  3. coil with a sliding contact. It is used to
  4. vary the electrical resistance without
  5. interrupting the current (for example, when
  6. dimming lights). The circular type in
  7. electronics (which can be used, for example,
  8. as the volume control of an amplifier) is
  9. also known as a potentiometer.
