Most of the stuff within walking distance of the Conference Center is
strictly for turista. The only outstanding exception is Domenico's on
the Wharf. Probably a little pricier than it has a right to be but
the view is nice. Continental seafood.
There's also a Thai place called Siamese Bay up by the Post Office (I
can never remember the address, the streets in that area were laid out
by a three year old playing pick-up-sticks) that is pretty good. If
you like it Thai hot, they'll give it to you!
My favorite place to eat in the Monterey Bay area is in Carmel: La
Boheme at 7th and Dolores (they don't have street addressed in Carmel
proper, only sort of vague locations). It a table d'hote affair,
meaning that there's only one thing on the menu each night (plus a
vegetarian dish if you feel so inclined) and, IMHO, it is always
EXCELLENT. I've been there more times than my waistline can stand and
have always left happy and well fed. No reservations taken or needed,
as they say.
Carmel is great for walking around in -- during the early evening --
after most of the tourists have left...

packing for a road trip.)

There's only one really good restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf:
Demonico's. Continental style. Pricey. I've dropped $150 for two
(we did go pretty much full bore, though).
However, you *must* go to La Boheme in Carmel. Table d'hote style,
meaning you walk in and they feed you. You get to choose the wine.
:-) (Actually, they also have a vegetarian meal, some sort of pasta
thing, usually.) Medium priced -- expect to drop about $75 for two
with a nice bottle of wine and dessert. La Boheme is more or less at
7th and Dolores (as I've mentioned no doubt too often, there are no
street addresses in Carmel-By-The-Sea. It adds to the quaint charm of
the place). Stay out of Carmel during the day, though. Crawling with
turista.
Fandango in Pacific Grove is also quite good -- about the same range
as La Boheme.
