  1. Period in British history from the mid-1st
  2. century BC to the mid-4th century ad. Roman
  3. relations with Britain began with Caesar's
  4. invasions of 55 and 54 BC, but the actual
  5. conquest was not begun until AD 43. England
  6. was rapidly Romanized, but north of York
  7. fewer remains of Roman civilization have been
  8. found. After several unsuccessful attempts to
  9. conquer Scotland the northern frontier was
  10. fixed at Hadrian's Wall. During the 4th
  11. century Britain was raided by the Saxons,
  12. Picts, and Scots. The Roman armies were
  13. withdrawn 407 but there were partial
  14. re-occupations 417-c. 427 and c. 450. Roman
  15. towns include London, York, Chester, St
  16. Albans, Colchester, Lincoln, Gloucester, and
  17. Bath. The most permanent remains of the
  18. occupation were the system of military roads
  19. radiating from London.
