  4. establishment of Protestant Churches.
  5. Anticipated from the 12th century by the
  6. Waldenses, Lollards, and Hussites, it became
  7. effective in the 16th century when the
  8. absolute monarchies gave it support by
  9. challenging the political power of the papacy
  10. and confiscating church wealth. 1517 The
  11. German priest Luther's protest against the
  12. sale of indulgences began the Reformation in
  13. Europe. 1519 Zwingli led the Reformation in
  14. Switzerland. 1529 The term `Protestant' was
  15. first used. 1533 Henry VIII renounced papal
  16. supremacy and proclaimed himself head of the
  17. Church of England. 1541 The French theologian
  18. Calvin established Presbyterianism in Geneva,
  19. Switzerland. 1559 The Protestant John Knox
  20. returned from exile to found the Church of
  21. Scotland. 1545-1563 The Counter-Reformation
  22. was initiated by the Roman Catholic Church at
  23. the Council of Trent. It aimed at reforming
  24. abuses and regaining the lost ground by using
  25. moral persuasion and extending the Spanish
  26. Inquisition to other countries. By 1648, at
  27. the end of the Thirty Years' War, the present
  28. European alignment had been reached, with the
  29. separation of Catholic and Protestant
  30. churches.
