  1. A trumpet is a member of an ancient family of 
  2. lip-reed instruments existing worldwide in a 
  3. variety of forms and materials, and forming 
  4. part of the brass section in a modern 
  5. orchestra. Its distinguishing features are a 
  6. generally cylindrical bore and straight or 
  7. coiled shape, producing a penetrating tone of 
  8. stable pitch for signalling and ceremonial 
  9. use. Valve trumpets were introduced around 
  10. 1820, giving access to the full range of 
  11. chromatic pitches.
