Grammar Online!
User's Guide to the DOS Shareware Version
Copyright (c) 1993 by David Harrill Roberts
September 5, 1993
Grammar Online! provides instant access to grammar and mechanics
rules while you are working at a computer. It works inside most
word processors, providing rapid reference to the information
writers need most. Grammar Online! is a reference tool to help
you make decisions about grammar and mechanics issues; it is not
a grammar or style checker.
Grammar Online!'s main menu groups information according to the
table most common errors found in the writing of college
freshmen. The original program was designed as a supplement to
the McGraw-Hill line of college handbooks (The McGraw-Hill
Handbook, the Borzoi College Handbook, and the Random House
Handbook. All are available for purchase from the McGraw-Hill
College Division.) This shareware version can be used
effectively without the printed handbooks.
System Requirements
Grammar Online! requires an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS2, or compatible
computer with DOS 2.1 or higher and, with most word processors, a
minimum of 512K memory (640K with PFS Write and Professional
Write). Graphics are not required, and the program can be copied
to and run from a hard disk.
The program will run inside most DOS word processors. Microsoft Word
should be running in text (non-graphics) mode before Grammar
Online! is displayed. You can switch Microsoft Word into text
mode while it's running by holding down the <ALT> key and typing
the <F9> key.
Copying the Program to a Hard Disk
To copy Grammar Online! to a hard disk, start the computer as
usual and get to the DOS prompt, usually C>. Next, place your
copy of Grammar Online! in Drive A, then type COPY A:GRAMMAR.EXE
C:\ followed by <ENTER>.
Loading the Program
Always load the Grammar Online! before starting your word processor.
Floppy disk users: Place your backup copy of the program in a
disk drive and make it your default (active) drive. At the DOS
prompt, type GRAMMAR and press <ENTER>.
Hard disk users: Type the complete path for the location of
Grammar Online! (for example, if you copied it to the root
directory, type C:\GRAMMAR and press <ENTER>. If you copied the
program to a directory named "stuff", then type C:\STUFF\GRAMMAR
and press <ENTER>.
NOTE: Experienced users may want to modify their AUTOEXEC.BAT
file to automatically load Grammar Online! every time they start
the computer. Batch files can also be created to automatically
load Grammar Online! before starting a word processor.
The message "GRAMMAR ONLINE! load complete" will be displayed
once the program is successfully loaded. You should then remove
your Grammar Online! disk and put it away. The program has been
loaded in your computer's memory and is ready for use. You can
now load and start your word processor.
Starting the Program
To start the program once your word processor is running, hold
down both the left and right shift keys simultaneously. Follow
the instructions on the screen to access the different features
of the program. The <ESCAPE> key will remove Grammar Online!
from your computer's screen (but not from its memory).
Trouble Shooting
If your word processor will not work because your computer has
insufficient memory after loading Grammar Online!, other memory
resident programs may already be loaded. Remove these to free up
additional memory and then restart your computer. Also check
your CONFIG.SYS file to be certain it contains the following
lines:
files = 20
buffers = 10
