PURPOSE OF FAKEOUT
FAKEOUT was written as a simple but effective password protection program for an office or home PC. When I was looking for a password program, none of the existing programs I found met my needs exactly. What I ended up writing was a combination of the various programs I have tried. I tried to take the best of each of them and combine them into FAKEOUT.
The basic idea behind FAKEOUT is that if a user does not know it is running, they won't try to get around it. This idea will not work if a person REALLY wants to get into your system, but no software protection will offer complete security.
When FAKEOUT is started, it presents a phony C:\> prompt, where you enter your password. If you enter your password correctly, it will tell you when the last entry occurred, and whether or not it was successful. It also keeps a log of all attempted accesses in a file that can be viewed anytime. The password and log files are encrypted so they cannot be altered or viewed with a text editor.
FEATURES OF FAKEOUT
- Doesn't look like a password program.
- Gives realistic looking DOS error messages.
- Password and log file are encrypted to prevent tampering.
- Provides a record of computer use.
- Automatic installation and configuration.
- Simple to use and set up.
- Comes with a utility program to view the log file.
LISTING OF FILES
The following is a list and description of files that are
used by FAKEOUT:
FAKEOUT.EXE Main program file
FUTIL.EXE Utility program to view or delete log file and tocreate or change passwords
INSTALL.EXE Program to install FAKEOUT
INSTALLING FAKEOUT
To install FAKEOUT, you need to make sure all the above listed files are on a floppy disk. Place that disk in your floppy disk drive (either drive A: or drive B:), and type:
A:INSTALL
or
B:INSTALL
depending on which drive you put the disk in. The installation is very straight forward. Follow the prompts in the install program and FAKEOUT will be installed.
If you do not wish to use the installation program, here are thesteps involved in installing FAKEOUT:
- Make a directory for FAKEOUT on your boot disk
- Copy all FAKEOUT program files to that directory
- Add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
C:\(directory name)\FAKEOUT
- Add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:
BREAK = OFF
- Execute the FUTIL program to create a password file.
- Reboot your machine to have the changes take effect.
That's it!! FAKEOUT is now installed on your machine.
USING FAKEOUT
When FAKEOUT is executed on bootup, it will present you with a C:\> prompt. This is not a real DOS prompt, however. You must enter your password to continue. Anything you type in will not be shown to the screen. If you do not enter the correct password, it will come back and say "Bad command or file name". If you just press [ENTER], it will give you another prompt. You have three tries to enter the correct password. If you do not enter the correct password, it will come back with a message saying
General failure reading drive C
Abort, Retry, Fail
If you press anything but "A", for abort, it will pause and give you the message again. If you press "A" for abort, it will lock the computer up with a message saying MEMORY ALLOCATION ERROR. The only way to get out is to reboot the machine. Hopefully if a would-be intruder saw that, he (or she) would forget about using your machine and just turn it off and leave.
If you enter the correct password, it will come up with a window showing the date and time of the last attempted access, and whether or not it was successful. If it was successful, it will come up with a green window, if it was not, it will come up with a red window. Press a key after that, and that's all there is to it!
USING THE FUTIL PROGRAM
If you want to change your password, view the log file, or clear out the log file, change to the directory where the FAKEOUT program files are and type in FUTIL. The program will then ask you for your password (if one has been defined). You have three tries to enter the old password. If you enter it correctly, it will then come up with a menu of four options:
F1 Display log file
F2 Clear out log file
F3 Change password
F4 Exit
The options are pretty self-explanatory. You can move the highlight by either using the arrow keys, the spacebar, or the mouse (if you have one). You can choose an option by either moving the highlight to the desired option and pressing [RETURN], or by pressing the appropriate function key.
- F1 will display the log file if one exists
- F2 will erase the log file if one exists
- F3 will allow you to create or change your password
- F4 or [ESC] will exit the program
Just follow the prompts on screen and you should have no problems. The password you enter must be at least 4 characters and can be up to 10 characters long, and can be anything you wish it to be. It can either be upper or lower case, but the program does not distinguish between the two. After entering the password, it will ask you to confirm your password. If the two do not match, it will start over and ask you for a new password. It will continue until you enter the same password twice in a row.
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS
I have tried to make this program as easy to use as possible, and I have tried to test it thoroughly on a variety of different machines. If you have problems, here are some things to try:
If you can't log on (it doesn't accept your password):
- Boot from a DOS diskette in the A: drive.
- Delete the WORD.DAT file in the root directory and
run the FUTIL program to create a new file and try again.
If you get an error message:
- Delete the WORD.DAT file in the root directory and
run the FUTIL program to create a new file and try again.
If the programs don't run:
- Try reinstalling the programs using the instructions on
page 5.
I can't think of any other problems you might encounter. If there are problems that you still can't resolve, You may write to me at:
