Cell found in the water-conducting tissue
(xylem) of many plants, including gymnosperms
(conifers) and pteridophytes (ferns). It is
long and thin with pointed ends. The cell
walls are thickened by lignin except for
numerous small rounded areas, or pits,
through which water and dissolved minerals
pass from one cell to another. Once mature,
the cell itself dies and only its walls
remain.
