  1. A tide is the rise and fall of sea level due 
  2. to the gravitational forces of the Moon and 
  3. Sun. High tide occurs at an average interval 
  4. of 12 hours, 24 minutes, and 30 secs. The 
  5. highest or spring tides are at or near new 
  6. and full Moon, the lowest or neap tides when 
  7. the Moon is in its first or third quarter. 
  8. Some seas, such as the Mediterranean, have 
  9. very small tides.
