Controversial method of diagnosing anal abuse
in children, which was at the centre of
speculation in Cleveland, NE England, in 1987
(see child abuse). Repeated anal abuse
stretches and damages the anal sphincter,
with the result that when the anus is gently
stretched apart during the test, it continues
to dilate as a reflex action. The normal anal
sphincter remains tightly closed.
