  1. Mammal of the ancient family Tapiridae, which
  2. grows to a maximum of 1 m/3 ft at the
  3. shoulder, and weighs 350 kg/770 lb. They have
  4. thick, hairy, black skin, short tails and
  5. short trunks. They are vegetarian, harmless,
  6. shy inhabitants of the forests of Central and
  7. South America, and Malaysia. Their survival
  8. is in danger because of destruction of the
  9. forests. Tapirs are related to the
  10. rhinoceros, and slightly more distantly to
  11. the horse. The Malaysian tapir Tapirus
  12. indicus is black with a large white patch on
  13. the back and hindquarters. The South American
  14. species is brown.
