  1. Horizontal underground plant stem. It is a
  2. perennating organ in some species, where it
  3. is generally thick and fleshy, while in other
  4. species it is mainly a means of vegetative
  5. reproduction, and is therefore long and
  6. slender, with buds all along it that send up
  7. new plants. The potato is a rhizome that has
  8. two distinct parts, the tuber being the
  9. swollen end of a long, cordlike rhizome. See
