Subj: Russian genealogy books
Here are titles of books on Russian genealogy which I have
collected so far from another Roots Forum member and a Slavicist
at Indiana University. [Abbreviations: I.U.=Indiana University
(library); LC=Library of Congress; FHC=Family History Center;
SLC=Salt Lake City--the latter two are abbreviations for those
with access to the Family History Centers maintained by the LDS
Church]:
(1) Russkie Familii: populiarnyi etimologicheskii slovar, by
Iurii Fedosiuk (Indiana Univ. Library reference system
requires the spelling Iurii, rather than Yuri.), 1981.
I.U. call number: CS 2815 .F39 1981. My translation of
the title: Russian families: popular etymological
dictionary. (This book is in SLC Library but currently not
available for loan to FHC's due to copyright restrictions.
Available through Inter-Library Loan from I.U.)
(2) Title: (translated) Alphabetical index of names of
prominent Russians for the Russian Biographical
Dictionary. Its FHC call number: Europe/Book
Area/947/D3i. The description from the Family History
Library Catalog says it is a reprint of a book published
in Moscow in 1887-1888--the reprint is from 1963. It is
available on microfilm from SLC. From Slavicist: This
book was published by the Russkoe istoricheskoe
obshchestvo, and called: Azbuchnyi ukazatel' imen
russkikh deiatelei dlia Russkago biograficheskago
slovaria. They were published as volumes 60 and 62 of
the Sbornik Imperatorskago Russkago istoricheskago o-vo.
(The funny spellings are for the old orthography, and
maintained by the Library of Congress). It contains short
entries for some 52,000 names.
(3) Lobanov-Rostovskii. Aleksei Borisovich Russkaia rodoslovnaia
kniga. (2nd edition). S. Peterburg, 1895. 2 vols. I.U.
call number CS 847 .R95.
(4) Mehr, Kahlile. Sources for genealogical research in the
Soviet Union. Buffalo Grove, IL, 1983. 39 p. Good, short
introduction covers topics of Church registers, Civil
registration, Census, Estate serf lists, Revision lists,
Military service, Austrian military service, title deeds,
Con Confessional lists, Lineage books and Notary books.
I.U. call number: CS 843 .M45
(5) Dolgorukov, Petr Vladimirovich. Rossiiskaia rodoslovnaia
kniga. S.-Peterburg, 1854-1857. 4 vols. [not at I.U., Library
of Congress nr. CS 847 .D62]
(6) Dolgorukov, Petr Vladimirovich. Rossiiskii rodoslovnii
sbornik. Sanktpeterburg, 1840. 4 vos. Vol. 4 has the
complete index (62 family names). This is really an
earlier, less complete ed. of the above.
(7) Gmeline, Patrick de. Dictionnaire de la noblewsse Russe.
Paris, (no date) 901 p. [not at I.U., LC nr. CS 847 .G55]
A 153 page introduction explains how to do Russian
genealogical research.
(8) Rummel, Vitol'd Vladislavovich. Rodoslovnyi sbornik russkikh
dvorianskikh familii. S-Peterburg, 1886-1887. 2 vols. [not
at I.U., LC nr. CS 847 .R8] Compiled to supersede the
Dolgorukov and Lobanov works.
(9) Semevskii, Mikhail Ivanovich. Russkaia rodoslovnaia kniga.
Sanktpeterburg, 1873-1876. 2 vols. [not at I.U., LC nr.
CS 847 .S4]
The I.U. Slavicist doubts very much that the 19th century volumes
can be borrowed through Inter-Library Loan.
