| |
| CM problems in the area of Lan Protocol and |
| Adapter support or Lan Transport ( LAPS ) |
| |
| |
|LAST UPDATE: 02/03/93 BY: GMB |
| |
|Purpose: This information APAR provides information on |
| CM problems in the area of Lan Protocol and |
| Adapter Support or Lan Transport |
| |
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
|
| Overview.
|
| 1. Frequent problems
| 2. Duplicate address test at initialization
| 3. References

|
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| 1. Frequent problems
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
|
|12/08/92
|Problem: - Communications Manager will not load
| Token-Ring driver
| - Message: ACS0111 (CM message: Main CM Menu)
| LT00050 (Lan Transport: in LANTRAN.LOG)
| - Error: Type 0017 00000002 ALERT 3EF789B7
| - Duplicate address appears to be returned by the
| network, although there is not a duplicate address.
| this is caused by a device (S/W or H/W)
| probably echoing back the address.
| - A duplicate address is present on the ring.
|
|Solution: Resolve the duplicate address.
|
|Suggestions:
| 1. Change the T/R address to insure it is unique.
| 2. Find the duplicate address:
| -ask the IBM Account Team to use OS2PING from the
| IBM tools disks or
| -use a LAN manager program to query the adapter
| address or
| -use a sniffer trace
| 3. Try adding "NETFLAGS = 0x0100" after the link
| statement in the PROTOCOL.INI file. The NETFLAGS
| parameter is a circumvention until the S/W or H/W
| that is incorrectly echoing or incorrectly
| sending a duplicate address can be identified
| and corrected. After the S/W or H/W (bridge,
| router, etc.) is found and corrected, then
| the parameter should be removed to allow Lan
| Transport to continue checking for the error of
| a duplicate address.
|
|01/29/93
|Problem: - Communications Manager gets TRAP 000D Indicating
| the PROTMAN$ driver as originator
| - Message: TRAP 000D ORIGINATOR: PROTMAN$
|
| - If the TOKEN entry found under the MAC SECTION
| DEFINITION of the PROTOCOL.INI file is BLANK or
| contains a NULL a TRAP 000D will occur.
| (EVEN IF THE TOKEN ENTRY IS NOT BEING USED)
|SOLUTION:
| 1. Add a value on the line below the TOKEN entry
| found under the MAC SECTION DEFINITION.
| EG.
|
|----------------- MAC SECTION -------------------------------*
|-------------------------------------------------------------*
|
| TOKEN
| TOKEN$
|
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
| 2. Duplicate address test at initialization
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
|12/17/92
|
| There are 3 XID frames sent out at initialization time
| requesting a response by any adapter having the same
| address as the local adapter. If another adapter has this
| address as well, it will respond by sending its own XID frame.
|
| This test for LANDD.OS2 (CM ES 1.0 LAPS) will cross
| all bridges in the network, unlike LANDD.SYS (CM EE 1.3)
| which tests only locally.
|
| There is a wait period of 1.5 seconds for the
| responses to arrive. After this time, if more than
| the original 3 XID frames for this address have been
| received, then the assumption is made that a
| duplicate address has been detected. In some cases,
| a bridge in diagnostic mode, or one not functioning
| properly will echo these XID frames back to the
| network causing extra frames to arrive at the
| initializing adapter, and a false indication of a duplicate
| address will occur.
|
| NETBIOS does not have a similar test, which can cause
| failures later if a duplicate address exists on the network.
