  2. There are two applications on the "PD_from_EFF" CDRom:
  3.  
  4.         !EFFcat - an Electronic Catalogue of the high quality
  5.         =======   fonts from the Electronic Font Foundry.
  6.                 a) it shows samples of most of the EFF fonts,
  7.                 b) it is also a Price List
  8.                 c) it has a search facility to search all the EFF names
  9.                         as well as their PostScript⌐ equivalents
  10.                 d) the fonts are grouped into categories, Latin,
  11.                         Cyrillic, Greek, etc.
  12.  
  13.         !PDcat - an Electronic Catalogue of the free Public Domain
  14.         ======   fonts from the Electronic Font Foundry:
  15.                 a) it shows samples of the PD fonts,
  16.                 b) it installs PD fonts on your system.
  17.                 c) it has a search facility to search all font names.
  18.  
  19. These applications may be run directly from the CDRom or copied into
  20. your hard disc first.
  21.  
  22. Font instalation
  23. ================

  25. The PD fonts are in the directory "Fonts". 
  26.     ========                       =====
  27. In order to install the PD fonts you may simply drag the font files
  28. into your Font Directory or even use the fonts directly from the
  29. CDRom, but you may find it preferable to install them using !PDcat
  30. application since only this method will give full control AND give the
  31. proper font names - CDRom files are only in capital letters*, whereas
  32. proper font names are in upper and lower case.

  34. *) CD file names can only be in capital letters, and Acorn font
  35. names are deduced from file and directory names.
  36.  
  37. Quality
  38. =======
  39.  
  40. All the PD fonts on this disc are significantly better hinted than
  41. fonts from any other vendor, regardless how much you have paid for
  42. them. No letter will have drop-outs at any bitmap size but, at the
  43. same time, the letters will not appear as black as in the so called 
  44. "No DropOut Technology" which uses a very crude method of automatic
  45. introduction of skeletons and scaffolds.

  47. Of course, they are not hinted to the same standard as our own fonts
  48. shown in the !EFFcat - the latter are hand hinted by a skilful 
  49. typographer! 
  50.  
  51. Font Formats
  52. ============

  54. All the PD fonts on this disc are Risc OS 3 format.
  55.  
  56. The EFF fonts for Acorn computers can be obtained in three formats:
  57.  
  58.         1) Risc OS 2 - for Archimedes computers using the older Risc OS 2
  59.  
  60.         2) Risc OS 3 - for almost all Acorn computers using Risc OS 3.x
  61.  
  62.         3) Publisher - special fonts for users of PostScript printers and/or
  63.             imagesetters. Each font is actually two fonts:
  64.             standard Risc OS 3 font and
  65.             an identical PostScript Type 1 font used by the Acorn PostScript
  66.             Printer Driver. 
  67.             These fonts give superior results on PostScript printers.
  68.  
  69.             P.S. The Publisher fonts are not related to !Publisher application
  70.                  from Computer Concepts Ltd.

  72. The EFF also produces TrueType« and PostScript Type 1 fonts for Windows and 
  73. Macintosh computers as well as several in other less used formats.

  75. Keyboard Drivers
  76. ================
  77.  
  78. The Electronic Font Foundry produces fonts for a very large number of
  79. languages, if you wish to use them you will need a Keyboard Driver.
  80. The fonts are usually a number of languages, for instance, Cyrillic
  81. fonts are for Bulgarian, Byelorussian, English, Macedonian, Moldavian,
  82. Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian. But a Keyboard Driver is for a
  83. specific language, for instance, Russian.

  85. Furthermore, a Keyboard Driver is for a specific keyboard - Risc PC
  86. uses IBM keyboard whilst older Acorn computers use their own unique
  87. type. To put it simply, some of the letters and symbols are physically
  88. in different places on Risc PC and Archimedes computers, therefore
  89. they require different Keyboard Drivers.
