CyberNet Network - Rules and Guidelines
There are very few, cut in stone, rules. The others are just
guidelines to keep the network running smoothly. They are
flexible and can be modified (by the moderator of a conference
or an administrator).
INTRODUCTION:
The CyberNet Network was made to allow people from all over
to "talk" and interact with each other. It is a private network
belonging to the Network Administrators and the SysOps who carry
it.
The guidelines which follow were written solely as a means of
providing a basic foundation for the net, and to keep information
flowing. If you have any questions, please feel free to call
any member of the net. They will be glad to help you out and
answer any questions that you may have.
Thank you for considering to carry this network and welcome!
APPLICATIONS:
All you have to do to join the network is to:
Agree with the guidelines
Fill out a Node Request (or Hub if one is needed in your area)
After that we'll find you a hub and let you start echoing.
MAIL RELAY SOFTWARE:
The mail relay software used in CyberNet is both QWK and FTN (FrontDoor,
D'Bridge, Binkley, etc.). Others such as PCRelay and PostLink are not
currently supported. But will be looked into in the future if a need
should arise.
SYSOP RESPONSIBILITIES:
These guidelines should be made available on your BBS and users
should know what they are. This should help out the new users
and keep the net going smoothly. A list of all conferences
should also be on your BBS to let the users know what the
conferences not carried by your BBS are.
Sysops are responsible for the users of their BBS. Please encourage
your users to follow the guidelines
Hubs are responsible for the actions of the Nodes (BBSes)
echoing from them.
All members are asked to keep a current CyberNet Information Package
available for download from their BBS.
All member BBSes should carry the Net Chat, and CyberNet Admin
conferences.
Taglines for BBSes should be along the following guidelines.
QWK: CyberNet * <BBS name> * <City & State> * <BBS phone number>
FTN: CyberNet * <BBS name> * <BBS phone number> * <Node Number>
The Node Number for FTN is usually appended by the mail tossing
software.
It is understood that some net/relay software may make this
impossible, we only ask that you do your best.
Please insure that the Host Tagline inserted by your system
matches the tagline used by your Hub. This can be very
important in tracking down any problems in the relay process.
HUB RESPONSIBILITIES:
It is suggested that all Hubs arrange a schedule for its mail runs,
using such software as will insure that the BBS is available to the
Nodes at the times agreed upon.
A HUB should not make Nodes pay for obtaining thier mail.
If a Hub runs a "Subscription BBS", the Hub must provide a FREE
account within its BBS for each node that relays mail.
Any Hub that plans to stop echoing CyberNet should assist their Nodes
in finding another Hub, and provide a fair advance warning. (as possible)
ADMINISTRATION:
Duties of the Administration are as follows
Coordinate the activities of the Net to facilitate the flow of
mail
Act as arbiter between member sysops who are unable to resolve
their differences.
Review an complaints brought against a member BBS or Sysop
Maintain an up to date Conference/Moderators Listing and Hub/
Node Listings
CONFERENCES:
CyberNet only has one "semi" private conference which is for
moderators. All others are open to all. But, if the need arises
a private conference may be set up. Private conferences are only
open to selected groups.
No conference on this network may be crosslinked to another network
without permission from the Administrators. And no Hub/Node will
allow someone who did not go through the application process to echo
conferences.
MODERATORS:
Moderators are an important part of any network. Without a strong
Moderator, a conference can quickly become a quagmire, or die.
The duties of the Conference moderators are as follows:
Enforce all network Guidelines
Keep Messages on topic
Do not allow users to "Flame" others
Help the users to the best of your ability
Keep the conference going--do not let it DIE
Control message quoting--do not allow over-quoting to
get out of control.
Have fun and help others have fun.
As a moderator you may add guidelines to your specific conference.
For example if your the Technical Moderator, you may allow vendors
to do ads maybe once a month. The ads wouldn't be allowed outside
of the conference. So only those interested and have the conference
have to see them.
Any Moderator having problems with a user, is requested to notify
the Administration for further action.
THE RULES
We request that users of CyberNet use their true names. Aliases are
not allowed in the public areas of the net. There may arise, at some
time, a conference which is controversial or a conference where people
might not want to give their real names (ie. Gay Rights, Rape Victims)
and those conferences may be designated as a aliased conference. If
aliases are used in any conference they must be acceptable to other
users on the net. No profane words or suggestions should be a part
of the alias.
No "Flaming" is allowed. Personal attacks will not be tolerated in
any CyberNet conference. Any user found to be slandering others, being
abusive, discriminating against a person because of their Race,
Religion, Color, Sexual Preference, Culture, or Sex, or it they
are found to be just plain arrogant, can and may be locked out of
CyberNet.
No Illegal Activities. Any use of CyberNet to promote Illegal activities
will be grounds for removal from the network.
No Swearing in any CyberNet conference. Please remember, Teens, and
Children may be able to read messages on some BBSes.
Users of CyberNet should be advised that no attempt is made to provide
private communications capabilities. All messages placed on the
Net must be considered public and are open to all having Net
Sysop status.
Use your own judgment, If you would not like it done to you, don't do it
to others.
AMENDMENTS:
From time to time, it may be necessary to make amendments to the
existing guidelines.
Any such change will be put up for a vote by all participating sysops.
Notice and voting will be in the CyberNet Admin Conference for a period
of Ten days. Notification will include statement of purpose of the
proposed Guidelines change.
All votes will be Yes/No unless stated otherwise.
It is not our wish to have so many different rules and regulations to
scare anyone away. So we have made what we think to be pretty good
quidelines with few rules.
