  3. tapestry design is threaded into the warp
  4. with various shades of yarn. Tapestries have
  5. been woven for centuries in many countries,
  6. and during the Middle Ages the art was
  7. practised in monasteries. European tapestries
  8. of the 13th century frequently featured
  9. oriental designs brought back by the
  10. Crusaders. The great European centres of
  11. tapestry weaving were in Belgium, France, and
  12. England. The Gobelins tapestry factory of
  13. Paris was made a royal establishment in the
  14. 17th century. In England, William Morris
  15. established the Merton Abbey looms in the
  16. late 19th century. Other designers have
  17. included Raphael, Rubens, and Burne-Jones.
  18. The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidery rather
  19. than a true tapestry. Many fine tapestries
  20. are still made in France; for example, the
  21. tapestry designed by Graham Sutherland for
  22. Coventry cathedral, which was made at
  23. Felletin, where tapestries have been woven
  24. since the 15th century.
