Two islands in Antarctica: Ross Island in
Weddell Sea, discovered 1903 by the Swedish
explorer Nordenskjold, area about 3,885 sq
km/1,500 sq mi; Ross Island in Ross Sea,
discovered 1841 by the British explorer James
Ross, area about 6,475 sq km/2,500 sq mi,
with the research stations Roos (New Zealand)
and McMurdo (USA). Mount Erebus (3,794
m/12,520 ft) is the world's southernmost
active volcano; its lake of molten lava may
provide a window on the magma beneath the
Earth's crust that fuels volcanoes.
