Y < Delete expired reviews (N=Don't delete)
C:\PCB\DOORS\BLT14 < optional bulletin, requires registration
You also can populate the .CFG file with path and filename for a
bulletin. If not populated, no bulletin is generated. The bulletin
shows the latest ten reviews that have been entered into Software
Review. It shows title and date it was entered. As each new review is
entered the tenth one is deleted, the new one becomes number one and
other others are stepped down one position. This shows the newest
review as the first position in the bulletin.
The bulletin, if used, can be called anything you want and saved
to any directory on your drive(s). Leave out line five if you do not
want a bulletin generated. It is suggested that you generate the
bulletin because it does save users from having to go into the door
to see if new reviews have been entered since the last time they used
Software Review. *** NOTE *** The bulletin is disabled in non-
registered versions.
TYPE.DAT
The new alignment is in alphabetical sequence and contains '12'
default types. The sample TYPE.DAT contains the same default types
hard coded into the program. When the program runs it first looks for
the presence of TYPE.DAT, if it is not found, it then uses the
defaults within the program. You can have up to '18' entries up to
'16' characters in length. More or longer entries are truncated (to
maximums). This option was added to give the program more flexibility
as I did in my Book Review.
Default entries: Business, Communication, Desktop Publishing,
Education, Food & Health, Game, Graphic, Miscellaneous, Music,
Programming, Utility, Word Processing
The Sysop has the authority/power/option to delete any record
that is believed not in good taste. Users can only delete a record if
they have input the original record. Deleted records are replaced
with the next entry starting at record one and looking for the first
deleted (blank) record. If no deletions are found the program adds
the new record to the end of the database.
There is now an external sort program called SW-SORT.EXE. You
must call the sort program. I am letting the sysops handle when this
routine is called. If you put it in the batch file when the door is
used the user may not have made and entry, hence no changes that need
to be sorted. The best way to use this would be in a nightly event if
you have such an operation on your system. You can also do the sort
from a batch file the first thing every morning. If there are few
entries each week you might do this on a weekly basis. I still do not
feel a user should wait while the program sorts entries. The sort
routine is compiled using QuickBASIC 3.0 so you must have BRUN30.EXE
somewhere in your path (3.0 is faster than 4.0 and up). If there are
errors they will be logged in a file called SW-SORT.ERR.
The program, including Door Patch uses nine buffers, one through
nine. Your system must have this many or more (forty buffers and
thirty files is normal for most machines).
Registration provides you with a serial number that will let you
enter your BBS name in the second line of the SW.CFG file. This
number replaces the "0000" in the fifth line of the .CFG file. Please
support Shareware!
If you have comments on the program, please feel free to contact
me. Also, if program errors develope, please contact me at once so
that corrections can be made.
Usable ideas for door programs (games or anything else) will
provide the donor BBS with a free, registered, copy of that
particular program. This is my way of saying "Thank you" for you
program ideas, which by the way, are not easy to come by.
At this time the programs are written to work on any computer
with an eighty column screen. These are my current doors: Music
Review for entering reviews on music recorded on any medium: Software
Review that is used to do reviews on Public Domain, Freeware and
Shareware programs; Movie View where reviews are done on all kinds of
movies; BBS Review where users enter reviews on various BBS systems;
Book Review where users can enter reviews on any kind of books;
Community Service (Public Service Announcements) that is used to list
local and nearby activities; Restaurant Review for doing reviews on
your favorite eateries; Wine Review for doing reviews on your
favorite wines, goes hand in hand with Restaurant Review; Rime List
door for viewing the worldwide RelayNet nodes, BBS Door Review for
viewing BBS doors (mainly for users to use).
I have a game called Gotcha! where the user tries to see how
many doors can be picked before you are caught. As of this writing
this is an enhanced version.
You can get all my door software directly from me by sending me
diskette(s), any PC format, to cover one meg of files, and include a
mailer with return postage. You may include postage and label for a
reusable mailer.

Please supply name of BBS to be added to program; it may include other data
up to thirty characters. This is to be on one line of code and must be legible
since the serial number is based on exact syntax. I cannot be responsible for
unreadable data. Please print. Case sensitive!
Example: "Jim's Graphics BBS". In program it comes out:
