Metallic element, symbol Tl, atomic number
81, relative atomic mass 204.39. It is a
soft, bluish-grey metal which tarnishes in
air and is malleable but of low tenacity. It
is a poor conductor of electricity and its
compounds are poisonous, being used as rat
poison and insecticide. Other compounds are
used in optical and infrared glass making and
in photoelectric cells. It was discovered
spectroscopically and isolated by Crookes
1861 and by Lamy 1862.
