South American burrowing rodent, genus
Ctenomys, about 20 cm/8 in long with a 7 cm/3
in tail. It has a large head, sensitive ears,
and enormous incisor teeth. It spends most of
its time below ground in a burrow system, one
animal to a burrow. The name tucu-tuco is an
attempt to imitate the bubbling call.
