and your family!
Ira J. Lund
This book is about my ancestors. I have divided it into TWO main sections, one section for my father and his ancestry and one section for my mother and her ancestry. An Appendix is provided for various listings and information. At the end are a
listing of place names and an index of every individual in the book, showing every page that they appear on. (For the benefit of CFT users, I have inserted a Sample Report Chapter with samples of all reports capable of being produced by Cumberland Family
Tree but not used elsewhere in the book.)

Let me explain a few things for those not familiar with names and dates. In Chinese (as well as other oriental countries) surnames are always written FIRST, before the given names. Thus, in my wife's name - Chang Chooi Fong - Chang is her surna
me. Over the past century, in many places in Southeast Asia it has been the custom among some orientals take "choose" an Western or English given name. Each individual chooses their own usually while they are in grade school. Thus my wife eventually chose
"Alicia", which is the name most of my family and our friends know her by.
In interviewing Alicia's family, we often

The two Introductory chapters, the two preceding "main" chapters and the following Appendix and Lists, only contain 10 different types of CFT reports! (If I were producing this book for my family, I would only use these 10 reports. Of course, I
would also print out more generations and incude more details on the lives of the individuals involved.) Since there are 30 different reports available, that means there are actually 20 more reports that can be produced by Cumberland Family Tree for Windo
ws that were not needed to produce the desired Family History Book.
However, because this sample book is intended to be used as a sample for CFT users, this chapter is included which shows samples of the other 20 reports. As you will quickly n

Birth of Ane Marie Lund: Plejestiftelsen of the King Frederiks Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark 8799 Pt 6.
It is very exciting to hold in your hands your very own Family History book written by YOU! This can now be a reality with help from Cumberland Family Tree for Windows. With this powerful program you can create an heirloom which will be cherish
ed by your family for generations to come! To help you to better take advantage of the powerful Indexed Book feature of Cumberland Family Tree, I have written this book - my own family story - as an example.
Out of 30 (currently available) rep
orts in CFT, I have used only 10 different types to produce this book. (I have included samples of the other 20 reports in the Sample Report Chapter.) To really make a nice book you do not need to use all of the various reports available. Many reports will
be better used for checking during the research process and to give you flexibility in designing your family history book. The reports I chose here are the ones I thought would go well in my book.
Please don't get hung up on the fact that a l
ot of the information in this book contain references to LDS ordinances, such as baptisms, endowments and sealings. There is complete flexibility built into the program. If you wish to enter baptisms, confirmations, ordinations or religions for your church
, it is there. If you are Jewish, Bar Mitzvah and Bas Mitzvah are also provided as events. If there is any religious, civic, or other event that you wish to record that is NOT in the current list of events, all you have to do is create your own event! You
have complete control!
I sincerely hope that you will be able to use this program to create your very own Family History book that you can be proud of, that will be cherished by your family for generations to come. Good Luck and God bless you

Some people don't write because they don't think they are good writers. Some people think that they are not good spellers or don't know and understand grammar. Maybe all of the above are true for you, but I say that it doesn't matter. Write som
ething anyway. How much would you give to have a single page written by your great-grandfather? What a treasure it would be, yet he probably thought the same thing as you. He probably thought that he was not well-educated and could not write. But you woul
dn't care if he misspelled words or misused grammar, would you? You would be happy to hear from him.
"These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. From each of them goes out its own voice... and just as the t
ouch of a button on our set will fill the room with music, so by taking down one of these volumes and opening it, one can call into range the voice of a man far distant in time and space, and hear him speaking to us, mind to mind, heart to heart." -Gilbert
Highet
Wouldn't it have been wonderful if your ancestor had talked to you from a distant time and place? Wouldn't it be wonderful if you spoke to your yet unborn descendants, as if from the grave, by recording your life, your experiences and
your thoughts? You can do just that by writing your life story and all that you remember of your own parents and grandparents.
As I said earlier, this book was written specifically for CFT users, as an example on how to write your own family history book. Before you begin to write go ahead and work on the mechanics of entering data. Use the User's Manual to learn how t
o use the program. My suggestion is to write most of the stories as notes under specific events, rather than as General Notes. Also read the section in the User's Manual on creating an Indexed Book so that you understand the mechanics of it.
T
hen when it comes time to start outlining your book, use this book as your vision and "dream" about how YOUR book will look. There is power in the imagination! "Dream" about your book and it's outline. I find that I often have ideas as I lie in bed at nigh
t. I saw much of this book in my mind's eye before I even put a word on paper (or in the computer). As I lay in bed, I read through the Table of Contents. It's real easy to change them too. In your mind, it is instantaneous. Then I even flipped through the
pages and looked at various pages and how it would look. Then I got excited and came down to my computer to start outlining the book and write this introduction.
You are free to copy any and all of my ideas. Primarily, I sincerely hope that
you will be able to create a story book of your family that you can be proud of. If you publish such a book and wish to send me a copy I would be interested in seeing your creativity. Perhaps you have ideas I may pass on to other users. I get a great deal
of satisfaction in knowing that through using my program you have preserved your family's history, because I believe that there is nothing more important than an individual's family. Preserving family stories for future generations really helps span the ge
neration gap and knowing one's family heritage give a uniquely broad perspective on one's own life.
My equipment consists of a 486 33Mhz computer with a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4. The LaserJet 4 prints at 600 dpi (dots per inch). Laser printers that print with less resolution than that will not give you as good an output as this printer. Whe
n it comes to printing your family history book, you will want as high a resolution printer as you can get. This will be especially important when it comes to the photographs.
Photographs (and scanned documents) will present you with the bigge
st headaches. The quality of the final printed photo will depend upon so many factors: the quality of the original picture, the scanning resolution and the printer's resolution. I have found that a photo which will look good when printed out may not necess
arily look too nice on screen. This may be due to the lower resolution of the screen. So your monitor's quality will also affect how good the photo looks on screen. Some of the photos in this book are actually xerox copies of photographs from years ago. So
me of the originals are not all that good. With good originals, a good scanner, a high quality image file (which will really eat up disk space) and a high resolution laser printer, you should be able to produce printed pictures as good as or better than th
e best photos shown in this book.
The process of creating your family history book begins, of course, with entering data into the database. If you keep in mind that the body of your book will likely be one of the Story reports (Ancestral Sto
kes a lot of time and effort. It is a process of creativity, trial and error, resourcefulness and diligence. Don't try to do too much at once. And don't give up too soon. Constant persistence will get the job done. A truly good Family History can take many
years to research and write - even decades! Don't get discouraged and don't give up! Few things will give you greater pleasure than one day holding a book that you wrote yourself!
Every page inside this book was created in CFT-Win. I have not used an outside word processor at all. All pages have been printed on an HP Laserjet 4 with 600 dpi resolution.
A local artist, Charlotte Carlin did the cover artwork.
She is very good to work with and reasonable. If you are going to make many copies, it does not cost that much more to have the artwork done for the cover. Charlotte does her work on a computer and can include scanned photos or other material. If you put t
ogether all the photos and ideas that you might like to see on your book, sketch it up and send it to Charlotte, she'll give you a quote on producing a film for the printers. If you make a lot of changes, or want her to do more of the design, or want her t
o do some thumbnails to choose from, then it will cost you extra. Her address, in case you're interested: Charlotte Carlin, Carlin Design, 257 Cherokee Trail, Clarksville, TN 37043. Phone: (615) 648-2095.
The cheapest printers I have found are
The Master Printer in Nashville, Tennessee. They're even cheaper (and better quality) than some of the mail order printers I have tried. You might find some local printers that will do a good job for you. You might also want to contact Master Printers for
a quote (which will have to include shipping if you are not close enough to Nashville to pick the material up yourself). Their address: The Master Printer, 2521-B Nolensville Road, Nashville, TN 37211. Phone: (615) 255-8421.
Now if you do n
ot plan on printing many books you might simply have a handful printed up at your local printers. They'll probably use a copy machine. And perhaps they will have a GBC machine which will bind your book with a plastic comb - which I like a lot. I do not lik
e three-ring loose leaf notebooks. The pages tear out too easy. There are some binders that you might find from an office supply store that have metal strips that allow you to expand the binder to the exact size of the book. These are better since they hol
oticed CFT provides a very wide variety of reports and options, almost more than one could wish for! It will take a lot of creativity and thinking (and work) for you to create your own Family History book and be able to use most of these reports.

This section is about my father, Leonard Baker Lund, and his ancestors. Here you will find a detailed pedigree, photos of his ancestors and a short story about him and his ancestors going back for three generations. There is also a Time Line wi
th him and his ancestors, as well as a descendants chart for his grandfather, Mogen Hans Lund.
This appendix consists of a listing of the places in the database and which individuals and events are associated with those places. (For the purpose of this book I have selectively printed only a few records from my database.)
ry or Descendant Story), then watch the sentences that get built when you add each event. Also remember to attach story notes to each event at the appropriate location in the person's life. You can go to the Ancestral or Descendant Report Dialog and "Previ
ew" a Story report for one generation only to see how the story of any individual will come out. This will help you as you go about writing their biography.
Once you have the data entered into the database, the next step is to begin outlining
your book in the "Indexed Book" dialog from the Reports menu. You can use this book as an example of how you might do this. The text you are currently reading, as well as the entire introduction, instructions to CFT-Users and each chapter beginning is a "D
ocument". Since you can create documents of any type and they do not need to be tied as a source note to anyone, this is where you can also keep miscellaneous notes. In the case of this first chapter, you can see that each topic within it is printed in bol
d. Each topic within this chapter is a different "document". I made sure I numbered them. The purpose of the numbering is to get them to sort alphabetically when printing. Thus, I "mark" only those documents for the chapter titled "To CFT-Win Users" and ha
ve them sorted "by name" rather than "by record number". This prints this first group of 6 documents within this chapter. The same is done for the two documents in Chapter 2. Introduction. The same is done for the various documents that begin each new chap
ter.
I believe that if you read the User's Manual directions on using the Indexed Book feature that you will be able to create the remaining chapters and topics with no problem.
Now, a few last tips:
1. Make certain you read the section
s on Standard Conventions in Chapter 1 of "Section 2: Climbing Your Family Tree" in the User's Manual. If you enter names and dates properly to start with, you'll save yourself a lot of grief in the long run.
2. If you always press the "Tab" key to inde
nt each new paragraph and do not leave spaces between paragraphs then your story format will come out looking good. For the most part that is the rule I have followed, although you will see that these last couple of paragraphs diverge from these rules. Jus
t make certain that you meant to do it. Also if you make certain that there are no blank lines after the last line in each document or note, then there won't crop up extra blank lines when you print your story.
3. Be patient! Writing a book like this ta
d the pages tight and the pages do not rip out so easy.
The stories contained in this book are not complete. I have deliberately abbreviated much of it (to avoid higher printing costs and save you from boredom.) I have also limited the number of known ancestors on my mother's side (from Norway). How
ever, everything in this book is true. Although it is easier to write about my family (since I know them better than others) my main purpose in using them as an example of a CFT Indexed Book is to help further my own family research. If you discover that y
our ancestors are from Rogaland and Vest Agder, Norway, there's a good chance we may be related. If you know anything about my other ancestors from Denmark, England and Wales, or about my wife's ancestors from Malaysia and China, I would be interested in h
earing from you.

Our lives always seem to be affected by so many people and there have been many that have helped contribute to mine and to the writing of this book. Foremost, I must acknowledge my wife and six children for their patience with me while I have s
pent so much time with my "hobby" (although I secretly think that they will enjoy the results of this hobby, also).
I should also thank my sisters, Linda and Kay. Linda has always had an interest in helping compile family stories and has help
ed me with several projects mostly with the typing of stories. She also edited the book on the "Life Story of Charley and Margaret Lund" (1987) - our grandparents, from which some of this material is drawn. My other sister, Kay has always been an avid rese
archer, working mostly on the Lund family from Denmark. I have also used and sourced much of her material.
I am also grateful to my father, Leonard B. Lund and his sister, Ila Baker, for their interest in family history which helped continue m
y interest when I was young, helping me complete "The Life Story of Mogen Hans Lund" (1974), the year after I got out of High School. I am also thankful to my mother, Frida Rage Lund and her sister, Gudrun Rage Dagsland (both now deceased) for the work the
y have done on my mother's Norwegian genealogy. Gudrun spent many years researching that line back in the 1950's. My cousins
ystein (from Norway) and Kristian Aase (Idaho) and their mother, Audney Aase (Norway), have also continued research on that line a
nd some of the information contained herein comes from them.
Last, but not least, I am grateful to Clara Larsen and Marian Condie, from the "Egypt" community east of Preston, Idaho, who taught church "Book of Remembrance" classes during the su
mmers of my teenage years. That introduction to family history when I was young helped fuel my lifelong interest in genealogy and family histories.
This section is about my mother, Frida Rage Lund, and her ancestors. Here you will find a detailed pedigree, photos of her ancestors and a short story about her and her ancestors going back for three generations. There is also a Time Line with
her and her ancestors, as well as a descendants chart for her father, Johan Severin Svendsen Rage.
Appendix A contains a wide variety of statistical data from my Computer Database.
This appendix contains an alphabetical listing of individuals in my computer database. (For the purposes of this book, I have selectively printed only a few of my direct ancestors.)
This appendix contains a listing of the marriages in my computer database. (For the purposes of this book, I have selectively printed only a few records from my database.)
