Region of E France in the upper reaches of
the Rhone; area 43,700 sq km/16,868 sq mi;
population (1986) 5,154,000. It consists of
the departements of Ain, Ardeche, Drome,
Isere, Loire, Rhone, Savoie, and
Haute-Savoie. The chief town is Lyon. There
are several notable wine-producing areas,
including Chenas, Fleurie, and Beaujolais.
Industrial products include chemicals,
textiles, and motor vehicles.
