  8.      Louisa May Alcott's novel brings to life vividly the life
  9. of New England during the nineteenth century.   A  life  that
  10. was tranquil, secure, and productive.
  11.  
  12.      It is little wonder,  for she drew on her own and on her
  13. family's experiences for her work.   As one of four daughters
  14. growing up in Boston.
  15.  
  16.      At the age of eight, she moved with her family to nearby
  17. Concord.  There she spent the happiest  years of  her younger
  18. life, even though she experienced the constant threat of pov-
  19. erty.

  21.      She counted as friends the children of Hawthorne and Em-
  22. erson.  The Alcott was only a modest cottage,  but  the girls
  23. made use of a neighboring barn to  perform  plays written  by
  24. Louisa May.

  26.      She was educated at home, and became a school teacher in
  27. Boston. She saw her first story printed in a Boston newspaper
  28. at the age of twenty.  Her  first  full-length book  appeared
  29. two years later.

  31.      Interrupting her career as a writer,she served as a nurse
  32. in a Washington hospital during the Civil War.
  33.  
  34.      The thing that pleased her most about her writing, as  she
  35. became more and more well known, was the fact that sales of her
  36. books helped to make life more comfortable and less of a  daily
  37. struggle for her parents in their later years.

  39.      LITTLE WOMEN was published in 1869, and has gone on to be-
  40. come one of America's classics.
