I just got a cookbook from "Janos", near the Tuscon art museum. I
haven't been there but the recipes seem outstanding. I am certainly
going to try to get out there next summer. I don't know the prices,
but they are probably not cheap.
Anyone know this place?

Janos is considered one of the finer restaurants here in
Tucson. It's located in an historic downtown adobe,
and the chef is one of the prime movers of Southwestern
Nouvelle cuisine. My understanding is that it is elegant
(and pricey!), but I haven't been there personally.
For a different experience I would recommend Mi Nidito
("my little nest"), a small but excellent Mexican restaurant
serving the local Sonoran style food. It's inexpensive
($5-$10 per entree), and I've never been disappointed. It's
also very crowded all of the time so expect a wait.
Enjoy your visit!

Good restaurants in Tucson...
Mexican:
El Dorado on S. 4th Ave. Great Sonoran style at a great price.
Rosa's on Ft. Lowell, Campbell - I like their hot sauce and cheese crisps.
German:
Ilsa's: Best desserts in town. Located on Swan (or is it Craycroft?)
south of River Road. Small entree seklection, but wonderful food.
Seafood:
Spinnaker: Located on Glenn? Look it up.
Korean:
There's a place on Speedway, down a few blocks from the Wherehouse
on country club. Good stuff.
Quickie Mexican:
Sanchez Burrito Company on 1st & Grant (roughly) Tucson tradition.
Pizza:
Z's on 6th st and park. Best pizza in town.
Beer:
Cushing street and Harp(??) both have Guiness.
The Shanty has lots of bottled beer.
Best darn appetizer:
Go to El Presidio, on speedway. They serve a baked garlic appetizer
to kill for.
There are lots more. Tucson (and Phoenix) are blessed with a plethora
of fine food establishments. Another reccomendation is to try Eric's
Ice Cream on Speedway in front of the University. Just don't get a beer
float. 8-)

Well known 'good' restaurants include: The Tack Room (4 star continental)
Janos (innovative southwestern cuisine with stunning atmosphere)
some other place at Campbell & Skyline (I don't remember its name but
it has a great view; the cuisine was continental)
Other places to try (less expensive): Penelope's (french), Scordato's (italian)
Sweetwater Cafe (southwestern/continental)
Fun places to eat (least expensive): Cafe Magritte (good for nighttime
downtown type activity), Coffee Etc., Blue Willow

You can start with "Gentle Strength" Co-op in Tempe near Arizona State
University - 234 West University Ave. (University & Mill). The co-op
runs a deli where they serve vegan, vegetarian and macrobiotic dishes.
If you are there on a Wednesday, you can pick up a free copy of the
New Times newspaper. Near the back of the paper you will find listings
of restaurants and descriptions. There are several Thai restuarants that
are good about modifying the dish for vegan/vegetarian. Also many of the
Mexican restaurants are now cooking with vegetable oil instead of lard.
In this case, all you need to do is ask to eliminate the cheese in the dish.
Also, there are several Greek, Middle Eastern and Indian restaurants that
serve interesting vegan/vegetarian foods.

Try the In Season Deli at 414 N. Mill in Tempe (4 blocks north of Mill).
The previous poster mentioned Mexican, Thai, etc. There are several decent
generic Mexican places--Garcia's and Macayo's come to mind immediately. For
really good cheap Mexican, try Rosita's (Tempe & Mesa), Tee Pee (Phoenix), or
Los Dos Molinos (Phoenix & Mesa). One of the best Thai restaurants in the
valley is a tiny little place--the Siamese Cat at Baseline & Price in Tempe.
Happy eating!

Thanks to everyone who recommended Janos in Tucson. We had what was probably
the best meal we ever ate there!
What we liked best was the uniqueness of the dishes. There was not one
item on the menu that was like anything we had ever had before. Even the
pate' was made of goat cheese with peppers instead of liver. The cooking
is a delightful combination of Southwestern (with a slightly spicy
orientation), Asian and French.
I started out with a dish of sauteed shitake mushrooms and scallops,
served in a brown sauce flavored with sherry and topped with sauteed
pieces of scallion. Then, after the house salad -- appropriately bland
but with a generous amount of freshly grated parmesan cheese -- I had
a breast of chicken which was baked prior to having a fine stuffing
inserted between the meat and the skin. Then it was grilled so the
stuffing and skin got crispy -- unbelievable.
The dessert selection, again, was very different. Our daughter (the
beginning college student and the reason for the trip) was the only one
who succumbed. She ordered a fresh fruit plate that was magnificently
presented and included huge blackberries, slices of pineapple, kiwi,
etc.
Too bad that after a day and a half of 106-degree heat my husband said that
he won't return to Tucson till Kate graduates. Four years is too long to
wait between meals there! Oh, with a $20 bottle of wine, the bill came
to about $50 a person -- well worth it!
Almost forgot to mention the ambience -- it's in a historic mansion in
downtown Tucson -- we ate in a high-ceilinged room whose adobe walls
were painted the color of brick. The entrance was flanked by two vases
that must have been 8 feet tall. The lighting was low and the plates were
pottery of different styles. No "matchies." All in all, a very restful
and soothing environmennt.
Again, thanks for the tip.
